East Cobb Weekend Events: Party in the Patch, Sunday Funday and more

Jerry Hightower, East Cobb weekend events
Jerry Hightower of the Chattahoochee NRA will speak to the Cobb Master Gardeners on Saturday at the Wright Enivironmental Education Center.

Now it’s really starting to feel like fall, with very cool temperatures coming in this week and a couple more weeks before Halloween. East Cobb weekend events are ideal for those and other activities of the season.

On Friday, high school football continues with key region games giving East Cobb teams a shot to jockey into playoff position.

At Wheeler, it’s homecoming, as the Wildcats take on East Coweta. Lassiter is also at home to face Roswell, Kell entertains Carrollton and Sprayberry will meet Dalton.

Walton stays on the road to play Etowah. All those games kick off at 7:30 p.m. At 8 p.m., Pope plays at North Atlanta.

The final weekend of CenterStage North’s season finale, “Point of Order, continues at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at The Art Place (3330 Sandy Plains Road). Tickets are $20 each.

More board-trotting, this on the high school stage, as Pope Theater completes its presentation of “Edward Foote,” a Southern Gothic mystery set in the Depression-era Appalachians, on Friday and Saturday, both at 7 p.m., as well as a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee. The shows take place in the school’s performing arts theater (3001 Hembree Road), and tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, as the Pope troupe prepares for next weekend’s Georgia High School Association One Act Regional Competition.

Weekends are ideal for getting the stress out, and on Saturday, you can learn how to handle it at a special Breathing and Meditation Session from 11-12:30 at the Mountain View Regional Library (3320 Sandy Plains Road). Khyati Doshi of The Art of Living Foundation will discuss how you can find your “space” with the simple act of breathing. The session is free but you should dress comfortably to practice some new breathing techniques.

If the rain holds off on Saturday, it should be a great day to explore one of East Cobb’s underrated nature preserves. From 12:30-2:30 p.m., the Cobb Master Gardeners Open Garden features a “walk and talk” at the Wright Environmental Education Center (2663 Johnson Ferry Road), led by Jerry Hightower, Park Ranger at Chattahoochee National Recreation Area. The event is free and parking is available at the adjacent Chestnut Ridge Chistian Church.

If you love high school marching bands, Sprayberry High School is the place to be Saturday for the 36th annual Southern Invitational Music Festival. Bands from around Cobb, metro Atlanta and Georgia will be performing in a judged competition, and the Sprayberry Band of Gold will be giving an exhibition performance at 7:45 p.m. Tickets are $10 adults, $5 students with an ID, and free for kids 6 and under. Everything takes place at Jim Frazier Stadium (2525 Sandy Plains Road).

Halloween events are starting to kick into gear, and one of East Cobb’s longstanding pumpkin fests is the Party in the Patch at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church (1770 Johnson Ferry Road). It’s free family fun starting at 5 p.m., so bring the kids in their costumes and enjoy a pumpkin maze, face painting, jumpy houses, family fun and more. A movie screening begins at 7:30 p.m., and they’ll have pumpkins on sale until 7:30 p.m.

UPDATE: Party in the Patch has been delayed due to rainy weather to Sunday, starting at 4:30 p.m., with a double-feature film starting at 7:15 p.m.

Sunday should be gorgeous, sunny and in the mid 70s, and it’s the last Sunday Funday of the year from 4-6 at East Cobb Park (3322 Roswell Road), presented by WellStar. The McCleskey-East Cobb Family YMCA will have Yoga and Zumba classes, Soccer Clinics, and kids activities. Bring a picnic and enjoy the Loose Shoes Band.

East Cobb Weekend Events: Consignment Sale; Sunday Funday and more

Good Mews 30th birthday, East Cobb weekend events
Good Mews is having a car wash Saturday that will benefit continuing operations and the addition of 36 cats from a Glynn County shelter.

It’s going to be sunny and hot this weekend, much like it has this week and is forecast to be in the days ahead. In East Cobb over the next few days, there are a lot of events to choose from, both indoors and outdoors, all the way to Sunday evening.

Here’s a look at some of the highlights from our Events Calendar:

Another Kid’s Consignment Sale gets underway Friday at the Episcopal Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (1795 Johnson Ferry Road) which opens its doors 9-6 and then on Saturday 9-12. There are more than 300 items, with the price reduced by 30 percent on Saturday. For information: http://spspkids.com/.

