East Cobb Weekend Events: Party in the Patch, Sunday Funday and more

Now it’s really starting to feel like fall, with very cool temperatures coming in this week and a couple more weeks before Halloween. East Cobb weekend events are ideal for those and other activities of the season.

On Friday, high school football continues with key region games giving East Cobb teams a shot to jockey into playoff position.

At Wheeler, it’s homecoming, as the Wildcats take on East Coweta. Lassiter is also at home to face Roswell, Kell entertains Carrollton and Sprayberry will meet Dalton.

Walton stays on the road to play Etowah. All those games kick off at 7:30 p.m. At 8 p.m., Pope plays at North Atlanta.

The final weekend of CenterStage North’s season finale, “Point of Order, continues at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at The Art Place (3330 Sandy Plains Road). Tickets are $20 each.

More board-trotting, this on the high school stage, as Pope Theater completes its presentation of “Edward Foote,” a Southern Gothic mystery set in the Depression-era Appalachians, on Friday and Saturday, both at 7 p.m., as well as a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee. The shows take place in the school’s performing arts theater (3001 Hembree Road), and tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, as the Pope troupe prepares for next weekend’s Georgia High School Association One Act Regional Competition.

Weekends are ideal for getting the stress out, and on Saturday, you can learn how to handle it at a special Breathing and Meditation Session from 11-12:30 at the Mountain View Regional Library (3320 Sandy Plains Road). Khyati Doshi of The Art of Living Foundation will discuss how you can find your “space” with the simple act of breathing. The session is free but you should dress comfortably to practice some new breathing techniques.

If the rain holds off on Saturday, it should be a great day to explore one of East Cobb’s underrated nature preserves. From 12:30-2:30 p.m., the Cobb Master Gardeners Open Garden features a “walk and talk” at the Wright Environmental Education Center (2663 Johnson Ferry Road), led by Jerry Hightower, Park Ranger at Chattahoochee National Recreation Area. The event is free and parking is available at the adjacent Chestnut Ridge Chistian Church.

If you love high school marching bands, Sprayberry High School is the place to be Saturday for the 36th annual Southern Invitational Music Festival. Bands from around Cobb, metro Atlanta and Georgia will be performing in a judged competition, and the Sprayberry Band of Gold will be giving an exhibition performance at 7:45 p.m. Tickets are $10 adults, $5 students with an ID, and free for kids 6 and under. Everything takes place at Jim Frazier Stadium (2525 Sandy Plains Road).

Halloween events are starting to kick into gear, and one of East Cobb’s longstanding pumpkin fests is the Party in the Patch at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church (1770 Johnson Ferry Road). It’s free family fun starting at 5 p.m., so bring the kids in their costumes and enjoy a pumpkin maze, face painting, jumpy houses, family fun and more. A movie screening begins at 7:30 p.m., and they’ll have pumpkins on sale until 7:30 p.m.

UPDATE: Party in the Patch has been delayed due to rainy weather to Sunday, starting at 4:30 p.m., with a double-feature film starting at 7:15 p.m.

Sunday should be gorgeous, sunny and in the mid 70s, and it’s the last Sunday Funday of the year from 4-6 at East Cobb Park (3322 Roswell Road), presented by WellStar. The McCleskey-East Cobb Family YMCA will have Yoga and Zumba classes, Soccer Clinics, and kids activities. Bring a picnic and enjoy the Loose Shoes Band.

East Cobb Weekend Events: Holiday Décor Market; Eastminster Church Festival; Halloween Hikes and more

Today’s the first day of fall, and it’s starting to feel a little bit like it. Many East Cobb organizations have already begun autumn- and holiday-themed events, and they’re continuing this weekend.

