East Cobb biz updates: East Lake Starbucks; Chick-Fil-A Lassiter

East Lake Starbucks opens

Over the weekend we saw the finishing touches being put on a new standalone Starbucks at the East Lake Shopping Center (2135 Roswell Road).

A reader sent us word on Sunday that it’s now open. The hours are 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday-Saturday.

This is the ninth Starbucks in the East Cobb area, and it’s right across the street from a smaller Starbucks inside the Kroger at the Pavilions at East Lake, and a mile or so from another Starbucks at Roswell and East Piedmont.

The new East Lake location was built on the site of a former bank, and is near the Los Bravos Mexican restaurant.

There’s a drive-through and indoor seating, as well as mobile app ordering and Wi-Fi.

Another standalone Starbucks is in the works at Paper Mill Village, with a delayed rezoning case requesting demolition of the existing small coffee shop for a 5,000-square-foot, two-story building.

That first hearing is tentatively scheduled for April 3 before the Cobb Planning Commission.

Back in service

What was supposed to be a short closure in February to expand drive-through service turned into be a longer hiatus for the Chick-Fil-A Lassiter (3046 Shallowford Road).

Store management announced on Friday that it’s reopened at its usual hours, after “a few unforeseen delays.”

The store had scheduled a Daddy Daughter Date Night but due to the closure that’s been rescheduled for March 25.

East Cobb restaurant update: AJ’s Seafood and PoBoys closes

One of East Cobb’s longest-lasting Cajun-style restaurants has closed its doors.

AJ’s Famous Seafood and PoBoys (2100 Roswell Road, Suite 2148, in the Pavilions at East Lake) is listed as permanently closed on its Facebook page.

When we went by, we saw that tables and chairs had been removed and kitchen equipment was being cleared out of the 2,800 square feet of space next to Kroger.

Brixmor, the retail center’s leasing agent, has listed that space as being available. The restaurant’s website also has expired.

There wasn’t a sign on the doors announcing a closure, but like many restaurants during the COVID-19 pandemic, AJ’s struggled with labor shortages and announced a number of short-notice closures.

East Cobb News has left a message with AJ’s seeking comment.

The restaurant—which specialized in Louisiana-style dishes like muffaletta sandwiches and fried alligator tacos—also was trying to reobtain an alcohol license.

AJ’s got an “A” score of 91 during a health inspection just last week.

Andy Erbacher opened AJ’s at the Pavilions 18 years ago as a neighborhood-style establishment, featuring seafood from the Gulf coast.

Shortly before COVID, AJ’s expanded with an oyster bar that took up space formerly occupied by a hair salon. The oyster bar closed early in the pandemic.

In 2021, Erlacher was outspoken about the Major League All-Star game being moved from nearby Truist Park due a Georgia election law, appearing on a live Fox News segment.

“We made it through COVID,” he said. “We were looking forward to things starting to get back to somewhat normal” in anticipating good business for the three-day All-Star event.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp also visited AJ’s in the wake of that decision, critical of the boycott and its impact on the local economy.

Further down at the Pavilions, a new seafood restaurant will be opening soon—Captain Charlie’s Seafood & More—located next to the J. Christopher’s.

The Avenue East Cobb announces new restaurants, shops

Two new restaurants are coming to The Avenue East Cobb as part of a series of new lease signings as the retail center continues redevelopment.

North American Properties announced Thursday that Press Waffle Co., an eatery chain featuring Belgian Liége waffles, will occupy space this fall in one of two new “jewel box” buildings featuring restaurants and retail shops.

The Press Waffle Co., which began as a food truck venture in St. Louis in 2016 and vaulted into famed via the television show “Shark Tank,” has seven locations in Missouri, Arkansas, Texas and Colorado.

The 1,200-square-foot space will be located near Sephora, according to an NAP release.

The East Cobb franchisees will be Keith and Niki Ginel, a married couple who “envision a French café ambience for customers to soak up while indulging in a selection of savory and sweet dishes like The House, a bestseller featuring strawberries, cookie butter, Nutella, and a house made whipped cream atop a golden Liége waffle,” NAP said (menu items here).

