Fire Stone Chinese restaurant to open in East Cobb in early 2023

Fire Stone Chinese open East Cobb early 2023

A second location of Fire Stone Chinese Cuisine—which debuted to acclaim in the Town Center area in 2019—is set to open in East Cobb early 2023.

That’s the response we got after inquiring about the new restaurant’s timeline. Fire Stone will occupy the former Black Swan Tavern space—and for many years before that, Churchill’s Pub—at Merchants Festival (1401 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 128).

Last week Fire Stone received an alcohol pouring license from Cobb County government, but restaurant’s response didn’t provide any further details.

Yesterday a message was posted on its Facebook page that it is beginning to hire for the East Cobb location.

Fire Stone was started by Wen-Qiang Huang, a former associate of Peter Chang of Tasty China II fame, and specializes in Sichuan dishes (menu here).

The new Fire Stone space has been vacant since the Black Swan closed in February 2020. Another vacant restaurant space at Merchants Festival, formerly Jason’s Deli, still retains that restaurant’s outside signage.

The former Pier 1 store that also closed in 2020 at Merchants Festival is now occupied by Sea of Pearls Dentistry.

Johnson Ferry Baptist Church opens Provision Cafe to the public

Provision Cafe opens Johnson Ferry Baptist Church
Johnson Ferry Baptist Church senior pastor Rev. Clay Smith does the honors at the formal opening of Provision Cafe.

The dreary weather was ideal for what Provision Cafe was serving up to celebrate its ribbon-cutting on Tuesday.

Samplings of grilled cheese, tomato soup, hummus and warm pita bread and charcuterie items made their way around the new coffee shop and eatery at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church.

It’s an expanded version of a cafe that opened up two years ago, primarily for church members. The Cobb Chamber of Commerce also was on hand for the official ribbon-cutting, with Rev. Clay Smith, Johnson Ferry Baptist’s senior pastor, doing the honors.

With a full breakfast and lunch menu six days a week—as well as Sunday mornings—Provision Cafe is aimed at inviting the larger East Cobb community to enjoy coffee, food and informal gatherings with friends and family.

“We want to get outside our building,” Shane Bruce, the church’s executive director for operations. “Being a positive influence on this community is important.

“We want to help people find truth and belonging over a cup of coffee. But coffee is a lot more than a beverage. It’s something to have a conversation over.”

The cafe is located near the existing bookstore and includes booths, tall tables, and working pods with access to plugs to suit remote working needs. There is also a walking track on the second floor.

Breakfast items include egg bites and biscuits, oatmeal and waffles. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring panini sandwiches, chicken caprese, wraps, salads and kids’ items.

Bruce said the cafe has had a soft opening with members as the menu was tweaked and full operations ramped up.

After that, a variety of bakery and pastry items are available, along with coffee from Atlanta-based East Pole Coffee Co.

Other beverages include lattes, espresso, teas, smoothies and hot chocolate.

Hours at Provision Cafe are from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday; 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.

Johnson Ferry Baptist Church is located at 955 Johnson Ferry Baptist Church; Provision Cafe is located just inside the South Entrance, with access along Woodlawn Drive.

Cleaver and Cork opens in East Cobb; Roll On In closes

Cleaver and Cork opens East Cobb

The fourth location of the Cleaver and Cork butcher shop opened in late October in the Shops at Woodlawn (1062 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 162-D, next to Big Peach Running Company).

Cleaver and Cork describes itself as a family-owned artisanal butcher with a full line of premium meats as well as seafood, side dishes, cheese, produce, coffee, spices, charcuterie products and more.

The company is run by Chad and Audrey Stine, both former meat industry and sales representatives. They founded their first butcher shop in Sharpsburg, Ga., in 2018, then in nearby Newnan the next year. A store on Haynes Bridge Road in Alpharetta also recently opened.

Another high-end butcher shop, the NY Butcher Shoppe, is tentatively scheduled to open in December at The Avenue East Cobb, but a specific date hasn’t been announced.

Cleaver and Cork is open Tuesday-Friday from 10-6, Saturday 10-5 and is closed on Sunday. Phone: 678-402-6996.

A vacancy at Woodlawn Point

A reader got in touch to say she heard that the Roll On In Sushi and Burrito eatery (1100 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 365) had recently closed, and saw a hand-written note on the door indicating that when she stopped for a look.

We saw the same thing; inside the restaurant’s furniture and insignia were still there. The location’s social media accounts have been taken down, although it’s still listed on the company’s website.Roll On In closes East Cobb

Roll On In is an Ohio-based Asian-Tex-Mex casual fusion chain whose first location in Georgia was in East Cobb, in March 2020.

Suzanne and Monte Jump, a married couple with roots in the community, were the proprietors, after years of working in the corporate restaurant industry.

We’ve left a message with Roll On In’s corporate office for more information.

Started in 2016, Roll On In featured such dishes as wanton tacos, sushi donuts and dumplings.