The highlights from our calendar listings for Friday-Sunday:

The Good Mews Holiday Decor Market gets under way Friday and continues every weekend through early December, returning to the Sandy Plains Exchange Shopping Center (1860 Sandy Plains Road, Suite 202). They’re open this Friday and the last Friday of the sale, on Dec. 7, from 12-5; otherwise the hours are Saturdays 10-5 and Sundays 12-5. The kitties like the one above who are the beneficiaries of the sale won’t be onsite, but you can get an early start on gently used goods for holiday shopping. Good Mews also is accepting your donations starting Friday and through Nov. 25;

Church fall festivals are starting to gear up too, and coming up is the Eastminster Presbyterian Church Fall Festival from 12-8 Friday and from 10-4 Saturday at the church (3125 Sewell Mill Road). Games, crafts, kids activities and BBQ are on tap, and the proceeds benefit several local charities, including MUST Ministries;

If you want to get out and stretch your legs while soaking up the beautiful weather and tap into the holidays, Halloween Hikes at the Chattahoochee Nature Center (9135 Willeo Road, Roswell) is an ideal event for the whole family. They’re guided half-mile walks along lighted trails and with crafts and other Halloween decorations. The times Friday and Saturday are from 7-9:45 p.m., and the cost is $12 a person;

The high school football season is drawing to a close, with several East Cobb teams still vying for playoff position. Friday’s games kick off at 7:30 p.m, and they include Cass at Kell, Woodstock at Lassiter, Sequoyah at Sprayberry, Roswell at Walton, Campbell at Wheeler and Pope at Cambridge.

By the way, that Walton-Roswell game is going to be shown live from Raider Valley on Georgia Public Television, as the No. 2 Raiders look to stay unbeaten on the season and in region play.

If high school band music is your thing, you’ve got all day Saturday to take in the 35th Southern Invitational Music Festival, which goes from 10-10 at Sprayberry High School (2525 Sandy Plains Road). Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for students with an ID and free for kids 6 and under.

EAST COBB WEEKEND EVENTS: Haunted Hustle Run; band festival; Walton-Lassiter football; Pope Theater; ‘Roman Reads’ and more

The Sprayberry Band of Gold once again is host of the Southern Invitational Music Festival, from 10-10 on Saturday at Jim Frazier Stadium. 

It’s finally starting to really feel like fall, and with Halloween coming in just a little more than a week, so are the pumpkin-related East Cobb weekend events:

  • Kicking off one of many such Halloween activities on Saturday is the Haunted Hustle Race, a 1k/5k event at the Northeast Cobb YMCA (3010 Johnson Ferry Road). The shorter race starts at 7:30 a.m. with the feature event following at 8;
  • Don’t forget the ongoing Pumpkin Patches at several East Cobb churches that continue all the way to Halloween. They’re open daily and generally have extended hours on the weekends;
  • The high school football regular season is reaching its climax, and with crisp fall weather in the air the timing couldn’t be better for an East Cobb backyard rivalry game on Friday. It’s Lassiter at undefeated and state-ranked Walton, at 7:30 p.m. at Raider Valley (1590 Bill Murdock Road), with region and playoff implications on the line;
  • In other games on Friday, Kell is playing host to Carrollton, and Sprayberry is also at home against River Ridge. Wheeler and Pope travel to Campbell and Chattahoochee, respectively;
  • Sprayberry’s Jim Frazier Stadium (2525 Sandy Plains Road) will be an extra busy place this weekend, continuing on Saturday with the 34th annual Southern Invitational Music Festival. The hosts Sprayberry Band of Gold are putting on the judged competition that lasts from 10-10, with prep marching bands coming from around the Southeast;
  • Saturday also will be a quick turnaround for the Lassiter band, which is putting on the Lassiter Band Community Recycling Day from 9-4 at the school (2601 Shallowford Road);
  • While the weather’s supposed to be in the 70s and at least partly sunny this weekend, there are some indoor events worth noting here, including the Roman Reads Family Storytime session from 2:30-3:30 at Mountain View Regional Library (3320 Sandy Plains Road). It’s aimed at grade school to middle school kids and is presented by the Wheeler High School Junior Classical League;
  • If you like your drama staged and indoors, there’s the Pope Theater version of “12 Angry Jurors” continues Friday and Saturday at 7, plus a Saturday matinee at 3 at the school (3001 Hembree Road).
