Taqueria Tsunami will be back at the 2026 Taste of East Cobb.

It’s just a couple of weeks away from the 20th Taste of East Cobb festival, and organizers are rolling out the lineups for food vendors, exhibitors and sponsors for the May 2 event at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church.

Some of the restaurants that have signed up thus far are newly opened, including Pho Hoa and Playa Bowls on Johnson Ferry Road. Many of the others will be familiar to regular festival attendees:

Bravo Company Roofing, a veteran-owned residential roofing company headquartered in Acworth, has announced the opening of its second location at 4343 Shallowford Road, Building 100, Suite 181, Marietta, GA 30062. To mark the expansion and give back to the community it serves, the company is launching a search for a local veteran, or the widow or widower of a veteran, who is in need of a full roof replacement or significant roof repairs — at no cost to the recipient.

The new Marietta office expands Bravo Company Roofing’s footprint across Cobb County and the greater northwest metro Atlanta region, strengthening service to homeowners in Marietta, Kennesaw, Acworth, Woodstock, Roswell, Alpharetta, Cartersville, and Dallas. The company specializes in architectural asphalt shingle roof replacements and repairs, gutter installation, and free drone-based roof inspections — a safer, more accurate way to assess storm, wind, and hail damage without walking the roof.

Operation Home Cover: Memorial Day 2026 Roof Giveaway

Through the program, Bravo Company Roofing will donate labor and materials for either a full architectural asphalt shingle roof replacement or, depending on the scope and condition, a combination of significant repairs for the selected recipient(s). Eligible candidates include veterans of any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, as well as surviving spouses of veterans, who own and occupy a home within the company’s service area and who are in genuine need.

Nominations are open to the public. Friends, family members, neighbors, churches, veterans’ organizations, and first responders are all encouraged to nominate a deserving homeowner. Self-nominations are also welcome. Nominations can be submitted at https://bravoroof.com/heroes and will be accepted through Friday, May 15, 2026. The recipient will be announced on or around Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2026, with the roof work scheduled in the weeks that follow.

East Cobb audiologist named AAP distinguished fellow

Dr. Melissa Wikoff, founder of Peachtree Hearing, has beenawarded the prestigious designation of Distinguished Fellow of the American Academyof Audiology (DFAAA) through the James F. Jerger Program of Distinction, one of the highest honors in the field of audiology.

The DFAAA designation recognizes audiologists who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, sustained contributions, and a meaningful impact on the profession beyond their clinical practice. Recipients are selected by a national review committee for theirexcellence across multiple areas, including leadership, clinical expertise, and community outreach.

Dr. Wikoff’s work has focused on advancing tinnitus care, expanding access to hearing healthcare, and community service. She has served in national leadership roles, including two terms on the Board of Directors of the American Tinnitus Association, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Audiology Practice Standards Organization. She currently serves locally on the board of directors at City Springs Theatre Company.

“I am incredibly honored to receive this recognition,” said Dr. Wikoff. “This profession has given me the opportunity to change lives every single day. My passion for audiology began at a young age after watching my grandfathers, both World War II veterans, struggle with hearing loss and miss out on meaningful moments with their families. That experience has stayed with me and continues to drive my commitment to ensuring that no patient feels that same sense of isolation.”

Through her private practice, Peachtree Hearing, Dr. Wikoff has become a recognized leader in tinnitus treatment and hearing healthcare. Her work extends beyond the clinic through national education initiatives, international collaboration, and extensive community outreach.

Among her most impactful efforts is a program she founded to provide hearing aids and ongoing care to Holocaust survivors in the Atlanta community, along with accessibility initiatives such as open-caption movie events, theater accessibility advocacy, and public education campaigns on hearing health.

The Distinguished Fellow designation reflects not only Dr. Wikoff’s professional accomplishments, but also her ongoing commitment to elevating the standards of care within audiology and improving the lives of those with hearing loss.

Dr. Wikoff will be formally recognized at the American Academy of Audiology Annual Convention.

Fire damages home in neighborhood on Johnson Ferry Road

Cobb Fire and Emergency Services is investigating a house fire that broke out early Friday morning in a subdivision off Johnson Ferry Roa. Cobb Fire Department fireworks safety reminder

The fire took place at a home on Savannah Ridge Drive, in the Savannah Ridge subdivision, located close to Cobb Fire Station 15.

Lt. Stephen Bennett of Cobb Fire said that the fire likely started in a bedroom and spread into the attic.

He said that crews arrived on the scene and put out the fire before it spread through the rest of the home and conducted search efforts.

“The fire was controlled and all residents were outside of the home prior to our arrival,” he said, adding that there were no reports of injuries to residents or firefighters.

The Loose Shoes Duo kicks off the East Cobb Park spring concert series Sunday.

