The rain stayed away for a Halloween carnival for all ages Saturday afternoon at The Avenue East Cobb.

The “Boo Bash” was certainly aimed at kids—with plenty of trick-or-treat goodies and a “Mega Awesome Costume Party” courtesy of East Cobb Church—but plenty of grown-ups and even a few pets came decked out for the festivities.

They included a bouncy house, balloon art and goods from local shops and vendors.

The costume contest included music, prizes for costume categories, an illusionist and a hopeful message for the holiday season to come.

Parents and kids also lined up to take a trip around the retail center in The Avenue Express, which also proved to be very popular.

Scene in East Cobb: Getting into the swing of Halloween

A makeshift “photo booth” was set up at the Sewell Mill Baptist Church Saturday for a pumpkin patch and fall produce sale held by Holland Botanical (previous story here).

Visitors could get their pictures taken (many were taking snaps of their kids sitting on the bales of hay) as they shopped for fresh fruits and vegetables.

Some of the proceeds benefitted the church’s Richards Christian Academy, including raffle tickets sold for the large 75-pound pumpkin in the front.

On Sunday Holland Botanical will be taking its produce and pumpkin patch setup to the Sukkahfest at Congregation Etz Chaim (1190 Indian Hills Parkway), from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

UPDATE: The Avenue East Cobb postpones ‘Boo Bash’ to Sunday

The Avenue East Cobb Boo Bash

We posted last week about The Avenue East Cobb’s Halloween festival, called the “Boo Bash,” that was set to take place on Saturday.

Due to the wet weather, those events are being pushed back to Sunday, including trick-or-treating and a Mega Awesome Costume contest conducted by East Cobb Church.

The Boo Bash is now slated for 1-3 p.m. Sunday at The Avenue (4475 Roswell Road).

A scheduled outdoor viewing party for Saturday’s Georgia-Florida football game has been cancelled.

There’s a 60 percent chance of rain during the day Saturday, dropping to 30 percent Saturday night. Highs will be in the mid-60s and lows in the mid-40s.

On Sunday, Halloween, will be partly sunny with highs in the high-60s and lows also in the mid-40s.

Cobb Police issue Halloween safety tips for kids, parents and drivers

Submitted information from Cobb Police about staying safe for Halloween (keep in mind rainy weather is in the forecast for Thursday as well):

Walk Safely

  • Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
  • Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.
  • Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.
  • Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
  • Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to
    the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.
  • Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

Drive Extra Safe on Halloween
Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs. Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully. Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances. Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours. 

Always remember to Trick or Treat with an adult!

Keep Costumes Both Creative and Safe
Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.

East Cobb Weekend Events: Halloween; Fall Festivals; more

Some spooky (and rainy) weather is in store for the weekend, but Halloween and related events in East Cobb haven’t been dampened—for the most part. From our calendar listings:

One event that has been called off was the Keheley PTA ES Blues Fest, which has been postponed from Friday to next spring.

From 6-8 p.m. Friday, it’s the McCleskey-East Cobb Family YMCA Spooktacular, geared for kids and featuring carnival games, crafts, and a costume parade. The cost is $5 per child. (1055 E. Piedmont Road).

High school football games continue with playoff contention at stake, and all six East Cobb teams are on the road: Kell vs. Cass; Lassiter vs. Woodstock; Walton vs. Roswell; Sprayberry vs. Sequoyah; Pope vs. Cambridge; Wheeler vs. Campbell. All kickoffs are at 6 p.m.

Take a jaunt down Johnson Ferry Road Saturday morning: It’s the Northeast Cobb YMCA Haunted Hustle 5K, from 8-11 a.m., and it’s a qualifier for the Peachtree Road Race. Same-day registration is available on site. (3010 Johnson Ferry Road).

From 10-5 Saturday, the newly opened Frenchie’s Modern Nail Care is holding a Jewelry Show and Donation Collection. Shop for jewelry presented by Rebecca Deutsch at Park Lane Jewelry. A portion of jewelry sales will be donated to the Center for Children and Young Adults in Marietta for the purchase of healthy snacks and feminine hygiene products. (3154 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 102).

The weather forecast doesn’t look promising for The Avenue East Cobb Fall Festival from Saturday 3-5 but it will go on rain or shine, moving indoors to vacant space if necessary. Arts and crafts, entertainers and movie characters will be on the scene. (4475 Roswell Road).

Another big East Cobb Halloween event is the Sprayberry HS Trunk or Treat, from 4:30-7:30 Saturday. Candy, food trucks, raffles, games and more, kids can come in costumes; admission $3 per child or 2 for $5. (2525 Sandy Plains Road).