The other restaurant is Peach State Pizza, which is debuting at The Avenue under the brother partnership of David and Michael Cohen, occupying the former space of Stockyard Burgers and Bones.

The Cohens are pizza industry veterans, and the new concept focuses on “Southern-style pizza with an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients,” NAP said.

The menu will include appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and desserts, as well as locally brewed beer, domestics and specialty cocktails.

The space will include 3,650 square feet with décor “reflect[ing] the warmth of a Southern farmhouse and the relaxation of a front porch swing, punctuated by vintage photos, signs and artwork of classic Georgia landmarks.

Peach State Pizza will have two outdoor patios that will have events such as cornhole competitions and live music.

Construction is set to begin in the spring and is expected to open in the late summer, NAP said.

Lauren Ness, a spokeswoman for NAP, told East Cobb News that the New York Butcher Shoppe (previous ECN post here) is opening on Saturday, next to the J. Jill store.

To mark the opening, the store is also launching a “Name the Steer” contest through Feb. 28, with the winner receiving two Angus steaks.

On the retail front, in addition to the Barnes and Noble opening we posted recently, The Avenue also will be welcoming Faced The Facial Studio, an Atlanta-base skincare studio with locations in Buckhead, Morningside and Westside. The 2,100-square-foot space will be next to Warby Parker.

And Evereve, a women’s fashion retailer, will be opening later this year in its third Georgia location.

Chick-Fil-A Lassiter closed two weeks for drive-thru upgrade

Chick-Fil-A Lassiter drive-thru upgrade

A busy Chick-Fil-A location in East Cobb is closed this week and next for expansion of its drive-thru service.

Brian Baldwin, the operations manager for the Chick-Fil-A Lassiter (3046 Shallowford Road), said in a video release over the weekend that “we are committed to improving your drive-thru experience.”

He didn’t specify what the renovations would entail, but management reassured a customer that they wouldn’t be getting rid of the play area for kids.

The closest Chick-Fil-A in that area is across from Sprayberry High School at 2530 Sandy Plains Road.

Chick-Fil-A locations in the East Cobb area have expanded recently to include a double drive-thru at some locations, with one dedicated for customers who order ahead.

The Chick-Fil-A at Woodlawn Square on Johnson Ferry Road was closed for several months in 2018-19 due to significant renovations that included reconfiguring its drive-thru access.

Retail Planning Corp., which manages the retail center, has applied to expand to a double pick-up lane and needs county approval to relate a Delta Community Credit Union ATM in order to do that. That case goes before Cobb commissioners on Feb. 21.

Taste of East Cobb announces 2023 date, accepting applications

Taste of East Cobb returns

The Taste of East Cobb will be back at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church May 6 for its annual food festival to benefit the Walton High School band programs.

The event (basic info here), sponsored by the Walton Band Parent Association, lasts from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the South parking lot of the church (955 Johnson Ferry Road) rain or shine.

In addition to food samplings from local restaurants and eateries, the Taste of East Cobb includes live jazz music—from the Walton band students, of course—a kids’ fun zone, sand art and face painting, products and services from other local businesses and vendors, a silent auction and the “Best of Taste of East Cobb” voting competition.

(Last year’s food winners included Smallcakes at The Avenue East Cobb and McCray’s Tavern at Parkaire Landing.)

Event admission is free and food tickets cost $1 each.

The Taste of East Cobb is accepting applications for restaurants, vendors and sponsors, with the latter ranging between $750 and $5,000.

Righteous Que granted beer and wine license after appeal

Righteous Que granted alcohol license

As we have noted before (including last week with the forthcoming Westfield Tavern), restaurants and bars in Cobb have to take a few extra steps to get an alcohol pouring license if they come up against distance requirements in the county ordinance.

The Righteous Que barbecue restaurant at the Piedmont Commons Shopping Center has been open since 2012, and in December applied for a beer and wine license (it’s closed on Sundays).