With beautiful weather in store all weekend, there’s plenty going on—most of it outdoors—in and around East Cobb. The highlights, from our calendar listings:

It’s an especially big weekend for garden lovers, as the Cobb Master Gardeners 26th Annual Plant Sale and Expo takes place Friday and Saturday at Jim Miller Park (2245 Callaway Road).

There are activities for all ages, with plants homegrown by the Master Gardeners, a Kids Corner and more. Hours are 10-4 and admission and parking are free.

Running alongside that event at Jim Miller Park from 10-4 Saturday is the Cobb Arts Festival, which features a wide range of handmade goods, artwork, and creative treasures, food trucks, live performances and and interactive arts experiences for kids.

As with the plant sale, admission and parking are free.

If you’re doing some spring cleaning, the Pope Band Recycling Day on Saturday the place to bring by household items that they can take in (list here with accepted items and fees). The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Northeast Cobb YMCA (3010 Johnson Ferry Road).

Kitten season is here, and the volunteers at Good Mews will be holding a Kitten Shower from 11-1 Saturday to teach how to care for kittens. It’s free at the Wellstar East Cobb Health Park (3747 Roswell Road), and you’re asked to sign up here.

Is there a hole in your favorite shirt, but you don’t know how to fix it? Stitched Gifts and Parkaire Landing Shopping Center are holding a free session on Saturday, Wear It, Fix It! A Clothing Repair Clinic, at the East Cobb Library (4880 Lower Roswell Road). You’ll learn the basics of sewing and repair skills. There will be repair supplies and repair guides on hand. No alterations will be performed. The event is free and no registration is required.

For those who like to dabble in color, Paint Like Bob Ross is an introduction to the techniques of an art master with a certified instructor. The class is from 4-6 Saturday at the Peachtree Art Center (2601 Sandy Plains Road), and all age groups are welcome. The cost is $45 a person and all materials will be supplied.

Sunday is the return of live concerts at East Cobb Park (3322 Roswell Road) and this spring’s concert series features the familiar Loose Shoes Duo, who will play popular blues and rock favorites from 3-5 at the concert shell. It’s free and you’re invited to bring blankets/chairs and food to enjoy.

Cobb libraries to hold Vision to Learn mobile clinics

Cobb County Public Library is partnering with national nonprofit Vision To Learn to host mobile clinics during the upcoming summer break months. Returning to library locations through July, the professionals offer free eye exams and prescription glasses for children ages 5-18, building on their partnership with the library system that began in 2018.

Wheeler Robotics teams advance to FIRST World Championships

Our FRC team has officially qualified for the 2026 FIRST World Championship in Houston this April. In addition to this, we placed 2nd at the State Championships this weekend and are currently ranked 4th in the state. We also were given the Judges Award awarded by the judging panel to recognize teams for unique efforts, exceptional performance, or team dynamics.

Man charged with attempted murder of woman at East Cobb home

A Marietta man is being held without bond for the attempted murder of a woman at a home in East Cobb last week.Cobb Police, Holly Springs Road suspicious person, East Cobb crime forum

An arrest warrant for William Hensley, whose home address is listed on Franklin Gateway in Marietta, said he is facing felony charges of aggravated assault with intent to murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment, burglary and other charges.

According to the warrant, Hensley went to a home in the Heritage Glen subdivision in East Cobb on the evening of April 5, gaining access with a copy of a house key without the permission of a woman who resides there.

He then held the woman against her will, tying her hands and legs together and holding her on a bedroom floor, according to the warrant.

Cobb Police the suspect also placed tape over her mouth, “placed a belt around her neck, and made threats to kill and cut said victim up into pieces by using a large kitchen knife” that he was holding.

According to the warrant, the victim had multiple lacerations to her head and multiple markings on her forearm and legs.

The warrant states that Hensley also was charged with misdemeanor counts of battery-family violence, loiter prowl, and sexual battery. The Cobb Sheriff’s Office said Hensley was taken into custody the following day, April 6, at his Franklin Gateway residence.

A bond hearing has been set for Hensley for May 6, according to the Cobb Magistrate Court Clerk’s Office.

Cobb Commissioner JoAnn Birrell said Tuesday she wants to set aside $3 million in a proposed Cobb Special-Purpose Local-Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) extension to address flooding problems along Columns Drive and in the Sope Creek watershed area near the Chattahoochee River in East Cobb.

She also wants to create another proposed line item for $2 million for upgrades, maintenance and improvements at county parks in her District 3, which covers most of East Cobb.

At a Cobb Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday, Birrell said she is requesting to shift that $5 million total in proposed funding that had been earmarked for the construction of a new East Cobb Library branch, which came in with a price tag of $25 million on a SPLOST project list released in January.