This won’t rained out: Two more showings of the Pope Haunted Theater: Things That Go Bump in the Night. Thursday’s session was sold out; the Saturday and Sunday events are from 6-10 in the school’s performing arts center. Tickets are $5. 3001 Hembree Road).

Likewise for the indoors: Two sessions on Saturday for the Wizarding Academy at The Art Place, from 1-3:30 p.m. and from 5-7:30 p.m. For ages 5-12, this event includes games, crafts, magic, snacks and more; Harry Potter dress-ups are welcome. Cost is $25 per person. (3330 Sandy Plains Road).

On Sunday, another indoor event, this a fundraiser for suicide prevention efforts. It’s the 2nd annual Passionate Artists With a Cause, with a portion of local artists’ sales going to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention; see ECN post. East Cobb Halloween events: pumpkin patches, trunk or treat and more

The days of 90-plus-degree heat appear to be over, and a little bit of the fall is starting to set in. A full slate of Halloween and related events is already underway in East Cobb.

We’ll be adding to this over the month, and here’s a glimpse of what’s going on:

  • Through Oct. 31, Mt. Zion UMC (1770 Johnson Ferry Road); Pumpkin Patch Sale, 12-7:30 p.m. Mon-Sat, 9:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. after Oct. 13, 12-7:30 p.m. Sunday; Party in the Patch event Oct. 20 at 4:30 p.m., with movie twin bill at 7:15 p.m., wear customs, pumpkin maze, face painting, jumpy houses, family fun and more;
  • Oct. 25, McCleskey-East Cobb Family YMCA (1055 E. Piedmont Road) is having its annual Spooktacular, with carnival games, crafts and a costume parade. Admission is $5 per child;
  • Oct. 26, Northeast Cobb YMCA (3010 Johnson Ferry Road), renews its Haunted Hustle 5K/10K run down Johnson Ferry. Cost is $150-$40, and it’s a Peachtree Road Race qualifier;
  • Oct. 26, Sprayberry High School (2525 Sandy Plains Road), Trunk or Treat, 4:30-7:30 p.m., Candy, food trucks, raffles, games and more, kids can come in costumes, admission $3 per child or 2 for $5;
  • Oct. 27, St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church (571 Holt Road): Trunk or Treat, 3-5 p.m.; dress up in costumes for candy, food and fun in conjunction with church pre-school staff; trick or treat bags provided for kids;
  • Oct. 30, East Cobb UMC (2325 Roswell Road), Trunk or Treat, 6-8 p.m., spooky food, inflatables and games galore, a free, family-friendly event;
  • Oct. 31 Mt. Paran North Church (1700 Allgood Road); Trunk or Treat 6-8:30 p.m. includes free food, games and carnival rides;
  • Oct. 31, Powers Ferry UMC (245 Powers Ferry Road) has its Trunk or Treat from 6-7:30 p.m., with free candy, plus free hot dogs, chips and a drink.

East Cobb Halloween Weekend Events: Festivals, Haunted Theater, Trunk or Treat and more

East Cobb Halloween Weekend Events

We’re off to a wet, cold start, but that’s about all that can dampen a packed slate of East Cobb Halloween Weekend Events. Saturday will be rainy and chilly too, but Sunday through Oct. 31 promise to be warmer and very sunny.

On Saturday morning, hearty souls will be out early with their running shoes on, in the Haunted Hustle Run at the Northeast Cobb YMCA (3010 Johnson Ferry Road) to benefit both Y branches in East Cobb.

This is for kids, young and old, from the folks at Zaxby’s at 2981 Delk Road: Touch-A-Truck, from 11-3 Saturday. The vehicles to explore will come from local law enforcement, a stretch Hummer, USPS mail truck, and dump truck and more. Wear a costume for “truck” or treating.

The Avenue East Cobb will be holding its Fall Festival Saturday from 3-7 around the shopping center (4475 Roswell Road), with trick-or-treating, games, face-painting, games, prizes and live acoustic music starting at 5 in front of Stockyard Burgers.

Another Community Fall Festival, from 5-7 Saturday at Paper Mill Road Baptist Church  (3227 Paper Mill Road), that’s open to the public, with trick or treating, games, door prizes and more.

