EDITOR’S NOTE: A farewell grinder at Kouzina Christos

Christos restaurant farewell

Since 1979, the Giannes family has been serving up Greek and Mediterranean specialties at their restaurant in the Terrell Mill-Powers Ferry area.

What’s been Kouzina Christos since 2012 at the revitalized Terrell Mill Village Shopping Center first opened next door, at Terrell Mill Junction, at a time when that East Cobb community was undergoing a transition.

Christos Restaurant, as it was first called, later moved up the road a bit, at the Delk Spectrum Shopping Center at the corner of Powers Ferry, and continued to persist and thrive.

As other independent, mom-and-pop and chain restaurants came and left the area, Christos became a fixture. It seemed able to adapt to changing demographics and tastes in a busy commercial area with more competition from the national casual restaurant brands.

In three different locations, the Christos menu, and the familiar faces, have stayed essentially the same. In my many visits there, I thought of it as comfort food with a little extra spice.

But on Saturday, the long-standing eatery will be serving its final gyros, salads, sandwiches, pizzas and spanakopitas.

Owner Christos Giannes announced the restaurant’s closing on Monday, as first reported by ToNeTo.

The calamitous impact of COVID-19 closures was just too much, and Giannes said in a social media message he’s no longer working with his landlord “over options to remain operational.”

As far as restaurants go, anything over even 10 years can seem like an eternity, even in the pre-COVID-19 world.

But more than four decades? It’s stunning, really, a testament to a determined Greek immigrant family that loved serving up affordable, family-style meals to a loyal East Cobb community of customers.

Among them was my mother, who came to the original Christos in the early 1980s for lunch with co-workers from a nearby office park.

I was in college during those years, and after I returned she and I would go there often. I don’t remember what she liked in particular, but I know what I did: A very generous and tasty Italian grinder.

Over the years, I have gone there on occasion, typically for that Italian grinder at lunch.

On Wednesday, I did so again, for the last time, and the familiar flavors of Genoa salami, pepperoni, capicola, tomatoes, lettuce and Duke’s mayonnaise on toasted bread brought back fond memories.

Christos restaurant farewell

It was a bittersweet dining experience all the same, as I looked around and saw the beginnings of a packing-up.

Christos Giannes wasn’t there when I stopped in, but he’s been frank about the fate not only of his own restaurant but others like his during the long months of closures, partial reopening and government action over COVID-19.

He said on the restaurant’s Facebook page that Kouzina Christos was doing well before March, after some years of experimenting with an expanded menu to include Greek dinner delicacies, as well as the addition of an outdoor patio.

A proud champion of independent restaurants, he was critical of what he said is a “flaccid and shortsighted response from local, state and national sources for support to buttress businesses who’s loss will negatively affect business viability, employees, their families, the community, the schools is laughable. The losses to the foundation, the fabric that buttress our communities will be felt for many years.”

This is one of the greatest fears of business closures due to COVID-19, especially in the restaurant and retail sectors, and the horrible reality is unfolding before us everywhere.

Within eyeshot of Kouzina Christos is a brand new Panera Bread in the MarketPlace Terrell Mill development underway, and around the corner on Powers Ferry is a Jimmy John’s.

They’re known for their sandwiches, but they don’t have anything like my Italian grinder, much less the gyros and falafels of Christos.

I’m not knocking the chains; they’ve been oh-so-convenient with drive-through service and I’m as guilty as anyone of pulling in when the sit-down places were closed.

And that’s been just the problem.

Christos restaurant farewell

“Chains are happy to see the mass failure of independents, expanding the labor pool, increasing competition and increasing downward pressure on hourly wages,” Christos Giannes wrote. “Corporate greed and avarice…supporting the Chinese economy.”

He shares company with so many venerable dining and watering hole institutions, including Atlanta’s Manuel’s Tavern, where I had many a meal and adult beverage during my years at the AJC. Owner Brian Maloof, son of the famous barkeep and politico Manuel Maloof, doesn’t see how he can keep his doors open in Poncey-Highland beyond the end of the year.

