Duck Donuts to open East Cobb franchise at Merchant’s Walk

Duck Donuts, a specialty chain that’s moving into the Atlanta area, will be opening soon in East Cobb at Merchant’s Walk.Duck Donuts East Cobb

Company spokeswoman Kristen Kellum told East Cobb News there’s not a definite grand opening date yet, although a media preview event is slated for early July.

All she’s saying for now is that the shop will open this summer.

It’s going to be located in the former Gigi’s Cupcakes space at 1281 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 116, between Mirko Pasta and Bar Method.

Here’s what Duck Donuts, which has two other franchises in Atlanta, is about:

Duck Donuts specializes in warm, delicious and made-to-order donuts. Customers can create their own donut combination by choosing from a variety of coatings, toppings and drizzles, including traditional favorites such as chocolate icing with sprinkles and more adventurous creations such as maple icing with bacon.

The family-friendly stores offer a viewing area where children and adults alike can watch their donuts being made from scratch to finish. Duck Donuts also sells coffee, tea, donut breakfast sandwiches and more.

Chicken Salad Chick to open 2nd East Cobb location at Sandy Plains Centre

East Cobb is getting a second location of Chicken Salad Chick. The grand opening for the new store, at Sandy Plains Centre (2960 Shallowford Road, Suite 140), is June 25. East Cobb Chicken Salad Chick

The Auburn, Ala.-based sandwich eatery first opened in East Cobb in 2014 at the Providence Square Shopping Center. The Sandy Plains store will be the 120th Chicken Salad Chick in 12 states, mostly in the South.

The new location will be situated between Reveille Cafe and Pet Supplies Plus and Kroger.

The grand opening event begins June 25 at 10 a.m., and the first 100 guests will get free chicken salad for a year.

First-day customers can enter a drawing for the same promotion.

Chicken Salad Chick’s menu includes more than 12 types of Southern-style chicken salad sandwiches, as well as pimiento cheese, egg salad and club sandwiches, salads, soups and children’s options.

East Cobb restaurant update: Loyal Tavern closes at Parkaire

East Cobb Loyal Tavern closes

We got a tip over the weekend that Loyal Tavern—originally known as Loyal Q and Brew—has closed its doors at the Parkaire Landing Shopping Center.

There’s no word on when the restaurant shut its doors, and there’s no mention on its social media accounts or the restaurant group’s website.

There is this sign on the front door:

The renamed restaurant opened only in March, replacing a smokehouse restaurant with tavern fare and a sports bar theme.

The Loyal Q owners were behind the successful Taco Mac chain when they opened Loyal Q in East Cobb in August 2017.

Last year they opened the first Loyal Tavern in downtown Roswell, and what is now the only remaining Loyal Q in Alpharetta.

The East Cobb location was in a competitive area for both concepts. Close by on Lower Roswell Road are Sam’s BBQ-1 and Bradley’s Bar and Grill.

Also nearby in the Johnson Ferry corridor is the Suburban Tap.

Jason’s Deli is teaming up with the Cobb Chamber of Commerce to host a ribbon cutting for their Marietta location on May 23, at 11 a.m. The deli is located at 1401 Johnson Ferry Rd.

The East Cobb community is encouraged to stop by the deli and enjoy free samples until 12 p.m. Guests will also be able to order lunch from their diverse menu, such as Reuben THE Great, the California Club, and the Garden Fresh Salad bar that features 50+ ingredients, including select organics.

“We are so excited to be a part of the East Cobb community, and we’re looking forward to celebrating with the Chamber of Commerce and East Cobb community,” said Managing Partner Greg Felter.

East Cobb restaurant update: Los Bravos opens on Johnson Ferry Road

Last week the Los Bravos Mexican Restaurant group relocated a second location in East Cobb, in the spot formerly occupied by Zeal (1255 Johnson Ferry Road, in the Market Plaza Shopping Center), after moving it from 1360 Powers Ferry Road.

That’s where the MarketPlace Terrell Mill development is slated to go, and what was called Los Bravos #1 closed in January.

Los Bravos has been open since April 7 on Johnson Ferry, and the hours are the same as the old place—11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., seven days a week. There’s not a website for now, but the phone is 770-916-1776.

Those are the same hours for the other nearby Los Bravos restaurant, at 2125 Roswell Road, in the East Lake Shopping Center.

More openings . . .

Also now open, at the Pavilions at East Lake (2100 Roswell Road, Suite 2114) is Kayhill’s Sports Bar and Grill, adjacent to the J. Christopher’s.

Plans have been in the works for several months by former Marietta Billiard Club owner James Kayhill to open another sports bar-themed spot with billiards and poker tables and dart boards, along with big screen TVs.

Live entertainment is coming soon. The menu includes daily specials and extensive beer, wine and cocktail selections, and there’s a daily Happy Hour from 2-7 pm.

. . . and a grand reopening

The Chick-fil-A at Woodlawn Square opened this morning, as we’ve noted several times over the months it was closed for remodeling. The hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

Coming attractions

From the ICYMI files, just across the Woodlawn Square parking lot will soon mark the return of Mellow Mushroom to the Johnson Ferry Road corridor. We don’t have an estimated time of opening yet, but will post that as soon as we find out.

Mellow Mushroom returning to Johnson Ferry corridor of East Cobb

The space in the Woodlawn Square Shopping Center that’s been the site for a number of failed restaurants over the years will soon be filled by a pizza chain that’s returning to the Johnson Ferry Road area.