She said that the new library, which would move from Parkaire Landing Shopping Center to a freestanding building on county property, would be slated for $20 million on a SPLOST project list that commissioners will be asked to finalize later this month.

Birrell announced those changes after a brief presentation of public feedback for the 2028 SPLOST, which could go out to a November referendum. Commissioners are expected to vote on establishing a referendum by June.

If that SPLOST is approved by the public, the one-percent sales tax would be continued for a six-year period starting in 2028, and would collect an estimated $1.15 billion for a variety of county construction and maintenance projects.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Deputy Cobb County Manager Bill Volckmann revealed results of an online survey about the 2028 SPLOST, saying that of the 2,088 responses, 84 percent were in favor of renewing the sales tax.

But when breaking down their views of specific projects, only 25 percent said they would support rebuilding the East Cobb Library.

In another sample, 55 percent of respondents said they viewed the East Cobb Library rebuild favorably, while 45 percent said they did not support it (see the slides below for more).

Birrell said that a new library is needed because the county is spending nearly $400,000 a year in rent at Parkaire Landing, and because it’s the second-busiest branch in the Cobb system and is running out of room.

The East Cobb Library has 17,000 square feet of space, and includes study and meeting rooms as well as a community meeting space. The proposed new branch would have 28,000 square feet at a location that hasn’t been determined.

“We’re still building a nice library, approximately the same square footage, and building our own building,” Birrell said.

But she said other spending needs for the 2028 SPLOST have come up in her district. Sope Creek flooding issues were emphasized by citizens during a recent effort to replace trees along Columns Drive.

In reading from prepared remarks, Birrell said Cobb DOT and Cobb Water would use that $3 million in funding to “provide support to flooding and stormwater projects within the Sope Creek watershed.”

Columns Drive has been easily flooded in heavy rains, in particular in September 2021, when many residential areas in East Cobb were damaged and destroyed due to stormwater problems.

Specific projects for the $3 million, according to Birrell, could include watershed analysis, the bridge on Columns Drive over Sope Creek, flood plan acquisition, offline water retention facilities, streambank restoration and other public stormwater improvements.

She didn’t specify the $2 million in funding for park improvements, but they would apply only to “existing parks and recreation facilities within District 3.”

Birrell has come under fire recently for proposed changes at Shaw Park from some softball parents, who have claimed that proposed pickleball additions would limit softball availability. That proposal has been put on pause for the time being.

Birrell is a four-term Republican who is seeking re-election, but she has a primary opponent in first-time candidate Chris Wasserman.

Friends rally to aid woman needing double-lung transplant

Friends and family of an East Cobb-area woman who needs a double-lung transplant are asking for the public’s help in raising funds for her surgery.

Cassidy Dinsmore, 25, is a human resources professional who was recently diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, “and her health has declined rapidly, making this surgery her only option for survival,” according to an appeal on GoFundMe.

More than $29,000 has been raised since November, and the goal is to reach the $60,000 mark (GoFundMe page here).

Since November, friends and family have raised that funding through raffles and art sales, according to Grace Stringer, who is organizing the appeal on Dinsmore’s behalf as part of what’s being called “Cassidy’s Second Wind Team.”

Stringer said that in addition to the medical bills, Dinsmore will have to pay for housing and other expenses related to the transplant surgery for three months at the Emory University Hospital near Decatur.

“Funds raised will go directly to her transplant surgery, recovery costs, and the long and strenuous journey of healing that follows,” Stringer said.

“Please consider donating to the ray of sunshine herself, Cassidy Dinsmore. Every donation, share, and message of support brings Cassidy one breath closer to a new beginning. She deserves the option for a better life.”

Restaurant Update: Tenku Sushi to open at Avenue East Cobb

The long-awaited Tenku Sushi restaurant at Avenue at East Cobb is closer to opening its doors.

Jamestown, the retail center’s management company, announced Monday that the grand opening has been set for Tuesday, April 28.

The Japanese restaurant, officially known as Tenku Sushi Elevation (for the rooftop bar that it features) is the second Tenku Sushi, following the original location in Woodstock, and will occupy one of the Avenue East Cobb’s “jewel box” standalone spaces.

It includes 2,500 square feet of space with a main seating area, sushi counter and the rooftop bar.

The menu “highlights fresh fish sourced directly from Japan and premium Japanese wagyu, alongside expertly crafted nigiri and sashimi, signature rolls, robata grills, and curated omakase offerings,” according to a company release.

On Friday Tenku Sushi had its initial inspection from Cobb and Douglas Public health and received a score of 100.

The redevelopment of Avenue included two “jewel box” spaces aimed at restaurant space. The first jewel box was occupied mostly by Press Waffle Co., which closed in February. A smaller portion of that space is occupied by the L’Occitane en Provence beauty store.