Stay warm indoors with the start of Pope High School’s Haunted Theater. This year’s production is “The Circus,” a Halloween thriller with friendly clowns and performers including the bearded lady, a contortionist and a two-headed human, among other creatures. The show starts at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Also indoors, all day Saturday, is the GirlsFIRST Jr. Robotics workshop, from 9-4 at the old East Cobb Middle School (380 Holt Road). It’s for girls grades 6-8, as they will learn about a variety of STEM opportunities and speak to women in STEM fields. Lunch is also being provided.

Saturday’s also the day to deposit old and unused medications on national Medication Take Back Day. Visit WellStar East Cobb Health Park (3747 Roswell Road) between 10-2.

Saturday night, cozy up indoors at the Lassiter Concert Hall (2601 Shallowford Road) for the U.S. Navy Jazz Band Concert, which starts at 7. It’s free to the public.

Sunday’s going to be sunny and in the 70s, perfect for outdoor fun. From 4-6, enjoy another Sunday Funday concert at East Cobb Park (3322 Roswell Road). Bring a picnic and take in the sounds of The Loose Shoes Band.

Also from 4-6, the public is invited to a Trunk or Treat at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church (4495 Sandy Plains Road).

With Halloween stretching into the middle of the week, we’ll stretch our calendar a few days ahead too.

On Monday, it’s a Halloween Food Truck from 5-8 at Paper Mill Village (255 Village Parkway). There will be face painting, live music from the East Cobb School of Rock and all kinds of food truck fare, including Cousins Maine Lobster, Deep South Biscuit and Cattywumpus Grill.

Last call for Trunk or Treat is on Halloween day itself, Wednesday from 6-7:30 p.m. at Powers Ferry United Methodist Church (245 Powers Ferry Road). After collecting candy treats, a hot dog dinner will be served.

East Cobb Weekend Events: Holiday Décor Market; Eastminster Church Festival; Halloween Hikes and more

Good Mews 30th birthday, East Cobb weekend events, Good Mews Holiday Decor Market

Today’s the first day of fall, and it’s starting to feel a little bit like it. Many East Cobb organizations have already begun autumn- and holiday-themed events, and they’re continuing this weekend.

The highlights from our calendar listings for Friday-Sunday:

The Good Mews Holiday Decor Market gets under way Friday and continues every weekend through early December, returning to the Sandy Plains Exchange Shopping Center (1860 Sandy Plains Road, Suite 202). They’re open this Friday and the last Friday of the sale, on Dec. 7, from 12-5; otherwise the hours are Saturdays 10-5 and Sundays 12-5. The kitties like the one above who are the beneficiaries of the sale won’t be onsite, but you can get an early start on gently used goods for holiday shopping. Good Mews also is accepting your donations starting Friday and through Nov. 25;

Church fall festivals are starting to gear up too, and coming up is the Eastminster Presbyterian Church Fall Festival from 12-8 Friday and from 10-4 Saturday at the church (3125 Sewell Mill Road). Games, crafts, kids activities and BBQ are on tap, and the proceeds benefit several local charities, including MUST Ministries;

If you want to get out and stretch your legs while soaking up the beautiful weather and tap into the holidays, Halloween Hikes at the Chattahoochee Nature Center (9135 Willeo Road, Roswell) is an ideal event for the whole family. They’re guided half-mile walks along lighted trails and with crafts and other Halloween decorations. The times Friday and Saturday are from 7-9:45 p.m., and the cost is $12 a person;

The high school football season is drawing to a close, with several East Cobb teams still vying for playoff position. Friday’s games kick off at 7:30 p.m, and they include Cass at Kell, Woodstock at Lassiter, Sequoyah at Sprayberry, Roswell at Walton, Campbell at Wheeler and Pope at Cambridge.

By the way, that Walton-Roswell game is going to be shown live from Raider Valley on Georgia Public Television, as the No. 2 Raiders look to stay unbeaten on the season and in region play.

If high school band music is your thing, you’ve got all day Saturday to take in the 35th Southern Invitational Music Festival, which goes from 10-10 at Sprayberry High School (2525 Sandy Plains Road). Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for students with an ID and free for kids 6 and under.

East Cobb Halloween events: Pumpkin Patches, fairs, festivals and more

Pumpkin Patches are already open at a couple of East Cobb churches, and other faith communities and other arts and musical groups have Halloween-themed events through October.

Here’s a sampling of what we’ve got for this week, and if you have something to submit to our calendar listings, check the information at the bottom of this post:

Pumpkin Patches continue through Oct. 31 at Mt. Zion UMC (1770 Johnson Ferry Road) and St. Andrew UMC (3455 Canton Road).

Both churches will have weekend events to get into the mood of the season, which hasn’t felt much like fall, but cooler weather is expected later this week.

