The holiday shopping season has just begun, but the Good Mews Holiday Decor Market is ending this weekend, with all proceeds to benefit the non-profit cat shelter in East Cobb.
Everything is marked down 50 percent and the hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 12-5 on Sunday. The market is located at 1860 Sandy Plains Road, Suite 202 (in the Sandy Plains Exchange Shopping Center).

The Mt. Zion UMC Craft Show is back for its 34th year (ECN file).
The weekend before Veterans Day is always filled with a wide variety of events, and in East Cobb there’s quite a bit to choose from in our calendar listings, indoors and outside.
Already underway, and continuing through Friday, is the 34th annual Mt. Zion UMC Holly Jolly Craft Show. Shop early for the holidays, enjoy breakfast, lunch and baked goods, have a shot at winning raffle and door prizes, as well as a silent auction and quilt drawing. The proceeds benefit the United Methodist Women’s children’s and women’s charities. The sale goes until 5 p.m. Friday, and from 9-4 Saturday (1770 Johnson Ferry Road).
The high school football regular season ends Friday, with several East Cobb schools either trying to solidify playoff spots or clinch a post-season berth. Walton can win Region 4AAAAAAA at home against Woodstock. Sprayberry will play host to River Ridge for a possible playoff shot, and so will Wheeler, which visits Pebblebrook. Kell, which is playoff-bound, visits Woodland in Cartersville. Lassiter’s one just once this year but will try to double its win total as the Trojans close out their season at home against Cherokee. All kickoffs are at 7:30 p.m.
Very early on Saturday morning is the 9th annual Free Dental Day at Mansouri Family Dental Care (4720 Lower Roswell Road). They’ll be providing free dental cleanings, fillings and extractions on a first-come, first-served basis, and you’ve got to be at least 18 years old. More than 100 patients are expected, and some arrive Friday overnight. Tickets will be given out starting at 5 a.m., and parking is at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church (955 Johnson Ferry Road).
More holiday shopping continues this weekend at the Good Mews Holiday Decor Market, which is open from 10-5 Saturday and 12-5 Sunday. (1860 Sandy Plains Road, Suite 202).
Friday and Saturday, The Art Place is staging “Piece of My Heart,” which portrays the stories of six women who served as nurses in the Vietnam War and how they were affected by the experience.
The performances will be at 7:30 p.m, on Friday and Saturday, and the suggested donation of $10 (3330 Sandy Plains Road).
As it gets dark on Saturday, step out and get some exercise to help out a high school band. It’s the Dead Band Running 5K, a Day of the Dead-themed glow race to support the Pope High School Band. The race takes place at the school (3001 Hembree Road) from 5-7, and you’ll start off to the beat of the band’s drumline. Another East Cobb Veterans Day weekend tradition continues Sunday. It’s the Cobb Wind Symphony Veterans Day Concert, which starts at 3 at the Lassiter Concert Hall (2601 Shallowford Road). Admission is free.

This weekend’s events calendar in East Cobb contains more fall-like and holiday-themed events, as well as the last presentation of the year for a community theater troupe.
The first holiday craft fair of the fall is the St. Andrew UMC Craft Show, 11-6 Friday and 10-4 Saturday at the church (3455 Canton Road). There’s free admission, and you can shop for items from over 40 vendors. Lunch items and baked goods for sale. All proceeds go to St. Andrew’s women’s mission work projects;
The Cobb Library System’s Fall Book Sale (above) is all this weekend, 9-5 Friday and Saturday and 1-5 Sunday, at the Cobb Civic Center (548 S. Marietta Parkway). Debit, credit, cash and checks will be accepted. Your buying limit will be two boxes of items at a time on Friday until 1 p.m. Sunday is BYOB (Bring Your Own Box) Day. You can bring any size box you like and fill it to the top. Profits go to help the library system purchase items for branches around the county;
It’s the halfway point in the high school football season, and all six East Cobb teams are in action Friday, headlined by Walton at Lassiter. It’s been a while since both teams had losing records for this showdown, but the Raiders are 2-3 and the Trojans are 1-4. This is a region game, so more than local bragging rights are on the line. It’s homecoming for Pope against Johns Creek, while Sprayberry is at Osborne, Kell travels to Villa Rica and Wheeler visits Newnan. Kickoff at all venues is 7:30 p.m.;
The final production of the year for CenterStage North continues this weekend and next at The Art Place (3330 Sandy Plains Road): “Point of Order,” about how a small town in decline goes out of its way to honor a long-departed hometown celebrity to spark a revival. Shows are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m., as well as next Thursday-Saturday, also at 8. Tickets are $20;
Starting Saturday, and continuing weekends only through Dec. 1 and longer hours afterward, is the Good Mews Holiday Decor Market. The location is the same, the Sandy Plains Exchange Shopping Center (1860 Sandy Plains Road, Suite 202), and for now Saturday hours are 10-5 and Sunday hours are 12-5. The East Cobb-based cat shelter is accepting donations of holiday decor and collectibles for all major holidays on site Saturdays 10-3 and Sundays 12-3 through Nov. 17. Ensure that all items are clean, new or gently used, and in good working order;
From 10-2 Saturday, it’s the Mt. Bethel Christian Preschool Fall Festival, taking place in the Fairfield parking lot at the church (4385 Lower Roswell Road). Events will include touch a truck, pony rides, a petting zoo, inflatables, games, balloon art, food and much, much more! Exciting silent auction items and baskets will be available. Admission is $1 per ticket or 11 tickets for $10.

