Food festival update:

The organizers of the Taste of East Cobb announced recently that the event is being cancelled for the second year in a row due to continuing COVID-19 safety protocols.

The fundraising event for the Walton High School band programs is now slated for May 2022.

Last year the Taste of East Cobb was initially delayed to last fall, then to May 2021.

This year’s the Taste of Marietta, which was scheduled for late April, is being rescheduled to Oct. 24, according to the Marietta Visitors Bureau, which organizes the event.

In a release issued Monday the MVB said that “the safety and health of the community, vendors, artists, guests, and staff is the festival’s top priority. The Marietta Visitors Bureau will be monitoring and following recommendations from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Governor Kemp’s Executive Orders.”

Another major event in East Cobb already has been canceled for September. For the second year in a row, there will not be an EAST COBBER Parade and Festival for the same reasons.

East Cobb Flying Biscuit opening awaiting alcohol license

On Wednesday the new Flying Biscuit Cafe at the Parkaire Landing Shopping Center announced its opening was “one week out!”

(The restaurant is now saying the doors will open on Monday, March 15, starting at 7 a.m.)

It’s been nearly a year and a half since the popular Atlanta-based breakfast and brunch spot announced its return to East Cobb. Those plans were put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday, the Cobb Board of Commissioners will take up Flying Biscuit’s appeal of a denial of an alcohol license for beer, wine and Sunday serving.

It’s a routine process that happens frequently with new businesses selling or serving alcohol.

The Cobb County Code has distance requirements for those establishments regarding their location to homes, schools, religious institutions, parks, day care centers, addiction treatment centers and in the case of Flying Biscuit, a library.

The code states that any place serving alcohol must be at least 600 feet from a library. The East Cobb Library branch at Parkaire is 573 feet away in Parkaire.

So the initial alcohol license was automatically denied in January by the Cobb Business License Division.

Businesses can appeal to the Cobb License Review Board, a five-member appointed body, and on Feb. 24 that panel voted 4-0 to recommend approval.

Flying Biscuit hired Parks Huff, a noted Cobb zoning attorney, to handle the case, and he told the review board that the restaurant estimates that no more than 3 percent of its sales will be alcohol-related.

He also pointed to seven businesses nearby that have alcohol licenses.

Whenever a business makes such an appeal, it also has to fill out a lengthy questionnaire that requires many details to be explained about how the business will operate.

Restaurant manager Alexandra Baptiste said she plans to have 25 employees “when fully operational” and that staff will be trained every six months about alcohol sales.

When Flying Biscuit finally opens its doors—more than a decade after shutting them further up Johnson Ferry—the hours will be Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

East Cobb Tavern closes temporarily due to ownership change

Last week East Cobb Tavern said it was closing temporarily, but initially a reason wasn’t given.

That led to some speculation of a COVID-related closure, but the restaurant located in the Shallowford Corners Shopping Center said on its social media channels it’s because there’s an ownership change in the works.

The messages didn’t say when the restaurant will reopen. We left a message seeking more information and were told that there’s nothing definite yet.

After customers left well-wishing messages on the restaurant’s Facebook page, owner Sean McCall responded that he was hopeful the tavern’s general manager and kitchen manager would purchase the business.

“They’re great operators but Covid hurt us,” McCall said. “My wife and I are proud of the space but we can’t sustain anymore losses.”

East Cobb Tavern opened in Jan. 2020 after replacing Keegan’s Irish Pub, with a revamped menu that included items beyond traditional pub fare.

The tavern also had become the venue for dedicated sports team followers, including Notre Dame football.

The expanded tavern concept got a new addition in East Cobb in August with the opening of McCray’s Tavern at Parkaire Landing.

Drift closes temporarily due to employee positive COVID tests

Drift Fish House and Oyster Bar at The Avenue East Cobb announced Friday it’s closing temporarily:

“Despite our best efforts and safety protocols to control or prevent the spread of COVID-19, we have seen more than one employee test positive in the past 48 hours. Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our team and guests, we will be closing for 10 days. We anticipate resuming normal operations for dinner service on Tuesday, January 19th. Thank you for the support you have shown us since the onset of the pandemic. Please stay tuned to our social media channels for updates.”

Drift is one of three restaurants in the Seed Hospitality Group owned by Doug Turbush. It reopened in June after COVID closures in March, then closed temporarily in July for a few days when an employee tested positive for the virus.

Seed Kitchen & Bar and Stem Wine Bar at Merchants Walk remain open.

We’ve left word with the hamburger chain’s press office seeking more information but haven’t heard back.

East Cobb restaurant update: Five Guys closed temporarily

We got a reader tip that the newly opened Five Guys restaurant at East Cobb Crossing has closed, and this is what we saw when we arrived Saturday afternoon.

There was no reason given, and several other people had come by when we were there and noticed the same thing.

We’ve sent a message to the Five Guys corporate office seeking a response. The restaurant opened in October in the former Del Taco location (4269 Roswell Road) and got a business license in September.

The Orient restaurant coming to Powers Ferry-Windy Hill corner

All we know is what you see on the sign: The restaurant building that formerly housed Houston’s on Powers Ferry Road at Windy Hill Road soon will be occupied by The Orient, which will feature a variety of Asian cuisine.

We haven’t seen a business license that’s been granted and are working to learn more, and have been asked by a few people about what’s been stirring in that space even before the pandemic.

It’s been empty for more than two years, after Sage Woodfire Tavern closed up, after only a year in business.

The property at 3050 Windy Hill Road is not part of the former Restaurant Row that’s being replaced by a mixed-use development under construction.

That development, by Atlanta-based Greystar, will include the Rose and Crown Tavern, the last of the old Restaurant Row businesses to remain.

The new tavern will be included in the middle of the project along with a small amount of retail space. The major projects are the Elan at Powers Ferry, an apartment building, and Overture at Powers Ferry, an active senior-living community (and East Cobb News sponsor).

Further up Powers Ferry Road, the MarketPlace Terrell Mill project also is taking shape, with another major apartment building nearing completion.

For now, the only restaurants that have opened are a Panera Bread and a Wendy’s. A reader alerted us to a report in WhatNowAtlanta that there will be a Los Abuelos Mexican Grill coming next fall.

The project of Connolly Development and Eden Rock Real Estate Partners also will feature a Kroger superstore, but that’s slated for the final phase of construction,