As usual, the Cobb Business License Division denied the application, because the restaurant at 1050 E. Piedmont Road is less than 300 feet from a residence and less than 600 feet from the McCleskey Family-East Cobb YMCA, which is considered a park and subject to that distance requirement.

If an applicant appeals, that is heard by the Board of License Review, which is an appointed body that typically issues a reversal unless there is opposition or other circumstances.

There wasn’t opposition to the Righteous Que liquor license, and during the Jan. 5 appeal hearing the restaurant’s attorney said the plans are to serve beer and wine only, with customers taking their drinks to their tables after ordering, and that there will not be a bar.

Righteous Que’s opening hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday. The attorney said that employees are being trained to check identification of customers at the time of beer and wine purchases, and that 90 percent of the business is expected to come from food sales.

“Additionally, the premises has been licensed in the past and granting a license now will not adversely affect on the residents or YMCA,” the restaurant stated as part of the appeal.”

Righteous Que moved into space that previously had been a Mexican restaurant and said that employees found to have violated the underage sales ordinance will be immediately terminated.

The review board reversed the denial 5-0, with the final say going to the Cobb Board of Commissioners, who approved the reversal Tuesday on their consent agenda.

Westfield Tavern opening soon in former East Cobb Tavern space

Westfield Tavern opening East Cobb

Those behind the forthcoming Westfield Tavern at the Shallowford Corners Shopping Center say they’re getting closer to opening, and they got a big boost in the process last week.

Cobb commissioners approved on a consent agenda an item to grant a beer, wine, liquor and Sunday pouring license to Westfield Tavern, which is set to occupy the former East Cobb Tavern and Keegan’s Public House space.

Managing partner Erik Tierney told East Cobb News Monday that he’s hoping to open the doors in a couple of weeks, but couldn’t say exactly when.

He’s still hiring a staff and “waiting on a few other things” regarding licensing and permitting from Cobb County.

A veteran of the Atlanta pub and community tavern scene, Tierney said Westfield Tavern will be a “family-friendly community tavern” much like his Whitehall Tavern, which opened in Buckhead at the Peachtree Battle Shopping Center near Piedmont Hospital in 2011.

His restaurant group also includes the Creatwood Tavern in Smyrna, which features a rooftop patio.

While there’s a sports bar-type atmosphere, Tierney said he wants Westfield Tavern to exude a real community feel—it’s named after an adjacent subdivision on Shallowford Road—and will include an area for kids’ games.

The business also plans to get involved as a sponsor and partner in community activities, especially those involving youth and in the Pope, Lassiter and other school communities.

In doing the market research, Tierney said the demographics are very similar to Whitehall Tavern—40 and over and those raising children.

“It works very well down there,” he said in reference of the Buckhead location’s concept, “and I think it’s replicable here.”

The Westfield Tavern menu, he said, will also reflect those similarities (here’s Whitehall’s), including a number of kids’ items.

While Westfield will be located in the heart of the “JOSH” area soon to welcome East Cobb Church and new residential development, Tierney said its proximity to Roswell also is ideal.

“We’re trying to create this as a destination,” he said.

East Cobb Tavern opened in Jan. 2020, but closed soon after due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It briefly reopened then shut again in early 2021 in an attempt to find new ownership.

But that didn’t materialize, and the premises were vacant until last fall, when plans for the Westfield Tavern got underway.

Westfield Tavern was initially denied an alcohol license due to distance requirements under Cobb ordinances, but the Cobb License Review Board reversed that decision, which was upheld by Cobb commissioners last week.

That’s a standard pattern for many restaurants and bars in Cobb (as we noted in March 2021 about the Flying Biscuit Cafe opening).

Westfield Tavern’s opening hours will be Sunday-Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. and Friday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. The address is 4401 Shallowford Road Suite 13.

Tierney, who hails from Ireland and previously was a manager of the now-closed Ri Ra Tavern in Midtown Atlanta as well as Meehan’s Public House in Atlantic Station, said that while Westfield Tavern won’t be following as a true Irish pub, “we’ll still have Guinness on tap,” he said.
