The 40th anniversary of Pope High School echoed back to the time of the school’s founding in the mid-1980s but trotted out a contemporary level of energy.

At Matt Hobby Field last weekend, “Popefest” featured more than six hours of live music, food, an artisan market, family activities and fireworks.

The bands featured local talent from around the Cobb area, and one was made up of teachers, according to the Cobb County School District.

In a district release, Pope social media coordinator Hayden Fraker said that “I have worked here for 10 years, and this is the first thing we’ve ever done like this to this large of a scale. We have different theme nights and invite people back for different sporting events, but nothing to this extent of having just the huge stage and just really incorporating every aspect of the community and what we’re doing.”

The event also benefitted one of the Cobb County School District’s key partners, the American Heart Association. A portion of the proceeds from Popefest were donated to the AHA, which last month was the recipient of a $1 million donation from the Kids Heart Challenge, an initiative of the Cobb school district.

At the end of the night, Popefest attendees were treated to a fireworks show from Pyrotechnics, which recently staged fireworks in Washington for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