It currently operates 14 restaurants in six states, including two others in Georgia. Earlier this year it closed its original restaurant in Lebanon, Ohio, where it now has a cafe inside a local YMCA.

Ted’s closing for the holidays

Ted’s Montana Grill has announced it will be closing for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at all of its locations, including Parkaire Landing (640 Johnson Ferry Road).

It’s the second year in a row the Atlanta-based steakhouse chain, which has 11 metro locations, has opted to close for the holidays so employees can spend time with their families.

“We recognize the importance of spending quality time with loved ones,” Ted’s CEO and Co-founder George McKerrow said in a statement. “The holidays are all about giving back and making memories with the people who matter the most.”

East Cobb restaurant update: Cherokee Chophouse, Chopt openings

Cherokee Chophouse

More than two years after the Cherokee Cattle Co. closed on Canton Road, its long-promised successor is set to open.

Cherokee Chophouse will serve its first meals Wednesday for dinner, according to the restaurant’s Facebook page on Sunday.

Updates on that account have been picking up in recent weeks as final permitting and licensing took place.

“It’s the final countdown!⏳Enjoy all the classic dishes and extraordinary new ones at the ALL NEW Cherokee Chophouse!” said another post on Sunday.

Cherokee Chophouse got an “A” score in a health inspection last week, and released a menu that emphasizes, as the new name implies, steaks and specialty meats.

Among them are “signature cuts” supplied exclusively to Cherokee Chophouse from “specific Midwestern ranches.”

Cherokee Chophouse is part of a restaurant group owned by Gus Tselios that includes the nearby Marietta Fish Market, the Marietta Diner and Yeero Village on Sandy Plains Road at Highway 92.

He closed Cherokee Cattle Co. at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, then said he would reopen under a new name and new menu after some remodeling, according to ToNeTo.

But the remodeling on an older building was extensive, according to that report, and it looks very different from its predecessor.

Cherokee Chophouse (2710 Canton Road) will be open from 4-9 p.m. daily and is accepting reservations via OpenTable.

Chopt Gives Charity precedes opening

We’ve reported previously that the salad concept chain Chopt is set to open on Wednesday in the former California Pizza Kitchen space in Pine Straw Plaza (4250 Roswell Road, Suite 630).

On Tuesday, it will hold a Chopt Gives Charity event that will benefit HOPE Atlanta, its designated charity, wich helps people challenged by food and housing insecurity.

The restaurant will donate 100 percent of the proceeds during designated times on Tuesday.

Patrons can dine in in from 11:30 a.m.—2 p.m. or 5—7:30 p.m. or by ordering online or via the Chopt mobile app.

Chopt’s normal business hours will be Monday-Saturday from 10:30 a.m.—9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.—8 p.m.

East Cobb Biz Update: Marshalls, Chopt announce opening dates

Marshalls East Cobb opening date

Our inbox was hopping this morning with early November opening dates announced for the East Cobb locations of Marshalls and Chopt.

The former will be opening to the public on Thursday, Nov. 3, according to a release sent by the Massachusetts-based off-price retailer.

Marshalls is taking up some of the space formerly occupied by Stein Mart at Merchant’s Walk (1311 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 424). It’s a relocation of the Marshalls at East Lake (2203 Roswell Road) and will contain 24,727 square feet.

The store hours will be as follows:

  • 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday
  • 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays

“Our newest store in Marietta will offer an ever-changing selection of high-quality, on-trend, and brand-name merchandise at the amazing prices that Marshalls is known for. We’re excited to bring this experience and exceptional values from fashion and beauty to home and more to a new neighborhood,” Marshalls president Tim Miner said in the release. “With thousands of new items delivered to our stores every day, we strive to provide our shoppers with amazing brands every time they shop.”

A store closing announcement isn’t posted outside the East Lake Marshalls, which remains open for the time being, but there’s a storewide clearance sale sign at the entrance.

Just across Johnson Ferry at Pine Straw Plaza, finishing touches are being put on Chopt, a salad concept eatery which we noted last month is being renovated completely in the former space of California Pizza Kitchen.

Chopt sent word today that the first day of business at the new East Cobb location (4250 Roswell Road, Suite 630) will be Wednesday, Nov. 9.

It’s one of two Chopt openings in metro Atlanta—another is in Peachtree Corners next week—making it six in the area.

Chopt offers a variety of salad options with more than 18 “shockingly delicious dressings,” according to a company release, as well as wraps and sandwiches.

The East Cobb location includes 2,513 square feet, indoor seating for 46, a patio for 30, as well as curbside pickup and self-serve kiosks.

The day before an opening Chopt designates a community non-profit to receive 100 percent of proceeds for what it calls a “day of giving.” The East Cobb and Peachtree Corners locations are partnering with HOPE Atlanta, which helps people challenged by food and housing insecurity.

Patrons can contribute on Tuesday, Nov. 8 by dining in from 11:30 a.m.—2 p.m. or 5—7:30 p.m. or by ordering online or via the Chopt mobile app.

