In addition, the Atlanta-based fast casual chain announced that there will be free drive-thru service from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on  Saturday, Aug. 21. Here’s how that will work, per a gusto! release:

Other features from the Thursday grand opening:

Cobb Chamber seeks businesses for Partners in Education program

Submitted information:Cobb Chamber of Commerce

As the school year begins in Cobb County, the Cobb Chamber’s Partners In Education program is looking for businesses to become partners and serve local schools.

The Partners in Education Program is a collective effort of the Cobb Chamber, the Cobb County Public School District and Marietta City Schools that matches businesses and organizations with schools to provide extra funding, unique services and volunteer support. The vision behind the Partners in Education program is to enrich the learning experience of Cobb’s children so that all develop a strong academic foundation, skills and core values that will benefit them in their community life and in a career.

“The Chamber’s Partners in Education program has a long history of connecting businesses with local schools, sourcing Cobb’s schools with much needed resources,” said Sharon Mason. “As partners, businesses can make a positive impact on students by donating supplies and other items and volunteering at the school. These partnerships help schools and students to flourish.”

Participation in the program provides opportunities for businesses to:

  • Heighten awareness of present and future job needs.
  • Understand the quality and needs of the public school systems, whose health is vital to the community’s economic well-being.
  • Be recognized as a community involved company, which adds to public relations efforts.
  • Improve the education of future employees and customers.

Any business in Cobb County and the surrounding area is eligible to participate as a Partner in Education. Businesses that are also members of the Cobb Chamber receive a special badge and category in the Chamber’s membership directory to help promote their business as a key contributor to the education community.

For more information about Partners in Education, contact Twana Roots at troots@cobbchamber.org or Caroline Knowles at cknowles@cobbchamber.org.

The Avenue East Cobb to be managed by Avalon developer

The Avenue East Cobb summer events

The owners of the retail center The Avenue East Cobb have entered into a joint venture partnership with North American Properties, a commercial real estate company that owns the Avalon development in Alpharetta.

The partnership with present owners PGIM will “reposition the open-air retail community,” according to a statement issued Thursday.

According to a release, NAP plans to add upscale dining, create a central lawn, provide a concierge service for guests and conduct more events at the 230,000-square foot shopping center on Roswell Road.

NAP officials said in their announcement Wednesday that plans for The Avenue East Cobb center around creating a “downtown” atmosphere that the area has lacked.

A statement from Adam Schwegman, an NAP partner and senior vice president in Atlanta, said that “our plan is to create a socially magnetic place that pulls people together to hang out and connect with community. Utilizing best practices from our other projects, we’re excited to elevate this already great shopping and dining destination into a modern gathering place.”

The Avenue has held regular events for a number of years, including Santa rides during the Christmas holiday shopping season, outdoor movie screenings and car shows.

The restaurant additions at The Avenue will be “chef-driven” featuring patio space; the NAP announcement did not specify its plans for events and entertainment.

NAP will oversee leasing and management of the property, but a sale did not take place. A timeline for the renovations was not announced.

In the release, NAP managing partner Tim Perry said that “lifestyle centers like The Avenue East Cobb were designed to fill gaps in the market—the retail deserts between regional malls—by providing outdoor shopping for the community.

“As these communities have matured around them, they became the center of the community and while The Avenue East Cobb has remained a high-performing asset over the years, NAP sees an opportunity to elevate the destination into a true third place with a modern mix of retailers and restaurants.”

NAP is a Cincinnati-based retail developer with offices in Atlanta, and is currently overseeing a lengthy renovation to Colony Square in Midtown Atlanta. NAP also overhauled Atlantic Station, also in Midtown Atlanta, before selling it off.

Last year Chain Store Age named The Avenue East Cobb one of its “Top 10 Comeback Centers” after weathering closures due to COVID-19.

Created by Atlanta real estate developer Tom Cousins, The Avenue opened in 1999 on nearly 30 acres of land that once housed a golf driving range.

It was among the early models of an outdoor, pedestrian-friendly mall created as an alternative to enclosed suburban shopping centers, and attracted a mix of national retailers and locally-owned shops.

Currently The Avenue features Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Eddue Bauer; Gap, High Country Outfitters, Lululemon, Michael’s, Pottery Barn, Talbot’s and Williams-Sonoma.