On Friday (11-6) and Saturday (10-4( is the 17th Fall into Crafts Marketplace at St. Andrew, an early and easy way to start holiday shopping while benefitting the church’s women’s mission projects.

On Saturday, Mt. Zion is having its Party in the Patch event from 10-2, and kids are invited to show up in their costumes for treats, games and a lunch for purchase.

On Sunday afternoon, treat your kids and the whole family to a Ghost and Goblins Concert that starts at 4 at the Lassiter Concert Hall (2601 Shallowford Road), featuring the sounds of the Georgia Philharmonic.

Other events during the month include Trunk or Treat events at several churches as well as Sprayberry High School, a fall festival at The Avenue East Cobb, a community fair at Paper Mill Road Baptist Church and a special haunted theater production at Pope High School.

EAST COBB HALLOWEEN EVENTS: Trunk or Treats; Pope Dead Band Running 5K; Holiday Décor Market and more

Don’t need much of a drumroll introduction for what’s coming up over the next few days. The East Cobb Halloween events calendar is absolutely loaded (and if we’ve missed your event there’s still time to let us know. E-mail calendar@eastcobbnews.com and we’ll post it!). So many trunk or treat events, assorted fall festivals and a new spooky event that may become a bonafide tradition: The Pope Dead Band Running 5K. Pope also has a Haunted Theater presentation of “The Dollhouse” to ramp up a frightening selection of Halloween-themed events

Also on tap this weekend is the Sprayberry Hall of Fame Gala and two final events of the fall that have become community stand-bys: Sunday Funday at East Cobb Park, and the Paper Mill Village Food Truck on Monday:

  • Trunk or Treats galore: Kicking off Friday at 6 at Addison ES, and including similar events for kids at St. Catherine’s Episcopal on Saturday, Wesley Chapel UMC on Sunday and on Halloween itself, at Powers Ferry UMC;Pope Dead Band Running 5K, East Cobb Halloween events
  • Run for Your Haunted Lives: A 5K run at night? In the spirit of Halloween, that’s what the Pope High School Marching Band has put together from 7-9 Saturday at the Mountain View Aquatic Center (2650 Gordy Parkway): The Pope Dead Band Running 5K, and you can show up in a costume or regular running attire. The proceeds raise funds for the band, which says it needs to replace Bessie, its aging equipment truck. Race-day registration begins at 6 p.m.;
  • Terrifying dollies: The Pope Haunted Theater gets into the spirit of Halloween with presentations of “The Dollhouse” Saturday and Sunday at $6, after two previous shows this week;
  • Last Call for Pumpkin Patches: They’re on sale at a few East Cobb churches through Halloween;
  • Get Your Pumpkin Carving On: Once you get your pumpkin, bring it on by the Mountain View Regional Library (3320 Sandy Plains Road) from 2-3 on Saturday for a carving event. It’s ideally for kids K-5 to enjoy, but you can come by even if you’re older;
  • Shopping for the kitties: With Halloween near, it also means it’s time for the Good Mews Holiday Décor Market, which starts Saturday at the Sandy Plains Exchange Shopping Center (1860 Sandy Plains Road, at Scufflegrit Road). The hours are 10-6 Saturdays and 12-6 Sundays, and the sale continues through Dec. 17. The proceeds benefit the Good Mews programs to care and place homeless cats for adoption, and they’re taking gently-used items on-site on Saturday until 3 p.m.;
  • All the way to state: The high school football season is winding down, with only two games left. Walton has already clinched a state playoff berth, and Lassiter and Kell have the best chances of joining them. But the biggest high school sporting events this weekend involve the young ladies of East Cobb. On Saturday, Walton attempts a three-peat in the Class 7A state volleyball finals against Etowah (6 p.m., Marietta High School, 1171 Whitlock Ave.). In Columbus, the Pope softball team is competing in the Class 6A softball finals, which got underway Thursday. We’ll be posting updates on these events as we get the results, so keep checking back for the latest scores;
  • Piedmont Church Fall Festival: Sunday will be an all-day and all-night of activities at the Piedmont Church (570 Piedmont Road). Sunday morning services will be followed by a family fall festival from 6-8, including pumpkin painting, a petting zoo and food. The event is free and open to the public.

EAST COBB IN PHOTOS: Show off your Halloween decorations!

Halloween is exactly a week from today, and already many East Cobb homes, neighborhoods and businesses are decked out in creative ways.

We saw this leisurely display in the Riverhill neighborhood off Johnson Ferry Road, and thought we’d solicit more Halloween community photos.

