East Cobb Business News: Ribbon-cuttings, luncheons and more

East Cobb Business Update, Explore Chiropractic Ribbon Cutting

The East Cobb Business Association is helping new businesses introduce themselves to the community by sponsoring ribbon-cutting events.

Saturday was the grand opening for Explore Chiropractic (above), which has opened its doors at Parkaire Landing Shopping Center (4880 Lower Roswell Road, Suite 20, next to Earthwise Pet Suppy).

The owner is Dr. Dan Ruitenbeck (holding scissors), a graduate of Life University. In addition to general chiropractic care, services also cater to pregnancy and pediatric needs. Explore Chiropractic serves the East Cobb, Roswell and Sandy Springs areas.

On Thursday from 12-3 the ECBA will hold a ribbon-cutting for Weddington Realty (3020 Roswell Road, Suite 200) with owner Sarah Weddington, who’s specialized in residential and commercial properties in Georgia, Florida and Texas.

This Saturday from 11-1 is another ECBA ribbon-cutting for the grand opening of a Farmers Insurance office at 3225 Shallowford Road, Suite 120. The proprietor is Pamela Johnson.

Next Tuesday, March 19, the guest speaker at the ECBA’s monthly luncheon is Michael J. Cole, an Atlanta business executive and entrepreneur, who was the founder of the Great American Cookie Co., former CEO of Caribou Coffee and was a Congressional candidate. The Kennesaw State University business school is named after him.

The ribbon-cuttings are free events; the luncheon is $20-$30. Visit the ECBA website to sign up and for information for other events.

Also, every Friday morning the ECBA sponsors the East Cobb Open Networking breakfast, which starts at 7:30 a.m. at Egg Harbor Cafe (4719 Lower Roswell Road). There’s no registration; you just pay for your own meal and network with other local business professionals.

Boyce to speak to NCBA

Cobb Commission chairman Mike Boyce is the guest speaker at the March 20 luncheon of the Northeast Cobb Business Association, which goes from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Piedmont Church (570 Piedmont Road).

The NCBA’s signature event is the 5K-9 Race on June 8, also at the Piedmont Church, and registration is underway. Sponsorships are also being sought for the event, which raises funds for ongoing K-9 assistance efforts in Cobb.

Last year the NCBA raised funds for K-9s for an autistic child and for the Cobb Sheriff’s Office.

This year’s 5K-9 proceeds will be used to purchase a specially-trained comfort dog for the Cobb County District Attorney’s office to assist victims of child and elderly abuse.

Recently the Cobb Board of Commissioners recognized the NCBA for its $2K contribution to purchase oxygen masks for cats and dogs rescued by the Cobb Fire Department.

EAST COBB WEEKEND EVENTS: Dogs and cats; summer movies; Holy Trinity concert and more

Black Panther Sewell Mill Library, East Cobb Weekend Events

East Cobb Weekend Events are indoors and outdoors, full of summertime fun and relaxation, and also designed to help good causes for our furry friends.

Bright and early Saturday morning is the Northeast Cobb Business Association’s 4th annual 5K-9 run at Piedmont Church (570 Piedmont Road), which is raising funds for the purchase and training of a therapy dog for a PTSD military veteran. The first race starts at 8 a.m., and there’s walk-up registration and age-group awards. You can also bring your dog for a run/trot;

Need help writing or revising your resume? There’s a session from 11:30-12:30 Saturday at East Cobb Library that’s free, but you’ll need to register first;

Summer movie fun is also slated for Saturday afternoon at local library branches: “Grease” will be shown from 2-4 p.m. at the Mountain View Regional Library (3320 Sandy Plains Road) that’s part of its Rockin’ Summer Movie Series;

This is almost as good as a first run, and without the steep ticket prices: The acclaimed recent release of “Black Panther” will be shown from 6-8:30 Saturday in the Black Box Theater at the Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center (2051 Lower Roswell Road). It’s free, and you’re free to bring your own food and drink to take in the saga from the Kingdom of Wakanda;

Earlier on Saturday at Sewell Mill, from 2-5:30 p.m. is Teen Retro Game Day for kids between grades 6-12, and it’s a drop-in event where they can make friends and learn all about oldie goldie console games like Atari and Nintendo;

On Sunday is a special celebration. From 2-5 it’s the 30th anniversary of the Good Mews Animal Foundation (3805 Robinson Road), which began on Sandtown Road and has been in East Cobb most of the time since then. They’re offering free tours and you can bring your own gift (supply list here) for the felines they’re preparing for adoption;

From 4-6 on Sunday, a Choral and Orchestra Concert takes place at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (2922 Sandy Plains Road), which is performing John Leavitt’s “Requiem.” The sounds include the church’s famed pipe organ, and a reception is to follow.

Northeast Cobb Business Association 5K-9 Run to provide service dog for a veteran

The fourth running of the Northeast Cobb Business Association 5K-9 Run is taking place on June 9, and this year the event will be raising money for the purchase and training of a service dog for a military veteran. Northeast Cobb Business Association 5K-9 Run

The run starts at 8 a.m. at Piedmont Church (570 Piedmont Road), and NCBA is soliciting sponsorships (between $250 and $5,000) as well as accepting online registrations (between $10 and $25 in advance).

Frank Wigington of the NCBA said past events have raised funds for dogs for the Cobb County Police Department, the Cobb Sheriff’s Office and for an autistic child in East Cobb.

This year, the business group asked Cobb Superior Court Judge Reuben Greene to assist in finding a recipient for a service dog, and a veteran who is dealing with PTSD and other issues has been identified.

In remarks to his counterparts at the East Cobb Business Association on Tuesday, Wigington said the costs for the purchase and training have grown since the initial events raised around $15,000 each.

He said if this year’s event raises more money than what’s needed for the veteran’s dog, other proceeds will be provided to the Cobb Fire Department to purchase oxygen masks for dogs dispatched for rescue work, and possibly for iPads for special needs students in Cobb County.

“The money will be spent, but it will be spent wisely,” Wigington said.

The 5-K9 Run includes a puppy trot for children 8 and under that’s $10 in advance, and $15 on race day. The 5K run/walk is $25 in advance and $30 on race day.

Awards are presented to overall and masters winners, as well as several children’s age groups.

Anyone who is entered can bring their dog along for the event.