Established local businesses include Olea Oliva, Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar, Stockyard Burgers, Ansley Atlanta Real Estate and K Squared Artisan Boutique.

NAP puts on more than 200 events annually at Avalon, according to Chain Store Age.

Avalon is a much bigger development than The Avenue East Cobb, with more than 2.3 million square feet of space on more than 80 acres. That includes office and luxury apartment space in addition to nearly 600,000 square feet of retail space.

PGIM purchased The Avenue in 2006 for more than $94 million, according to Cobb Tax Assessor’s records. A PGIM subsidiary, Poag Shopping Centers, still manages The Avenue West Cobb.

Northeast Cobb Business Association to hold 5K-9 event

Submitted information:

The North Cobb Business Association is proud to present the 6th annual 5K-9 Race and introduce The Barking Lot street market! This great fundraiser is a pet friendly, socially distanced event which raises money to purchase a service animal for Cobb County Students and Residents. The event will take place at Piedmont Church, 570 Piedmont Church, Marietta.

The race was founded when the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office lost one of its beloved canines.  NCBA wanted to start a fundraiser to aid the purchase of a service dog for the Sheriff’s Office. Thus, the 5K-9 Race was born. Since its founding, the 5K-9 event has raised money to provide service and support dogs for the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, the Cobb County Police Department, US Military Veteran, a student with autism, and most recently, the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office.

This year, for the first time in the event’s history, TWO service dogs will be placed with residents. The first recipient is a Cobb County student who struggles with autism. The second is a young woman living in Cobb County who has suffered multiple car accidents leaving her with partial paralysis.

Join us in supporting this very worthwhile fundraising event on June 12. For Race Sponsorship, click here. For Runner Registration, click here. For Barking Lot Registration, click here.

Kemp touts Georgia’s ‘resilience’ in response to COVID-19

Kemp Georgia COVID-19 response

Still chastened by Major League Baseball’s decision to move the All-Star Game away from nearby Truist Park, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp told a Cobb Chamber of Commerce audience Monday that the Atlanta Braves were also robbed on the field Sunday night.

“The refs screwed us at the Braves game Sunday night,” Kemp said, a reference to a controversial ninth-inning run by the Philadelphia Phillies that was upheld on a video review, and turned out to be the game-winner.

Kemp quickly moved on to assessing the state of the state, and especially its economic recovery and COVID-19 response, during the Cobb Chamber’s annual meeting at the Cobb Galleria.

During an appearance Saturday at AJ’s Famous Seafood and Poboys in East Cobb, Kemp blamed Democrats for MLB’s relocation of the All-Star Game due to Georgia’s disputed new election law.

On Monday, he defended the law and said the All-Star Game decision was “misguided.”

But “despite the actions by some to torpedo economic growth in the Peach State,” Kemp said, he’ll be eager to sign a new law providing tax incentives for Georgia companies that manufacture personal protective equipment.

The benefits of such measures, he insisted during a luncheon speech, “will expand opportunities for citizens across our state . . . . despite measures to try to divide us.”

(You can watch Kemp’s full address by clicking here; his remarks begin at the 37-minute mark.)

He said Georgians have “overcome a lot together and our future is bright.” While challenges remain, “I have never been more optimistic because we on our way to defeating the virus and returning to normal in the Peach State.

“Our resilience as Georgians has carried us this far,” Kemp said.

As of Monday afternoon, there have been more than 862,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Georgia since March 2020, and more than 17,000 deaths.

In Cobb County, there have been more than 59,000 cases and 932 deaths, the second-highest total in the state.

Kemp applauded Cobb officials and the Georgia National Guard for quarantining passengers from a California cruise ship at the start of the pandemic.

He said while some states wouldn’t take their own citizens for quarantine at the time, “this community stepped up. This is who we are as a state.”

Georgia was one of the first states to begin lifting COVID restrictions last April, and Kemp said the state is on the road to a strong economic recovery as a result.

The state has maintained its AAA bond rating, and in the recent legislative session major budget cuts were avoided and some funding was restored to areas such as education, public safety and health care.

A tax cut with a reduction in the standard deduction was also enacted this year, and Kemp said he also was proud of reforms to the state’s citizens arrest law.