That would end a 64-year run on land that is now owned by corporate real estate interests and is surrounded by pricey regentrification. Maloof has spurned acquisitions in the past from the likes of Hooter’s, and completely overhauled his freestanding building a few years ago.

Christos Giannes was becoming gradually pessimistic in the weeks and months over summer when he began discussing reduced rents for Kouzina Christos with his landlord.

In late August, he said “it’s quite probable this will be the final year of business in our present location. The continuing pandemic has made it almost impossible to maintain profitability.”

Another crippling factor is the surrounding office market, where many employees who can work from home have been doing so. That’s gutted the lunch business of places like Kouzina Christos that have always depended on it.

With the Terrell-Mill Powers Ferry area going through another transformation—with several mixed-use developments in the works yielding many new residential dwellings—the timing of Kouzina Christos’ closure is even more unfortunate.

For those of us who ate there somewhat regularly, it seemed like we’d be able to eat there forever.

The old-world feel of Kouzina Christos held up well over four decades, and it took something as devastating as a pandemic to close the doors.

I get many messages from readers asking about new restaurants that are opening—especially the new chain casual spots that are dotting East Cobb like never before.

What I’d like to ask my readers is to think of their favorite truly local restaurants these days and patronize them like never before. These are community gems that are teetering on the edge of extinction.

At the very least, many are trying to stave off a gradual death like Kouzina Christos, barely holding on amid continuing uncertainty and with no end in sight to health restrictions.

Kouzina Christos (1453 Terrell Mill Road) will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Saturday.

After that, Christos Giannes said “we will all take a long rest and start looking at other possible locations to build on our 40 years of history” including “options to re-imagine the next chapter of Kouzina Christos.”

I hope that chapter comes soon, and that the Italian grinder is on the menu.

Christos Restaurant farewell

Parkaire update: Moe’s closes; Flying Biscuit opening TBA

Moe's Parkaire closes

A reader alerted us to the closure of the Moe’s Southwest Grill at Parkaire Landing, which occurred in late October, after nearly 20 years in business.

ToNeTo Atlanta reported over the weekend that it’s the second Moe’s in East Cobb to close recently, along with a location at Shallowford Corners Shopping Center.

As for the Parkaire space, the standalone building at 688 Johnson Ferry Road, between Tijuana Joe’s and Regions Bank, will soon become a gusto! quick-serve spot.

Based in Atlanta, gusto! has seven restaurants in the area and recently opened at Avalon in Alpharetta. The menu includes salads, bowls and wraps, many with Tex-Mex ingredients.

A long-awaited restaurant opening at Parkaire is reportedly getting closer but there’s still no specific date that’s been announced.

That’s the Flying Biscuit Cafe, slated to open in winter 2020. The restaurant’s social media accounts have been updating with new photos and related postings—chicken and waffles have been added to chain’s menu.

The restaurant received its business license today, but for now the opening date is still TBA.

Flying Biscuit announced its return to East Cobb last August, and was preparing to open  this past spring when COVID-19 came. An old “coming soon” sign has been taken down, and it looks as though some renovating work is still continuing.

They’re updating on their Facebook page.

Restaurant news: Aurelio’s Pizza closes in East Cobb

Aurelio's Pizza closes East Cobb

The Vitt family, which has been operating the Aurelio’s Is Pizza location at Market Plaza in East Cobb (1255 Johnson Ferry Road, next to Red Sky), has announced the restaurant was closing.

The announcement was made on Monday, the same day the doors closed for good:

We want to offer our sincere thanks for your support. We thank you for your continued business over these last few months.

It is with great regret that we must inform you that we will be closing the Marietta Aurelio’s, as of today.

We have enjoyed our time running Aurelio’s of Marietta and considered it a pleasure to be a part of so many family memories.

We loved making your perfect pizza recipes, and we will miss it very much! Thank you for the support. We will miss you all.

Paul Vitt, a native of the Chicago area, opened the Chicago-style franchise on Johnson Ferry Road in June 2011.

The reaction from customers—more than 200 comments and running—was overwhelming, a mix of sadness, shock and gratitude for what for many was their favorite local pizzeria:

“I am heartbroken, it was a good run Mr. Vitt, wish you the best my friend…..thanks for the memories and the best pie ever…”

“My family and I moved here from Chicago. The Marietta Aurelio’s gave us a little taste of home. It will be very much missed.”

