More than 100 sets of bands, school and community groups, baton twirlers and even unicyclists are lining up for what’s being called “the candy parade”—bring plenty of bags to take home treats.
At 11 a.m., a community festival takes place at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church (955 Johnson Ferry Road) until 3 p.m., featuring food, music, vendors and family fun (more details from our story last week).
Traffic alert: Johnson Ferry Road will be shut down between 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., so plan to arrive early and/or find an alternate route for parade parking.
Another community festival will be going on at the same time on Saturday, from 12-3 p.m. It’s the Auto Accident Attorneys Group Fall Kickoff Festival at the law firm’s offices at 1454 Johnson Ferry Road. Political candidates and other local activists will be speaking and there will be sign-up sheets for volunteers.

There’s plenty of music in the air this weekend across East Cobb, as the Christmas and Hanukkah seasons overlap.
Two East Cobb congregation choirs are joining together for what they’re calling “There’s A Song in the Air” concerts at each respective church.

The annual Christmas at Johnson Ferry festivities this year are dubbed “Sounds of the Season,” featuring a Christmas concert in the sanctuary, with the Johnson Ferry Baptist Church choir, orchestra, sing team, students and children in performance, followed by what we’re told are very, very snowy family activities in a winter wonderland setting.
The free events are Saturday-Sunday from 5-730 p.m. at the church (955 Johnson Ferry Road).

The Styckes Upon Thump Repertory Company embarks on its fifteenth annual tour of the Dickens classic, subtitled “A Traveling Travesty in Two Tumultuous Acts.”

The weather on Saturday should be pleasant enough for another Hyde Farm Walking Tour. Cobb PARKS leads tours at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. to explore the 1840s-era working farm, as well as fields, pastures an orchard and more natural wonders near the banks of the Chattahoochee River.
The tours are free and participants should gather near the red gate at the end of the parking lot. Call 770-528-8840 for information.
The Hanukkah season is getting underway, and once again the Chabad of Cobb synagogue will lead the celebrations with a Menorah Lighting at Avenue East Cobb on Sunday.

Cobb Commissioner Jerica Richardson has organized what’s called Cobb Family Day from 9-12:30 p.m. Saturday at Hyde Farm (721 Hyde Road) that includes a Cobb PARKS fishing rodeo.
The walking tours will take place at 10 and 11, and other activities include “Touch a Truck” with the Cobb Fire Department, cooking demonstrations from the UGA Extension Office, a “Story Walk” with Cobb Libraries and a scavenger hunt.
Everything but the fishing rodeo is free, which has a $5 charge, and you’ll need to sign up. The event is for youths 3-16, and trophies will be awarded for the biggest fish caught.
Also on Saturday morning, the newly formed East Cobb Park Garden Club is getting together for another outing from 10-11:30 a.m. as they tackle beautification efforts.
They’ll start out at the gazebo overlooking the back quad of the park, and are accepting new volunteers and donations.
The group was started by the Friends for the East Cobb Park volunteers organization.

And a couple of things going on at East Cobb Park (3322 Roswell Road) this weekend:
On Saturday, the Cobb County Water System will have a Sewell Mill Creek Cleanup event from 10-12:30. All the equipment will be provided; you should come with waterproof clothing and closed-toe shoes.
On Sunday, a second consecutive Music in the Park concert takes place from 4-6, featuring the local duo The Woody’s. It’s rescheduled from a postponement in April and is sponsored by Wellstar. From our calendar listings are some weekend events that will bring the month of April (and some predicted last-dash showers) to a close:
Saturday is expected to be warm and sunny all day, perfect for disposing of unwanted items at the Pope Band Recycling Day. Come by the Northeast Cobb YMCA (3010 Johnson Ferry Road) between 9-2 with your items (list of what’s accepted and not); cost is $10 per vehicle and extra disposal fees may apply for some items.
More plant sales are continuing, this Saturday near the Marietta Square. The Root House Plant Sale offers vintage and native Georgia plants for sale from 9-1 at the William Root House Museum and Garden (80 N. Marietta Parkway).
Bring your appetites and wear some good walking shoes all day Sunday at the Marietta Square, the venue once again for the 28th Taste of Marietta. It bills itself as the largest food festival in metro Atlanta, and from 11-7 you can nosh and enjoy live music, entertainment, kids’ fun and more.
The East Cobb restaurants on hand will be Alumni Cookie Dough, Jacobs Java Cafe, Smokehouse Q and The Freakin’ Incan. (Some of them will also be at The Taste of East Cobb next Saturday, and which East Cobb News is thrilled be involved in as a gold sponsor.)
There’s rain in the forecast on Sunday, when Music in the Park returns to East Cobb Park (3322 Roswell Road) from 4-6 p.m. If the weather cooperates, you’ll hear the cover tunes of the Loose Shoes Band, with a playlist ranging from classic rock, blues, pop and Motown to country music. Bring some food and blankets/chairs to the concert stage and dance away the rain.

With fall (and even wintry!) weather this week comes a flurry of seasonal and Halloween-related events in East Cobb over the weekend.
One event that’s a very important exception is coming up Saturday morning. The Credit Union of Georgia (an East Cobb News sponsor) is holding a Community Shred Event from 9:30 a.m. to noon at its East Cobb branch (1020 Johnson Ferry Road). The objective is to reduce identity fraud, and members of the public can bring up to one carload of documents to be safely shredded.

It takes place from 7-10 p.m. at Mabry Middle School (2700 Jims Road), and it’s a ticketed event to benefit the foundation’s work supporting the school’s academic programs and facilities improvements.
