Cobb under flood watch through Friday as storms approach

Cobb County is included in a flood watch over the next two days with the remnants of a tropical storm arrive from the Gulf of Mexico.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued the flood watch through 2 a.m. Saturday as heavy rains are forecast starting Thursday afternoon.

The forecast is predicting between 2-4 inches of rain in the flood watch area through Friday night, as well as high winds. There could be more than 5 inches of rain in some areas in the watch area, according to the NWS.

The NWS has issued a wind advisory, also including Cobb, from 2:30 p.m. Thursday to 8 a.m. Friday.

“A significantly moist tropical environment across Georgia will support high rain rates and increased chances for flash flooding,” states the NWS forecast, adding that “Urban areas, and areas with poor drainage, will be the most susceptible to flash flooding.”

Tropical Storm Arthur formed in the Gulf area earlier this week, making landfall along the Alabama coast and Florida panhandle before heading north.

Areas in the path of the storm have been under a tornado watch, which also is in effect for Cobb from 2:30 p.m. Thursday through 11 p.m. Thursday.

The chance of precipitation Thursday is 80 percent, and up to 100 percent Thursday night.

On Friday, the chance of rain will drop to 30 percent and to 20 percent by Saturday.

High temperatures are forecast to be in the low 80s and lows in the high 60s to low 70s throughout the weekend.