“This is our favorite pizza place and this is a big loss for East Cobb.”

“This may be the very worst news of 2020 and that is saying something. We are devastated that you’re going!!”

East Cobb restaurant update: Five Guys, Panera Bread opening soon

Five Guys East Cobb opening

We’re still waiting to get official word on a specific date but the new Five Guys location in East Cobb is a step closer to opening.

The former Del Taco space at the East Cobb Crossing Shopping Center (4269 Roswell Road) has been converted over the past weeks, and the final stages of the project are in progress.

That includes getting a business license, which the Cobb Community Development Agency said was issued Sept. 16.

Typically restaurants get business licenses right before opening their doors. We’ve left several messages with Five Guys for more details and will pass that along when we get them.

East Cobb Crossing also will be the location for the newest Publix store in East Cobb, with plans underway to occupy space next to Dick’s Sporting Goods. That was to have taken place this fall but there’s not an opening timetable forthcoming.

Five Guys, which specializes in gourmet hamburgers, has 48 other locations in Georgia, including Austell, Smyrna, Kennesaw, Sandy Springs, Roswell and Woodstock.

Also last week, a business license was granted for a Panera Bread location at the new MarketPlace Terrell Mill (1430 Terrell Mill Road).

It will be the second East Cobb location, along with The Avenue East Cobb. A Panera Bread location closed several years ago at the Pavilions at East Lake, on the site of a new Kroger gas station.

East Cobb restaurant news: Stem Wine Bar to reopen Friday

Stem Wine Bar

After being closed for more than six months due to COVID-19, the Stem Wine Bar dining room is reopening on Friday and reservations are being “strongly recommended.”

Reservations are a new feature for the last of Doug Turbush’s three East Cobb restaurants to reopen, following Seed Kitchen and Bar next door at Merchant’s Walk and Drift Fish House and Oyster Bar at The Avenue East Cobb.

Dine-in options will be available on Friday and Saturday and ticketed tasting events Tuesday-Thursday.

The delivery and curbside pickup service also starts on Friday and will be available Tuesday-Saturday.

A temporary tastings and wine menus will be offered inside, and the hours and services are as follows:

  • Tuesday-Thursday takeout and delivery, 5-9 p.m.
Tuesday-Thursday dine-in Ticketed Tasting Events Only
    Friday-Saturday takout, delivery and dine-in, 5-10 p.m.

One of the reasons Stem opened later was due to its small seating area, and a message announcing the reopening says that “we are adhering to social distancing guidelines and have implemented additional safety protocols.”

That includes reservations. Info: 678-214-6888. Address: 1311 Johnson Ferry Road.

East Cobb restaurant update: McCray’s Tavern opens at Parkaire

McCray's Tavern East Cobb opens

A “soft” opening of the new McCray’s Tavern in East Cobb has been going on for a couple of weeks, but now the restaurant at Parkaire Landing Shopping Center is making it official after posting a social media message Thursday.

Menus, hours and other details can be found here; when we talked with general manager Andrew McDonough he said a number of measures are being implemented in accordance with COVID-19 protocols, including spacing of tables.

The menu is similar to other McCray’s locations (and is the same for dining in or takeout), a mix of standard tavern fare and chef’s features. The dinner menu includes woodfire grill-cooked meats and fish and there is a drink menu with the promise of “sips and stogies,” with scotch and bourbon and cigar-rolling.

Online ordering and reservations are also available. Phone: 404-800-3553.

Kitchen hours are Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Bar hours are Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 12 a.m.

They’re also in the process of hiring two full-time bartenders. Apply to [email protected] or stop in Tuesday-Thursday 2-4 p.m.

East Cobb food scores: Mzizi Coffee; Which Which; more

Mzizi Coffee, East Cobb food scores

When restaurants shuttered due to COVID-19 closures in March, health inspections grounded to a halt for months, and there haven’t been many conducted at East Cobb establishments since then.

A handful of restaurants and other eateries have been inspected since late July by Cobb and Douglas Public Health, including the following listed below in East Cobb.

