Powers Ferry biz update: Kroger opening set for Aug. 2

Powers Ferry biz update Kroger opening

The finishing touches are being put on the new Kroger Superstore that’s the centerpiece of the MarketPlace Terrell Mill development in the heart of the Powers Ferry Road corridor.

It’s one of the last components of the project to open, and a ribbon-cutting has been scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 2, at 8 a.m.

The store is a 90,000-square foot “superstore,” one of the largest for Kroger in the metro Atlanta area, and includes a drive-through pharmacy, a dedicated area for online pickups and a fuel center with 18 pumps that recently opened.

Kroger spokeswoman Tammie Young-Ennaemba said the public is invited to assemble for a rally at 7:30 a.m. before the ribbon-cutting.

The store will open to the public after that, leaving two restaurants as the final additions of the $120 million MarketPlace Terrell Mill, which replaced aging office buildings, retail space and the original campus of Brumby Elementary School and was developed by Connolly and Eden Rock Real Estate Partners.

The Los Abuelos Mexican Grill, with existing locations in Newnan and John Creek, was tentatively to have opened in June at the Shoppes At MarketPlace, but there’s not an update on a new timeline. The Terrell Mill location has a sign in the window indicating that a liquor license has been applied for.

The same is a couple doors down where The Brass Tap Craft Beer Bar is preparing for an opening in August. It’s a a Tampa-based chain with Atlanta-area locations at Perimeter Center, Milton and Hapeville.

A couple miles down Powers Ferry, the Rose and Crown Tavern is expected to reopen this summer, along with a companion restaurant between the new Bexley and Overture apartment complexes on what was Restaurant Row.

An update on the restaurant’s Facebook page was no more specific than this:

“Rose & Crown Tavern and R & C Kitchen coming to you this summer season.”

The tavern (1935 Powers Ferry Road), the last surviving business in Restaurant Row, closed in July 2019 for what was intended to be only two years.

But it’s been a little more than three, as COVID-19-related and other delays have kicked in. Owner Miquel Ayoub has directed customers to the Mojave restaurant he opened on Powers Ferry Road in Sandy Springs in early 2019.

East Cobb News has left a message seeking more information. Readers also asked for more specifics:

“Hurry up and open already!”

“Is Shrimp and Grits still on the menu?”

Not far up the street, a standalone building for the relocating Tasty China Restaurant (1808 Powers Ferry Road) also is nearing completion.

The popular Szechuan restaurant is moving from Franklin Gateway, where it opened in 1998, to the former site of La Frontera Restaurant. A tentative opening was for the spring, and there’s not an update beyond a liquor license application notice in a front window.

At Terrell Mill Village, the former Kouzina Christos space has a new occupant. It’s the forthcoming Milancho Fresh Market & Kitchen, part of a New Jersey-based chain of locations featuring European-style groceries and with a focus on traditional Bulgarian food products.

There was a Milancho grocery and cafe in Smyrna but that closed in early 2022.

And for the time being, the Starbucks on an outparcel facing Powers Ferry and Terrell Mill Road is closed, as the coffee shop is being renovated.

That includes the drive-through window, and there are cones blocking access to the parking lot and drive-through lanes.

Across Powers Ferry, the Jacobs Java Cafe (1350 Terrell Mill Road) serves up Chicago-style coffee, espressos, and smoothies as well as a variety of hot dogs. You can also buy bags of its coffee blend.

East Cobb Tin Lizzy’s closing temporarily for renovations

Tin Lizzy's The Avenue East Cobb temporarily closing

The Tin Lizzy’s restaurant at The Avenue East Cobb will be closing next week for renovations.

North American Properties, which manages the retail center on Roswell Road, said the restaurant will close after dinner service this Sunday, July 9, and reopen for dinner service next Friday, July 14.

“The newly refreshed Tin Lizzy’s at AEC will exude surfer-cool vibes with a fresh, crisp color palette, bold textiles and vintage-style artwork,” NAP said in a release “The breezy, all-weather patio, adorned with cafe tables, lush plants, and corn hole, will be the perfect oasis for a celebration.”

The menu will remain the same, featuring tacos, salads and bowls, salsas, and Mexican skillets, as well as drink specials featuring margaritas.

The renovations come at Tin Lizzy’s amid continuing redevelopment of The Avenue to include jewel box restaurant space and a plaza area and the tentative opening of a Barnes & Noble bookstore this fall in the former Bath, Bed and Beyond space.

East Cobb O’Charley’s restaurant closes on Sandy Plains Road

East Cobb O'Charley's restaurant closes

The only O’Charley’s Restaurant in the East Cobb area has closed its doors.