All you have to do is e-mail us and attach your photo(s) to: wendy@eastcobbnews.com. Let us know who you are and where you live so we can give you proper credit as we try to get a good representative sampling from all around East Cobb.

At the end of the week, as Oct. 31 rolls around, we’ll publish a photo gallery.

In the meantime, check out these community Halloween events, some of which are taking place during the week, and go by one of these East Cobb churches for a pumpkin. These pumpkin patches are open every day through Halloween.

EAST COBB WEEKEND EVENTS: Mt. Bethel run; Oktoberfest; Pope & Walton homecoming; ‘The Rainmaker’ and more

Fall is officially here, and it’s starting to look—and feel—like it. Fall festivals, homecoming football games and a special rendition of a Broadway classic are all on tap in East Cobb weekend events, and there’s so much more.

Check out our full East Cobb Events Calendar for more, but we’ve peeled off a few highlights:

  • Football Friday: It’s homecoming for the Pope Greyhounds and Walton Raiders, who kick off their games at 7:30 p.m. Lassiter is home to Roswell in a big region game, and both schools are observing Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a new program at Lassiter to provide education and support for suicide prevention efforts. Wheeler and Sprayberry are on the road, and Kell has the week off;
  • Fall School Festivals Get Started: October is a big month for school festivals, which are held by PTAs and foundations to raise funds for a variety of school programs. This Friday, the Sedalia Park Elementary School Fall Festival & Art Show (2230 Lower Roswell Road) runs from 5-8 p.m., and we’ll have more news about other school festivals as the month goes on;
  • Run for Habitat: Bright and early Saturday (about 7:30 a.m.), Mt. Bethel UMC (4385 Lower Roswell Road) will hold its Habitat Run fundraiser, with proceeds going for the church’s 9th Habitat for Humanity project. There will be award winner trophies, live music, a silent auction and refreshments, and race day registration starts at 6:30 a.m.;
  • Oompah, Brats and Beer: Oktoberfest is in its 9th year at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (2922 Sandy Plains Road), from 10 a.m to 7 p.m. Saturday, and as Lutherans celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Traditional German food and drink, Polka music, face-painting, horseshoes, a petting zoo and a church tour are all on the schedule once again. Overflow parking is next door at the Skip Wells Post Office;
  • Take a bow, please: CenterStage North and The Mountain View Arts Alliance are teaming up for another run of a Broadway (and in this case Hollywood) favorite, starting Friday and continuing through Sunday and again next weekend. “The Rainmaker” starts at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at The Art Place-Mountain View (3330 Sandy Plains Road);
  • Pumpkin Patches in full swing: 3 East Cobb Methodist churches are having their pumpkin patch sales all October, and they’ve got some special events coming up soon. The proceeds from the sales at East Cobb UMC, Mt. Zion UMC and St. Andrew UMC benefit church activities and get the Halloween season off to a festive start. We’ll be posting Halloween events at this link all month; please send your event so we can include it (e-mail address listed below).

East Cobb Pumpkin Patches continue all October, include special events

A few of the Methodist churches in the area are just now receiving their pumpkin supplies as the Halloween season approaches. East Pumpkin Patches are underway at three of the usual locations through Halloween Day, on Oct. 31.

At East Cobb UMC (2325 Roswell Road), the pumpkin patch is open from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The proceeds support Boy Scout Troop 435, and for more information you can visit the troop’s website and Facebook page. In addition to a basic pumpkin, suitable for pie-making and jack-o-lantern carving, the East Cobb UMC spread also has the following:

“Pie pumpkins, wee bees, red, green, and grey Indian, warted pumpkins, small, big, and bigger, captains, and just good ol’ carving pumpkins. Oh . . . and a carving contest where you can enter to win the $10,000 national prize.”

At Mt. Zion UMC (1770 Johnson Ferry Road), the patch is open from 12 p.m.-7:30 p.m. weekdays and 9:30 a.m.-7:3) p.m. on Saturday, through Oct. 31. On Oct. 14, the church is holding a Party in the Patch from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with trick or treats, games, and a lunch for purchase. That event is sponsored by the Mt. Zion Youth Group and Evangelism Team.

The following week, on Oct. 21, Mt. Zion is holding a Movie in the Patch from 7:30 p.m.-10 p.m. featuring “Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin” and “Hocus Pocus.” Bring chairs and a blanket; popcorn and lemonade are provided and no RSVP is required.

At St. Andrew UMC (3455 Canton Road) the “Pumpkin Church” patch hours are from 9:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 12-8 p.m. Sunday.
