The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has released its lists of semifinalists for the 2026-27 school year, and 48 of them attend high schools in East Cobb.
They’re among the 16,000 semifinalists vying for a variety of academic scholarships provided through the NMSC, which said in a release Tuesday it will award nearly $24 million to high school seniors.
Of the 48 East Cobb students, 41 attend either Walton or Wheeler high schools, and the others are enrolled at Lassiter and Pope.
The NMSC release said that most of the semifinalists will move on to the finalist stage in the spring. To reach that stage, the student
“and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.”