The holiday season is here, and on the first weekend there couldn’t be a more festive way to get it started than with a community rendition of “The Nutcracker.”
The Georgia Metropolitan Dance Theatre is staging the event Thursday through Sunday at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre at the Cobb Civic Center (548 S. Marietta Parkway). The show times are as follows:
Friday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 24 at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 25th at 2 p.m.
As we noted earlier, more than 150 local dancers have been selected and have been getting ready the Georgia Dance Conservatory on the Marietta Square. Tickets are $10 to $30. For information visit: www.georgiametrodance.tix.com.
On Saturday, Small Business Saturday is being observed around the country, including in East Cobb, and it’s a good way to keep your holiday shopping dollars local, which in turn helps strengthen the community. Some businesses are extending their sales throughout the weekend and beyond.
School’s been out this week, but if your child needs some extra tutoring as the Thanksgiving weekend break comes to an end, stop by the East Cobb Library (4880 Lower Roswell Road) on Saturday between 2:30-4:30 p.m. for free 30-minute tutoring lessons.
The library is partnering with mentors from Walton, Wheeler and The Westminster Schools for students K-8 in math, science and reading. While registration is required, there may be walk-up space available by calling 770-509-2730.

Early holiday shoppers will have more opportunities to beat the crowds, discover the best finds and help out local charitable efforts with an array of holiday markets leading off upcoming East Cobb Weekend Events.
The Good Mews Holiday Decor Market has been underway for a couple of weeks now and continues every weekend until mid-December at the Sandy Plains Exchange shopping center (1860 Sandy Plains Road at Scufflegrit). Hours are 10-5 Saturday and 12-5 Sunday and all proceeds go to shelter operations;
The Mt. Zion United Methodist Women Craft Show returns (photo above from last year) from 9-5 Friday and 9-4 Saturday at the church (1770 Johnson Ferry Road). It’s the 32nd year for the event, which will have items from more than 100 vendors, door prizes, a bake sale, a quilt drawing and Santa pictures. Proceeds go to UMW programs.
On Saturday, the Ribbons and Holiday Handcrafted Market takes place at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church (4385 Lower Roswell Road), with goods from more than 50 vendors, face painting for kids, food and more. Mt. Bethel’s mission projects are the beneficiary.
Well before dawn on Saturday many will be lining up for Free Dental Day at Mansouri Family Dental Care (4720 Lower Roswell Road). It’s the 8th year for the first-come, first-serve service, which provides free cleanings, extractions and fillings for those who can’t afford them. Treatment numbers will be given out starting at 5:30 a.m.
Friday Night Lights have been extended for three East Cobb high school football teams that have qualified for the Georgia High School Association playoffs. Two are playing at home: Camden County is at Walton, while Carver of Atlanta visits Kell. Pope will be playing at Creekview in Canton. Kickoff times are all at 7:30 p.m.
On Sunday, the East Cobb-based Play Me Again Pianos non-profit is having a family-friendly fundraiser from 5-7 p.m. at Red Sky Tapas and Bar (1255 Johnson Ferry Road), as it continues to provide refurbished pianos to communities across metro Atlanta. Two are located at East Cobb Park and Egg Harbor Cafe, and another will be presented soon at the Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center.
Monday is Veteran’s Day, and there are plenty of events slated around the county to mark the 100th anniversary of the armistice ending the First World War. The closest to East Cobb is the Marietta Veterans Day Parade that will be held on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. at Roswell Street Baptist Church (774 Roswell Street) and traveling to the Marietta Square, where speakers and commemorations will take place. The parade is in its 14th year, and is put on by the City of Marietta and the Marietta Kiwanis Club.