A full slate of High School Football is on tap Friday, with two more East Cobb rivalry games in store after last week’s rousing games. The headliners are Pope at Walton, and Kell at Lassiter. Wheeler is at home to Shiloh and Sprayberry is having an early homecoming against South Cobb. Kickoff times at all venues are 7:30 p.m.

On Labor Day we wrote about how Good Mews staff and volunteers evacuated more than 50 cats from a Glynn County Shelter that would otherwise have been euthanized ahead of Hurricane Dorian. The no-kill Good Mews has a regular list of fundraising events on tap, and has been asking for special donations for this emergency addition to their ranks. On Saturday they’re having a benefit car wash from 10-2 at their shelter (3805 Robinson Road). A $10 donation gets you a clean car and the proceeds helps Good Mews earn “bonus dollars” from the Best Friends Animal Society, which offers some matching donations.

Get your family moving Saturday at the library: It’s Family Zumba, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Mountain View Regional branch 3320 Sandy Plains Road. At the East Cobb Library (4880 Lower Roswell Road), another drop-in event is taking place from 11-1. The Chinese Moon Festival is a presentation of The Alliance of Youth Leaders in the United States East Cobb Branch, Walton High School, and the local Chinese School.

Starting at noon Saturday, Sandy Plains Baseball will be celebrating its 50th anniversary with special ceremonies and opening games to follow the rest of the afternoon at Carl Harrison Park (2653 Shallowford Road).

Gospel music will fill the rafters Saturday night at Elizabeth Baptist Church (315 Kurtz Road), which welcomes the Gold City Quartet for a concert from 6-8. The event includes several other performers, and the requested donation is $10.

Wind up the weekend outdoors at East Cobb Park (3322 Roswell Road): It’s another Sunday Funday event from 4-6 p.m. and the McCleskey-East Cobb Family YMCA will be hosting many family friendly activities, like Yoga and Zumba classes, Soccer Clinics, and kids activities. EAST COBB WEEKEND EVENTS: Marietta Greek Festival; Cobb Wind Symphony Young Person’s Concert; more

Marietta Greek Festival

We may be dancing around some raindrops all weekend, but the dancing—as well as eating and shopping and so much more—will go on rain or shine at the Marietta Greek Festival. It leads off a festive slate of East Cobb Weekend Events, as another school year comes to a close and summer activities will be coming soon.

The 28th annual Marietta Greek Festival is a three-day extravaganza of food, shopping, fun and a celebration of Greek culture, kicking off at 3 on Friday and lasting until sundown on Sunday at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Catholic Church (3431 Trickum Road).

A $5 admission ticket is charged for adults, while kids 12 and under get in for free. If you can’t park onsite, a free shuttle will be provided at the following locations, and parking is also free:

  • Simpson Middle School – 3340 Trickum Road;
  • Church of Latter-Day Saints – 3195 Trickum Road;
  • Lassiter High School – 2601 Shallowford Road.

The hours are from 3-11 Friday, 10-11 on Saturday and 11-6 on Sunday.

There’s a main food tent, a selection of street food options, desserts and beverages, all representing the rich culinary range of Greece.

The entertainment schedule covers the span of the festival, and there are vendors, cooking demonstrations, children’s activities and church tours.

Proceeds from the festival benefit Northwest Atlanta Metro Habitat, The Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society, Inc., a Greek Orthodox women’s ministry that works with other Christian philanthrophies.

Friday and Saturday are the last curtain calls for “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” a comedy musical revue that starts at 8 both nights at The Art Place-Mountain View (3330 Sandy Plains Road). It’s the last presentation for CenterStage North until August, when “On Golden Pond” will be featured;

If cooking at home, and making throw-back dishes is more to your taste, a new spring-and-summer series gets underway Saturday at the Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center (2051 Lower Roswell Road).

It’s called Retro Recipes, and from 12-1 Saturday, you’re invited to bring an old family appetizer recipe as participants make and share dishes. The series runs through August;

Stick around at Sewell Mill for its monthly Local Lens feature from 4-5. This month’s film professional is Ashley Nichole Smith Carlson, an Atlanta filmmaker who will share her thoughts about her favorite films, and cinematic storytelling.

As the weekend winds down, and the last couple days of school approach, local musicians will be taking the stage Sunday at the Lassiter Concert Hall (2601 Shallowford Road). It’s the Cobb Wind Symphony Young Person’s Concert, and pre-concert kids’ activities start at 2, with face-painting, an instrument petting zoo and other activities. The music starts at 3. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.