Signs are up for Mellow Mushroom over what had been most recently Muss & Turner’s and Common Quarter. The 5,200 square feet of space at 1205 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 101, has been vacant for more than a year, since Muss & Turner’s closed abruptly.

Mellow Mushroom locations still exist on Shallowford Road and Powers Ferry Road, but the chain left this particular part of the community when the Fountains at Olde Towne closed to give way to the Northside Hospital East Cobb Medical Center.

The announcement comes as the Chick-fil-A store at Woodlawn Square is set to reopen on Monday, after a nine-month renovation.

Woodlawn Square is managed by Retail Planning Corp., located at Paper Mill Village.

Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square opening date has been announced

Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square reopening

You can go over to the Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square Facebook page for a lot more, including a full video presentation of the store’s long awaited announcement about its reopening.

Starting at 6 a.m. sharp on Monday, April 15, they’ll be back in business, after closing in July for a complete rebuild of the restaurant and a reconfiguration of the parking lot to accommodate a double drive-through window.

So Tax Day will be known for something more pleasant, at least in East Cobb.

We’re going to miss giving you these periodic updates, since so many of you have asked from time to time (but we’ve compiled links to them below):

Initially, the store was to have opened in January. But heavy rains over the fall and winter prompted the delays.

Some have wondered why so much attention has been given to one fast-food place among many in East Cobb, but it is on Johnson Ferry Road. And it is Chick-fil-A, whose home base is in Atlanta but which elected officials in Buffalo and San Antonio have used to score political points.

No such thing is likely to happen here, at least in the heart of one of the busiest corridors in our community.

Organizers of the Taste of East Cobb are announcing that the annual food and community event will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2019. 

Known as “the most delicious Saturday of the year,” the Taste of East Cobb event will be held on May 4th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the parking lot of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, 955 Johnson Ferry Road, Marietta, Georgia 30068. 

“Taste of East Cobb is our way of bringing people of all ages together to celebrate our vibrant community,” said Gregg Maynard, event chair. “Join us for a great day of family, food, and fun!”

Taste of East Cobb showcases the best of East Cobb’s local restaurant talent with chefs offering a delicious variety of tastings from their menus. All restaurant featured ‘tastes’ will be offered at only 1-5 tickets per serving, so make sure to arrive HUNGRY!

Come for the food — stay for the fun.  Event goers can discover unique products from local vendors as well as participate in a silent auction with a lot of unique opportunities for great deals on valuable items.

Local high school jazz bands will provide music throughout the day — come hear some of the best emerging music talent from local neighborhoods. Our kid zone features inflatables and hands-on activities.  Also, Taste of East Cobb is pleased to welcome Atlanta United 2 to the event — soccer ticket discount codes will be available on site for a game later in the evening.

Another periodic update on the reopening of the Woodlawn Square Chick-fil-A, since we do get inquries: The store is now accepting job applications, but the tentative reopening has slid back into mid-April.

That’s the word from a Chick-fil-A spokeswoman, who said a grand reopening date hasn’t been scheduled.

East Cobb restaurants with failing health inspections get ‘A’ scores on followup

In last week’s food score listings, there were two East Cobb restaurants that got failing scores. When that happens, the Cobb and Douglas Department of Public Health typically comes back within 10 days for another inspection. East Cobb restaurants, Montana's Bar and Grill

Both of them got “A” scores in repeat visits this week.

One is Judy’s Country Kitchen (2745 Sandy Plains Road, Suite 106), a buffet restaurant which was first inspected on Feb. 14, and given a score of 58. It was cited for multiple violations, including improper food storage, dirty equipment and utensils and not storing wet cloths used for food-area cleanup in sanitizing solution (here’s the report).

On Wednesday, Judy’s got an “A” score of 93, but two new violations were noted: storing  powder cleaner in dry storage without a label, and storing sanitizing solution near salt and sugar. The new report indicated both violations were corrected on-site.

On Feb. 12, Montana’s Bar and Grill (2995 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 330) got a score of 68 for a number of violations, including what inspectors said was “a large rodent infestation” and “the facility has a lack of managerial control.” (Report here)

This Tuesday, the restaurant got another inspection, and received a score of 100 (report here). Inspectors noted that the facility was “treated by Ecolab for pests, lights installed in dry storage areas, dishwasher repaired, facility thoroughly cleaned. No need for additional follow up at this time.”

A second bad inspection could force a restaurant to be closed until corrective action is taken.

East Cobb restaurant update: La Novia Taqueria now known as Moxie Taco

It’s in the same location at Paper Mill Village (255 Village Parkway Suite 330), with the same hours and same menu, but a new name. From the Moxie Restaurant Group today comes this news:Moxie Taco

“In honor of our loyal and supportive East Cobb customers who have called it “moxie taco” from its development, we have decided to officially rename La Novia Taqueria! Come by for some hot cheese dip and a cold margarita to brighten up this dreary weather week.”

When La Novia Taqueria opened in 2017 the building that formerly housed Valenit’s restaurant and Caffe Fortunato and had been painted yellow. It’s now a gray shade.

The East Cobb taqueria scene also has grown, with the addition of Taqueria Tsunami last spring on Johnson Ferry Road.

The hours for Moxie Taco are daily, 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