Today’s the first day of fall, and it’s starting to feel a little bit like it. Many East Cobb organizations have already begun autumn- and holiday-themed events, and they’re continuing this weekend.
The Good Mews Holiday Decor Market gets under way Friday and continues every weekend through early December, returning to the Sandy Plains Exchange Shopping Center (1860 Sandy Plains Road, Suite 202). They’re open this Friday and the last Friday of the sale, on Dec. 7, from 12-5; otherwise the hours are Saturdays 10-5 and Sundays 12-5. The kitties like the one above who are the beneficiaries of the sale won’t be onsite, but you can get an early start on gently used goods for holiday shopping. Good Mews also is accepting your donations starting Friday and through Nov. 25;
Church fall festivals are starting to gear up too, and coming up is the Eastminster Presbyterian Church Fall Festival from 12-8 Friday and from 10-4 Saturday at the church (3125 Sewell Mill Road). Games, crafts, kids activities and BBQ are on tap, and the proceeds benefit several local charities, including MUST Ministries;
If you want to get out and stretch your legs while soaking up the beautiful weather and tap into the holidays, Halloween Hikes at the Chattahoochee Nature Center (9135 Willeo Road, Roswell) is an ideal event for the whole family. They’re guided half-mile walks along lighted trails and with crafts and other Halloween decorations. The times Friday and Saturday are from 7-9:45 p.m., and the cost is $12 a person;
The high school football season is drawing to a close, with several East Cobb teams still vying for playoff position. Friday’s games kick off at 7:30 p.m, and they include Cass at Kell, Woodstock at Lassiter, Sequoyah at Sprayberry, Roswell at Walton, Campbell at Wheeler and Pope at Cambridge.
By the way, that Walton-Roswell game is going to be shown live from Raider Valley on Georgia Public Television, as the No. 2 Raiders look to stay unbeaten on the season and in region play.
If high school band music is your thing, you’ve got all day Saturday to take in the 35th Southern Invitational Music Festival, which goes from 10-10 at Sprayberry High School (2525 Sandy Plains Road). Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for students with an ID and free for kids 6 and under.

The Christmas tree at East Cobb Park will be joined on Sunday by Chabad of Cobb’s coin Menorah in an event that benefits Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
The last weekend of holiday activities before Christmas is busier than usual since some were rescheduled due to the winter storm, and that’s where we’ll lead off in noting East Cobb weekend events over the next few days:
The Empty Bowl Brunch at The Art Place-Mountain View (3330) Sandy Plains Road) was to have taken place last Sunday, but it’s just been moved a week, and at the same time this coming Sunday 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. as the original schedule. The cost is also the same; a $15 ticket gets you a handmade soup bowl to fill as often as you like, with the proceeds benefitting MUST Ministries;
Another delayed event is the final local holiday market of the season. The St. Nicholas Holiday Market goes from 12-4 on Sunday at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church (3431 Trickum Road), with gift items, crafts, jewelry and Greek food goodies;
Also in its final weekend is the Good Mews Holiday Decor Market (1860 Sandy Plains Road), which is open until 6 on Friday, and from 10-6 Saturday and 12-6 Sunday;
Santa’s been making plenty of rounds in East Cobb, even with the snow, but there’s a special visit he’s got in store for pets Saturday at the Janice Overbeck Real Estateoffice (2249 Sewell Mill Road). Bring your furry family member(s) between 12-2 for free photos with St. Nick and refreshments;
One of your last chances to see a live Nativity Scene takes place from 7-9 tonight and Saturday at Wesley Chapel Road UMC (4495 Sandy Plains Road), and it’s a drive-through set up so you can stay in your car, and out of the cold;
Music is in the air all over East Cobb, led by the Cobb Wind Symphony Orchestra holiday concert at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Lassiter Concert Hall (2601 Shallowford Road). It’s free to get in but they’ll gladly accept donations;
The same Lassiter Concert Hall is the venue at 7:30 p.m. Sunday for the Pope High School Fine Arts Showcase, but you MUST purchase tickets in advance. They’re $10 each and can be ordered here; there will be NO sales as the door;
On Sunday at 6:30 p.m., East Cobb UMC (2325 Roswell Road) is having its musical celebration of the Christmas season. “Chosen” features the church’s children’s and adult choirs and orchestra. It’s free, and the 4 p.m. concert is sold out, with seating limited for 6:30 p.m.; get your online tickets here;
As Hanukkah comes to a close, the Chabad of Cobb congregation is once again holding a Coin Menorah event at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at East Cobb Park (3322 Roswell Road). Bring loose change and help what’s billed as the largest coin Menorah in the world; your contributions will benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta;
This isn’t on the holiday list of things to do, but is festive in its own way: The 47th annual Cobb County Invitational Wrestling Tournament takes place starting at 6 p.m. Friday and continues through Saturday afternoon at Lassiter High School (2601 Shallowford Road); it features all six East Cobb high schools, including Pope, the reigning county and state champion. Saturday’s slate starts at 8 a.m. and the championship round gets underway at 2:30 p.m.