An online message didn’t indicate the reason but the closing took place over the weekend at 3550 Sandy Plains Road, at the intersection of Shallowford Road.

It’s a freestanding building between a shopping center with a Target store and the Sandy Plains Marketplace.

East Cobb location information has been removed from the restaurant chain’s website.

The fast casual chain is located mostly in the South and has two remaining restaurants in Cobb County, in Acworth and in Austell.

Several other O’Charley’s restaurants have closed in other states in recent days, including Dothan, Ala., Lexington, Ky., and Evansville, Ind. An O’Charley’s in Augusta, Ga., closed last month.

East Cobb News contacted O’Charley’s seeking more information, and a company spokesman issued the following statement from CEO W. Craig Barber:

“It is always a difficult decision to close a store but based on a variety of industry challenges and the macro-economic environment over the last few years, we closed this O’Charley’s location as of June 11.

“We sincerely appreciate our loyal guests who have visited us at this location while also being deeply grateful for the outstanding work of our operating team.

We encourage our customers to visit us at any of our other restaurants across the Southeast, including several in Georgia.”

In March, restaurant site Mashed reported that the once-popular chain, based in Nashville, Tenn., has quietly closed more than 20 locations since 2016, and eight since 2019.

O’Charley’s followed the bar-and-grill concept popularized by Applebee’s and Ruby Tuesday, but recent trends show that “people are opting for either independent restaurants or more specialty dining concepts.”

Cleaver and Cork issued beer and wine license after reversal

Cleaver and Cork opens East Cobb

Cobb commissioners on Tuesday upheld the reversal of an initial denial of a beer and wine license to the Cleaver and Cork retail butcher shop in East Cobb.

Commissioners voted to uphold the Cobb License Review Board’s reversal on their consent agenda, and it’s a process we’ve written about before.

There are requirements in the Cobb County Code for alcohol-serving businesses located within certain distances of residential neighborhoods, public/government buildings and houses of religious, unless they appeal.

In this case, Cleaver and Cork, located in the Shops at Woodlawn (1062 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 162-D), is less than 300 feet from homes and less than 600 feet from a church or school (Johnson Ferry Baptist Church and Johnson Ferry Christian Academy).

The Cobb Business License Division’s denial was appealed to the License Review Board, which voted to reverse that decision on April 27. The appeals are given final consideration by commissioners.

There was no known community opposition to Cleaver and Cork’s request for a beer and wine license.

Other businesses in the same retail center that have been granted alcohol licenses are the Publix store and the newly opened First Watch restaurant.

Cleaver and Cork, which opened last November, said it wants to sell craft beer and boutique wines as part of the store’s offering of gourmet meats, specialty cheeses, breads, charcuterie boards, pasta and desserts.

Audrey Stine, the Cleaver and Cork owner, said during the appeal hearing that “every customer will be required to present a government issued ID to purchase alcohol. Ms. Stine stated the consequence for an underage sale will be immediate termination.”

All of the alcoholic beverages sold there will be for off-premises consumption, she said, adding that employees found to have sold beer or wine to underage customers will be terminated.

The weather was fantastic and the crowds were huge for the 2023 rendition of the Taste of East Cobb, which is a major fundraiser for the Walton Band Parent Association.

More than 100 restaurants, vendors and sponsors (including East Cobb News) set up booths offering food samples, company swag and even mini chiropractic adjustments.

Various bands performed—Walton High School Jazz Bands, Wheeler High School Jazz Band, South Cobb High School Jazz Band, Dickerson Middle School Jazz Band, Dodgen Middle School Pops Ensemble, and Hightower Trail Middle School Jazz Band.

There also were raffle prizes and drawings, and guests voted for their favorite vendors.

We were fortunate to be seated near two savory restaurants, Mediterranean Grill, and Belen de La Cruz: gyros to the left of us and empanadas to the right.

Thanks to David Wilson of the Walton Band Parent Association for sharing some photos. We’ve identified his shots in the photo gallery below.

The Taste of East Cobb will take place May 6 at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church (955 Johnson Ferry Road) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is the major fundraiser of the Walton Band Parent Association, which supports Walton HS band programs.

Some of those bands will be performing live music throughout the day, and there will be a kids’ zone, a silent auction of merchandise and a “Best of Taste of East Cobb” voting competition.

As you may have seen on the East Cobb News website and our newsletter, there’s a special ticket sale for advance bulk purchases of food (20 or more) through May 4. Admission to the festival is free as is parking in the south lot of the church.
