On Friday America and many parts of the world paused to observe the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.
While there were numerous events throughout the week, schools throughout Cobb County incorporated those commemorations into their school day.
At Wheeler High School, Air Force ROTC cadets throughout the day climbed 2,200 steps at the football stadium to match the height of the 110-story buildings at the World Trade Center in New York that were destroyed by hijacked airplanes.
Each cade completed 50 laps in remembrance of New York firefighters, other first responders and the nearly 3,000 people who died on Sept. 11.
At Pope High School and Kell High School in East Cobb, students put out 2,977 flags on the school grounds to honor the memories of the fallen, repeating traditions at those schools in recent years.
And earlier this week, the East Cobb Civic Association visited Cobb Fire Station 21 on Lower Roswell Road to thank firefighters for their service.
“ECCA encourages all Cobb County residents to show their own appreciation to our service providers. We are grateful they are a part of our lives and we thank each of them for their commitment and service.”