Chopt’s normal business hours will be Monday-Saturday from 10:30 a.m.—9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.—8 p.m.

Crumbl Cookies to open second East Cobb location at Parkaire

Crumbl Cookies to open Parkaire Landing

A second East Cobb location of Crumbl Cookies will be opening soon in the Parkaire Landing Shopping Center.

The Utah-based chain, which opened its first shop in 2017, will be moving into the former Cold Stone Creamery space at 640 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 110, next to Ted’s Montana Grill.

Cold Stone Creamery’s signage disappeared last week, and although Parkaire Landing hasn’t removed the store from its directory the store’s website said it’s “temporarily closed.”

A response from Crumbl to an inquiry from East Cobb News said that “this store is still in the early stages. . . we are at the very beginning and months away from opening. . . permits, buildout and staffing still ahead.”

Crumbl Cookies makes fresh-baked cookies on premises, allowing customers to watch. After starting with a single product—chocolate chip cookies—Crumbl has grown its product line to include a rotating menu, and with ubiquitous pink carry-out and curbside pickup boxes.

Aggressive social media campaigns, especially on TikTok, also have helped Crumbl Cookies’ rapid expansion to nearly 600 locations nationwide.

Locally, Crumbl Cookies has opened at Sandy Plains MarketPlace, as well as Kennesaw and Marietta.

East Cobb News also has left a message with Cold Stone Creamery.

As Moxie Burger restaurants expand, Moxie Taco is sold

Moxie Taco restaurant sold

The Moxie Restaurant Group opened its fourth Moxie Burger location last month in the Kennesaw area.

On Tuesday, the East Cobb-based company announced it has sold its Moxie Taco restaurant at Paper Mill Village.

In a Facebook message Tuesday morning, the Moxie Restaurant Group said that the new owners are those who operate Camps Kitchen and Bar next door.

The new name of the restaurant will be the Green Coyote Cantina, and it will have a similar menu.

“We’ve truly loved building Moxie Taco into a favorite neighborhood restaurant within the East Cobb community and are so thankful for everyone who supported Moxie Taco with their visits, parties, and catering,” the Moxie Restaurant Group message said. “We ultimately made the difficult decision to sell, so that we can focus our efforts on putting Moxie Burger locations into more local community neighborhoods.

“The decision was made easier by knowing it will be handed over to seasoned, successful owners, who are passionate about the concept,” the Moxie message said. “We know our loyal MT customers will be in the best of hands.”

Robert Caswick, a co-owner of Camps, told East Cobb News that his ownership team, the MooCoo Group, took over operations of Moxie Taco last week and has begun a gradual transition to the Green Coyote Cantina.

The restaurant is open from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily, and Caswick said hours will expand “once we are staffed up.”

He said the menu (see below) will feature scratch Tex-Mex entrees and specialty margaritas.

“We’re smoking meats in-house and have a margarita menu like no one else” he said. “We love East Cobb and are excited to serve the community we’ve met through Camp’s Kitchen & Bar.”

He said the interior of the Green Coyote will be updated gradually over the coming months during off-hours to make it resemble “a Far West Texas cantina.”

There also will be an expansion of the back patio overlooking the Paper Mill pond.

Moxie Taco opened in 2017 as La Novia Taqueria, then changed the name to reflect the Moxie brand.

Moxie Burger was started by Pope High School graduate Chas D’Huyvetter, who opened his first gourmet hamburger restaurant at Paper Mill Village in 2011.

The newest Moxie Burger is located at 1600 Kennesaw Due West Road, joining other locations on Shallowford Road near Lassiter High School and in Roswell.

The Moxie Restaurant Group message Tuesday said that there are “more to follow soon.”

East Cobb News has left a message with Moxie Burger.

Kyle Wright of Braves to appear at East Cobb Flying Biscuit

The Atlanta Braves are playing host to the New York Mets at Truist Park this weekend in a big series that likely will determine the winner of the National League Eastern Division.Kyle Wright, East Cobb Flying Biscuit

The Flying Biscuit Cafe in East Cobb is marking a big slate of events in October during its grand reopening, and has snagged one of the team’s stars to make an appearance this Sunday.

Pitcher Kyle Wright, the only player in Major League Baseball with 20 wins this season, will sign autographs and meet with fans Sunday starting at 10 a.m. at Flying Biscuit, located at Parkaire Landing Shopping Center (4880 Lower Roswell Road, Suite 70).

Wright won his 21st game Saturday as the Braves defeated the Mets 4-1 to take a one-game lead with four games remaining for each team in the regular season.

The Braves and Mets will play Sunday night at 7 p.m. in a nationally televised game on ESPN.

Flying Biscuit opened at Parkaire Landing in March 2021 but closed in August for a month to undergo training following an ownership and management change.

The restaurant kicks off a month of specials this week that include $1 and $5 meals. Gift giveaways are scheduled for next week, and the promotions are updated on its Facebook page.