East Cobb this weekend, Sope Creek Garden Club Plant Sale

The flowers outside Eastside Baptist Church aren’t officially part of Friday’s Sope Creek Garden Club Plant sale that kicks off a full slate of East Cobb Weekend Events, but it’s certainly an enticing invitation to get and stay outdoors.

The weather’s going to be splendid most of the weekend, with cloudy skies and a chance of rain showers on Saturday.

The plant sale mentioned above takes place from 11-6 Friday at Eastside Baptist (2450 Lower Roswell Road), and there’s free admission. In addition to the plants, they’ll be selling decorative garden items, containers, plant stands and related items as part of one of their primary fundraisers;

The registration cost is now $40, and sign-in starts at 6 a.m. on race day. It’s also a USATF qualifier and age-group winners will receive beaded necklaces made in the East African nation and brought back for the race;

Admission is free for the Walton HS band fundraiser, and sample tickets vary from $1-$5, with nearly 30 local restaurants participating. EAST COBB WEEKEND EVENTS: Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations; Cobb Wind Symphony; prep wrestling and more

Holiday Lights East Cobb Park
The Christmas tree at East Cobb Park will be joined on Sunday by Chabad of Cobb’s coin Menorah in an event that benefits Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

The last weekend of holiday activities before Christmas is busier than usual since some were rescheduled due to the winter storm, and that’s where we’ll lead off in noting East Cobb weekend events over the next few days:

  • The Empty Bowl Brunch at The Art Place-Mountain View (3330) Sandy Plains Road) was to have taken place last Sunday, but it’s just been moved a week, and at the same time this coming Sunday 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. as the original schedule. The cost is also the same; a $15 ticket gets you a handmade soup bowl to fill as often as you like, with the proceeds benefitting MUST Ministries;
  • Another delayed event is the final local holiday market of the season. The St. Nicholas Holiday Market goes from 12-4 on Sunday at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church (3431 Trickum Road), with gift items, crafts, jewelry and Greek food goodies;
  • Also in its final weekend is the Good Mews Holiday Decor Market (1860 Sandy Plains Road), which is open until 6 on Friday, and from 10-6 Saturday and 12-6 Sunday;
  • Santa’s been making plenty of rounds in East Cobb, even with the snow, but there’s a special visit he’s got in store for pets Saturday at the Janice Overbeck Real Estate office (2249 Sewell Mill Road). Bring your furry family member(s) between 12-2 for free photos with St. Nick and refreshments;
  • One of your last chances to see a live Nativity Scene takes place from 7-9 tonight and Saturday at Wesley Chapel Road UMC (4495 Sandy Plains Road), and it’s a drive-through set up so you can stay in your car, and out of the cold;
  • Music is in the air all over East Cobb, led by the Cobb Wind Symphony Orchestra holiday concert at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Lassiter Concert Hall (2601 Shallowford Road). It’s free to get in but they’ll gladly accept donations;
  • The same Lassiter Concert Hall is the venue at 7:30 p.m. Sunday for the Pope High School Fine Arts Showcase, but you MUST purchase tickets in advance. They’re $10 each and can be ordered here; there will be NO sales as the door;
  • On Sunday at 6:30 p.m., East Cobb UMC (2325 Roswell Road) is having its musical celebration of the Christmas season. “Chosen” features the church’s children’s and adult choirs and orchestra. It’s free, and the 4 p.m. concert is sold out, with seating limited for 6:30 p.m.; get your online tickets here;
  • As Hanukkah comes to a close, the Chabad of Cobb congregation is once again holding a Coin Menorah event at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at East Cobb Park (3322 Roswell Road). Bring loose change and help what’s billed as the largest coin Menorah in the world; your contributions will benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta;
  • This isn’t on the holiday list of things to do, but is festive in its own way: The 47th annual Cobb County Invitational Wrestling Tournament takes place starting at 6 p.m. Friday and continues through Saturday afternoon at Lassiter High School (2601 Shallowford Road); it features all six East Cobb high schools, including Pope, the reigning county and state champion. Saturday’s slate starts at 8 a.m. and the championship round gets underway at 2:30 p.m.

East Cobb weekend events, Southern Invitational Music Festival
The Sprayberry Band of Gold once again is host of the Southern Invitational Music Festival, from 10-10 on Saturday at Jim Frazier Stadium.