Tenku Sushi’s opening hours will be Monday-Thursday from 12-10 p.m.; Friday-Saturday from 12-10:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The future of early childhood education in East Cobb took a major step forward today as Celebree School of Marietta at Shallowford officially broke ground at its new location, 3930 Shallowford Road.

The celebratory event brought together community leaders, educators, family, and friends to mark the beginning of construction on a school designed to provide a nurturing, family-focused learning environment for young children. Representatives from the Cobb Chamber of Commerce—including Elizabeth Colletti, Jesus Martinez, Kimberly Harmon, and Alex Reed—were in attendance, alongside Celebree School leadership, CEO Richie Huffman and COO Allison Tsomos.

The Marietta location is owned and operated by Jyoti and Rajesh Solanki, marking their first Celebree School franchise. For Jyoti Solanki, the milestone represents the realization of a lifelong dream rooted in her years of experience as an early childhood educator.

“It has always been my dream to open a school that feels like family, where I can bring my passion for educating young people and know that we are helping grow people big and small,” said Jyoti Solanki.

Jyoti, who spent over a decade as a Pre-K teacher, was joined at the event by former students ranging from elementary through high school, as well as former colleagues, directors, and mentors who have been part of her educational journey. Their presence underscored the lasting impact of her work in the classroom and the strong community ties that will help shape the new school.

Set to open in July 2026, Celebree School of Marietta at Shallowford will offer programs for children from as young as six weeks old through Pre-K, with a focus on comprehensive early childhood development in a safe, engaging, and supportive environment.

Walton Robotics qualifies for FIRST World Championships

The Walton High School Robotics team has qualified for the FIRST World Championship in Houston later this month. Here’s what the club is telling the community about what they’ve done, and what’s next:

“After a long season competing across the Peachtree Robotics District, we’ve earned one of the few spots to represent Georgia against 600 of the best teams from around the world. Our 40 students have been putting in hours upon hours of work to build, program, and test our robot, and that effort has paid off.

“Beyond the competition itself, we’re proud of the footprint we have here in East Cobb. Between running our summer camps for local kids and maintaining a full-size practice field that we share with other robotics teams in the community and across the state, we try to make sure Walton Robotics isn’t just about our success on the field, but about giving back to our community.”

The FIRST World Championships take place from April 29–May 2.

Suspect flees after trying to run down Cobb Police officer

Cobb Police said Sunday they’re looking for a suspect who got away during an early-morning incident on Terrell Mill Road after he tried to run down an officer.Cobb Police, Holly Springs Road suspicious person, East Cobb crime forum

Sgt. Eric Smith said that an officer shot at the suspect’s vehicle after police were called to Terrell Mill Road and Brookview Drive around 5:45 a.m. Sunday.

Smith said they were responding to a report of a driver asleep in a black Mercedes SUV at the intersection, which is the entrance to the Terrell Mill Estates subdivision.

He said officers saw a driver asleep inside the vehicle, and they placed a patrol car in front of the Mercedes; a fire apparatus was already behind the vehicle.

But as officers tried to wake up the driver, he refused to follow their commands, and the Mercedes collided with both of the other vehicles, according to Smith.

The driver then drove toward an officer, who returned fire, striking the Mercedes, according to Smith, who said that “it is unknown whether the driver was struck by gunfire.”

He said the Mercedes fled southbound on Terrell Mill Road, but police lost contact after a brief pursuit.

Smith said police don’t have an identity of the driver, and that the Cobb Police Major Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate.

We’ve been doing some replanting to help readers find what they’re looking for in East Cobb.

It’s been a while since we updated the links on the East Cobb News Community Guide that launched with this website nearly nine years ago.

We’ve been doing some spring cleaning, and it’s been long overdue.

We had quite a few outdated links—Cobb County government changed its domain from .org to .gov recently—but a lot of schools, churches and community organizations have revised their websites as well. Office-holders change, and entities come and go or move.

So what you see below is a major refresh to our listings, and like homeowners cleaning out the garage, we scratched our head as we went along, muttering, “Why didn’t we do this sooner?”

This guide is an important part of our mission at East Cobb News, which is three-fold. In addition to giving you timely and relevant local news and offering local businesses dynamic digital advertising solutions, we also want to be the go-to source for community-building in East Cobb.

Atlanta Falcons star visits East Cobb YMCA spring break kids

Kyle Pitts, starting tight end of the Atlanta Falcons, was the surprise guest at the spring break camp of the McCleskey-East Cobb Family YMCA this week.

He stopped by on Wednesday not only to visit with 60 Atlanta-area kids in attendance, but also to present a a $21,500 check to cover the full cost of the camp for those families, courtesy of Whataburger.

The event included a Whataburger food truck and activities, among them a visit from Freddie the Falcon, Pitts running races with kids and signing capes and mini footballs.