Inspectors have been making their rounds around the county during this time, they just haven’t stopped by many places here. For example, a good chunk of the inspections added to their database recently have been for the many food vendors at Six Flags and White Water.

Typically during the spring and summer, inspectors are busy with similar vendors at Truist Park and restaurants at The Battery, but with no fans allowed at Atlanta Braves games this year, there haven’t been any inspections.

Many restaurants are still operating at far below full dining room capacity due to physical distancing requirements everywhere.

Posting these scores has become a favorite topic for readers, so much so that we went from publishing them weekly, to every other week to weekly.

When we have enough East Cobb scores to report, we will post them as we have as follows. Click the link under each listing for details of the inspection:

Taste of East Cobb postponed for a second time, to May 2021

Taste of East Cobb

When organizers of the Taste of East Cobb delayed their springtime food festival, they were hopeful of pulling it off on Halloween.

But that’s not going to happen in 2020, due to “the continuing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,” per a message sent out on Wednesday.

Instead, they’ll be aiming for May 2021, the usual month the Walton Band fundraising event has taken place.

Co-chairman David Wilson said the second postponement was made “out of an abundance of caution, and to do our part to keep our community safe.”

As many businesses were closed during the spring, the Taste of East Cobb held a special “takeout” promotion to help local restaurants.

Most late summer-early fall events in East Cobb have been called off or delayed. The Noshfest at Temple Kol Emeth, held on the Labor Day weekend, is being pushed back to the spring.

The EAST COBBER parade and festival, slated for mid-September, was cancelled. Last week, the Rotary Club of East Cobb announced its early August Dog Days Run will be a “No K” event.

Also on Wednesday, officials with the North Georgia State Fair announced the annual late September-early October event at Jim Miller Park was being cancelled.

Former Burger’s Market owner opening weekend produce stand

Burger's Market closing
Burger’s Market closed on Canton Road in August 2018 after 45 years. (ECN file)

Following up our post about local weekend produce stands, comes some more good news for fresh vegetable and fruit fans:

One of the former owners of the Burger’s Market in East Cobb are starting one of their own, starting this Saturday. It’s been almost two years since the market closed on Canton Road, after 45 years in business.

Tina Burger Berry, daughter of the Burger’s Market founder Truman Burger, is taking online orders through 10 a.m. Thursday (details below). The pickup spot is the Daily Bread Cafe (531 Roselane St. in Marietta, near Kennestone Hospital, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

She and her sister Sharilyn have kept the market’s Facebook page alive, and on Monday, that’s where Tina announced the news about the pop-up market:

“I’ve been thinking and praying on a way to serve our loyal customers and community with the freshest, most local produce available like our family did for over 45 years every since we shut our doors and sold almost 2 yrs ago. When God closes one door, he always opens another. So, after much prayer and anticipation….HERE it goes!! We will not have a storefront, consider us more of a local mobile market of sorts.”

What they’re offering are fixed bags of vegetables ($25) and fruit ($20) and a make-your-own bag with a $15 minimum. Each Monday by 2 p.m. they’ll list the available items for that weekend’s market, with the deadline for ordering by 2 p.m. Thursday by e-mailing [email protected] or by filling out this form.

Payment is cash or Venmo, which is becoming the standard for some other pop-up stands that have emerged recently.

Orders will come in brown paper bags, but you’re free to bring your own bags or boxes. The first weekend items are as follows:

  • Fruit bag: Tree ripened peaches, Cantaloupe, Watermelon, Muscadines or Scuppernongs
  • Veggie bag: Vine ripe Tomatoes Stringless Pole beans, Sweet potatoes, Pickling cukes, Yellow crookneck squash, Georgia Kale, Silver queen corn, Vidalia onions
  • Make your own bag (items also sold individually): Okra, Vidalia onions, Red tomatoes , Fresh shelled lady finger peas or white butter beans, Zuchini Silver queen corn, Cantaloupe, Heirloom tomatoes, Watermelon, Green boiling peanuts.

Tina asked for patience us as we navigate through this new endeavor . . . We sure have missed you!! I can’t wait to see you beautiful people!!”