Don’t need much of a drumroll introduction for what’s coming up over the next few days. The East Cobb Halloween events calendar is absolutely loaded (and if we’ve missed your event there’s still time to let us know. E-mail calendar@eastcobbnews.com and we’ll post it!). So many trunk or treat events, assorted fall festivals and a new spooky event that may become a bonafide tradition: The Pope Dead Band Running 5K. Pope also has a Haunted Theater presentation of “The Dollhouse” to ramp up a frightening selection of Halloween-themed events
Trunk or Treats galore: Kicking off Friday at 6 at Addison ES, and including similar events for kids at St. Catherine’s Episcopal on Saturday, Wesley Chapel UMC on Sunday and on Halloween itself, at Powers Ferry UMC;
Run for Your Haunted Lives: A 5K run at night? In the spirit of Halloween, that’s what the Pope High School Marching Band has put together from 7-9 Saturday at the Mountain View Aquatic Center (2650 Gordy Parkway): The Pope Dead Band Running 5K, and you can show up in a costume or regular running attire. The proceeds raise funds for the band, which says it needs to replace Bessie, its aging equipment truck. Race-day registration begins at 6 p.m.;
Terrifying dollies: The Pope Haunted Theater gets into the spirit of Halloween with presentations of “The Dollhouse” Saturday and Sunday at $6, after two previous shows this week;
Get Your Pumpkin Carving On: Once you get your pumpkin, bring it on by the Mountain View Regional Library (3320 Sandy Plains Road) from 2-3 on Saturday for a carving event. It’s ideally for kids K-5 to enjoy, but you can come by even if you’re older;
Shopping for the kitties: With Halloween near, it also means it’s time for the Good Mews Holiday Décor Market, which starts Saturday at the Sandy Plains Exchange Shopping Center (1860 Sandy Plains Road, at Scufflegrit Road). The hours are 10-6 Saturdays and 12-6 Sundays, and the sale continues through Dec. 17. The proceeds benefit the Good Mews programs to care and place homeless cats for adoption, and they’re taking gently-used items on-site on Saturday until 3 p.m.;
All the way to state: The high school football season is winding down, with only two games left. Walton has already clinched a state playoff berth, and Lassiter and Kell have the best chances of joining them. But the biggest high school sporting events this weekend involve the young ladies of East Cobb. On Saturday, Walton attempts a three-peat in the Class 7A state volleyball finals against Etowah (6 p.m., Marietta High School, 1171 Whitlock Ave.). In Columbus, the Pope softball team is competing in the Class 6A softball finals, which got underway Thursday. We’ll be posting updates on these events as we get the results, so keep checking back for the latest scores;
Piedmont Church Fall Festival: Sunday will be an all-day and all-night of activities at the Piedmont Church (570 Piedmont Road). Sunday morning services will be followed by a family fall festival from 6-8, including pumpkin painting, a petting zoo and food. The event is free and open to the public.
