East Cobb Weekend Events: Memorial Day; Music in the Park; more

Another school year is completed, and summer vacation season looms.

But the Memorial Day weekend includes a number of local events to honor those who gave their lives serving the country, and to enjoy some splendid weather outdoors.

On Friday, Food Truck Friday continues at The Auto Accident Attorneys Group (1454 Johnson Ferry Road) from 4-7 p.m., a weekly event through June.

From 6-8, another Electric Avenue concert at the Central Boulevard area of The Avenue East Cobb (4475 Roswell Road). The Atlanta acoustic trio of Lilac Wine returns to the stage. Admission is free. While guests can bring their own food and lawn chairs, coolers and outside beverages are not permitted.

Wellstar Health System is the sponsor of the continuing Music in the Park series Sunday from 4-6 p.m. at East Cobb Park (3322 Roswell Road). Bring food, blankets and chairs to the concert pavilion to enjoy a “Bach to Rock” event. It includes performances from young people and is meant to introduce children to musical instruments and styles.

Several Memorial Day observations will take place in Cobb County on Monday, including at the Marietta National Cemetery (500 Washington Ave.) starting at 12 p.m. The guest speaker is Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation President Donna Rowe. The organizing committee is looking for volunteers to help Scout troops plant flags starting at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Other Memorial Day events include a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at Patriots Point in Acworth (4425 Beach St.) from 10-11 a.m. and a ceremony in Smyrna at 9:30 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial next to City Hall, 2800 King Street.

The City of Roswell also is having a Memorial Day observation starting at 11 a.m. at City Hall (38 Hill St.). The Roswell Garden Club will dedicate the Blue Star & Gold Star Families Memorial Markers. Live music and food trucks will be available after the ceremony.

Here’s a glimpse what’s going on in and around East Cobb for the Memorial Day holiday weekend:

Saturday
The Marietta Pops Orchestra Spring Concert features movie themes, orchestrations, pop standards and sing-alongs, from 7:30 to 9:15 p.m. at the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre, 117 N. Park Square, Marietta. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students. For info contact: marietttapopsorchestra.org or 770-874-8525.

Sunday
The Cheatham Hill Walk at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park includes a guided interactive tour by historian Brad Quinlin around Cheatham Hill, the Illinois Monument and the Dead Angle. Programs are at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Parking is at the Illinois Monument parking lot, 947 Cheatham Hill Drive, Marietta.

Monday
The Marietta Memorial Day 5K/10K Run takes place at the Sprayberry Square Shopping Center (2550 Sandy Plains Road) starting at 7:30 a.m. The entry fees range from $30-$40 and are free for veterans. Scenic course, finisher medals, tech shirts, awards for the top 3 overalls, top 3 masters overalls, grand master overall, senior master overall, and all the regular 5-year age groups. The Marietta Memorial Day Observance is a long-standing tradition, beginning at 12 noon at the Marietta National Cemetery (500 Washington Ave.). This year’s keynote speaker is Brig. Gen. Diana Holland of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, South Atlantic Division, and the honoree is the Georgia Vietnam Veterans Alliance. For more information, click here.

The Roswell Memorial Day Service begins at 11 a.m. at Roswell City Hall (38 Hill St.), and the guest speaker is Colonel (Ret) Patricia S. Blassie, Deputy Director, Directorate of Manpower, Personnel and Services, Headquarters Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC), Robins Air Force Base. Where to observe Memorial Day events in and around East Cobb

There’s one major Memorial Day event in East Cobb on Monday, a 5K/10K run at the LA Fitness Center on Piedmont Road at Sandy Plains Road that’s free for veterans to enter. There are several official Memorial Day observances nearby, including the Marietta National Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony.

That service starts at noon and the cemetery is located at 500 Washington Ave. It’s staged by the National Memorial Day Association of Georgia.

The event will be led by Georgia Army National Guard Brig. Thomas H. Blackstock, Jr., commander of the 78th Troop Command. Keynote speaker will be retired Army Maj. Gen. Charles M. Hood Jr. The reflections speaker will be Col. Edward “Rusty” Hightower, Georgia State Defense Force​ chief of staff at the Marietta cemetery.

The honoree organization is the Georgia World War I Centennial Commission, which will hold events around the state through November, the 100th anniversary of the end of the war.

Here are some other official Memorial Day events in Cobb and elsewhere:

  • At 9:30 a.m., Smyrna will hold its ceremony at the Twentieth Century Veterans Memorial, 2800 Bank Street (between Smyrna City Hall and the Smyrna Library). The event and parking are free and open to all. Scheduled speakers are retired Army Lt. Gen. Steve Arnold and retired Marine Gunnery Sgt. Victoria Turney. The ceremony will feature the Georgia Army National Guard Band, Campbell High School JROTC, and the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard;
  • At the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield (900 Kennesaw Mountain Drive, Kennesaw), also at noon, artillerists explain the steps of firing a cannon by detailing the role of each person working the cannon. Afterwards, the process is performed in real time and the cannon is fired. The program is free and open to the public;
  • At 11 a.m. at Roswell City Hall (38 Hill Street, Roswell) is Roswell Remembers, which says it’s the largest Memorial Day ceremony in Georgia and includes a 21-gun salute. Live music and BBQ will be available after the ceremony.
