East Cobb biz notes: Reveille Cafe wins Golden Spatula Award

Reveille Golden Spatula Award

A few restaurants in East Cobb get perfect scores of 100 on their health inspections. But only one in metro Atlanta gets a local media outlet’s Golden Spatula Award every week.

In early September, Reveille Cafe in East Cobb was presented with the award, which is given out by CBS46 Atlanta. The breakfast, brunch and lunch spot, located at the Sandy Plains Centre, was inspected on July 10 by the Cobb health department (here’s the report).

Since then, only two East Cobb restaurants have had perfect 100 scores, although a number have scores in the 90s.

Reveille Cafe is part of the J. Christopher’s group, opened in 2013.

The French Table opens on Lower Roswell

On Sept. 7 The French Table, a French-themed furniture and home decor store, held a grand opening event at 4665 Lower Roswell Road. That’s in the small retail center with Ming’s Asian Kitchen at the intersection of Woodlawn Drive.

The owner is Tracy Kreiner Barnes, a real estate agent and CEO of Luxury Homes Atlanta.

Fit Body Boot Camp opening soon

On Sept. 30, the indoor fitness chain Fit Body Boot Camp will open an East Cobb location. It will be at 1062 Johnson Ferry Road, in the Shops at Woodlawn. The local owner and operator is Anan Tanneeru, a longtime IT professional.

According to company literature, Fit Body Boot Camp “that combines bodyweight exercises and minimal equipment to create a low risk, high reward workout.”

Pita Mediterranean Street Food chain coming to East Cobb

East Cobb Pita Mediterranean Street Food

A location of the growing Atlanta-based Pita Mediterranean Street Food chain is coming to East Cobb.

This is at the Sandy Plains Centre (2960 Shallowford Road), in Suite 112 formerly occupied by Teriyaki Madness. Last week, Pita got an alcohol license. There’s no opening date that’s been announced yet.

Pita began in 2011 with a store in Peachtree City, and has since expanded to 20 stores in metro Atlanta and north Georgia. The East Cobb location, which is one of several slated to open soon, would be close to existing Pita restaurants near Town Center and the Marietta Square.

The eatery features Greek menu items, including pita and gyro options, and well as Middle Eastern specialties including shawarma, falafel, kafta, hummus, ganoush, rice bowls, salads, kids’ plates and desserts.

The entrees range from $7.95 to $13.99.

Restaurant news: Flying Biscuit Cafe returning to East Cobb

Flying Biscuit East Cobb

Several years after leaving East Cobb, the Flying Biscuit Cafe is returning.

Like Mellow Mushroom, it’s coming back to the Johnson Ferry Road corridor, albeit in another location.

After Flying Biscuit left East Cobb in 2010, its freestanding space at Woodlawn Commons was occupied by Chase Bank, next to the Fed Ex store.

There’s a sign in the window at the old La Vida Massage space at Parkaire Landing Shopping Center indicating Flying Biscuit will open soon there, but there’s not a specific date indicated.

The Flying Biscuit space at Parkaire is 3,000 square feet, according to Jamestown Limited Partners, the retail center’s management firm.

We’ve contacted Flying Biscuit and Jamestown to get more details and will update here when we get them.

Ironically, La Vida is now located in the same Woodlawn Square retail center where Flying Biscuit once had been.

Flying Biscuit announced recently it was opening in the Castleberry Hill neighborhood in Atlanta and last year opened a restaurant in Toco Hills near Decatur. It also opened a new restaurant in South Carolina and is reopening a location in Houston.

According to its website, the Atlanta-based company operates 20 restaurants in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Texas. Twelve of them are in metro Atlanta, including Kennesaw, Roswell and Sandy Springs.

The Loyal Tavern (formerly Loyal Q and Brew) closed up at Parkaire after less than two years in business. That space had been vacant for a few years before that. The Pollo Tropical space at Parkaire has been converted into a Regions Bank.

Other restaurants and eateries at Parkaire include Ted’s Montana Grill, Johnny’s New York Pizza, Sakura, Cold Stone Creamery, Moe’s, Subway and Taco Bell.

H/T to The Current Hub.

AJ's Seafood Pobobys expanding

The former Great Clips space at the Pavilions at East Lake has been papered over for several weeks now, right next to longstanding AJ’s Seafood and Poboys, which announced this week it’s expanding with an oyster bar.

Assorted oyster selections and a full bar are planned, and the tentative opening is around Labor Day. In addition, items from AJ’s Louisiana-style fare of poboys, seafood platters, muffelata sandwiches, gumbo, salads and burgers also will be available.

Great Clips has moved a few doors down. The AJ’s oyster bar will be located at 2100 Roswell Road, Suite 2148, next to Kroger.

Five Guys plans at East Cobb Crossing OK’d by commissioners

East Cobb Five Guys

A Five Guys restaurant proposed for the former Del Taco location at the East Cobb Crossing Shopping Center can go ahead after site revisions were approved Tuesday by the Cobb Board of Commissioners.

The measure, which was approved unanimously as part of the commissioners’ consent agenda, includes site plan and design changes that didn’t require rezoning.

The only addition to the original case file came from the East Cobb Civic Association, which requested that the district commissioner (Bob Ott) approve a landscaping plan. That stipulation was included before the vote at Ott’s request.

Commissioners also approved via consent a special land-use permit for SZS Holdings LLC to expand a used-car parking lot on an acre at 2069 Roswell Road by 41 spaces. Among the stipulations are for a landscaping plan subject to district commissioner approval and for no vehicles to be parked on pervious surfaces.

Some East Cobb cases on Tuesday’s agenda were not heard. Among those applications that have been delayed is a request by Poag Shopping Centers, LLC, owners of The Avenue East Cobb, to change stipulations and a site plan amendment (case file here).

Poag wants to change the appearance and location of the monument sign at the entrance to the shopping center, and to alter opening hours for a fitness center from 7 a.m. to 5 a.m. The closing hours would remain at 11 p.m.

The nearby East Hampton neighborhood has objected on both counts, asking for a smaller sign and saying there’s no need for a fitness center to open at 5 a.m.

The East Cobb Civic Association has filed a letter in support of East Hampton.

Five Guys wants to open in East Cobb at closed Del Taco site

East Cobb Five Guys

East Cobb may get its first Five Guys restaurant soon, pending action later this month by the Cobb Board of Commissioners.

We saw an “Other Business” item in the Aug. 20 agenda files for a franchise location at the former Del Taco restaurant in the East Cobb Crossing Shopping Center (4269 Roswell Road).

The nationwide chain featuring hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, French fries and milkshakes has three current Cobb locations and another in Sandy Springs.

ECC Outparcel, LLC is seeking signage and other design changes that don’t require rezoning, but must be signed off by commissioners. The outparcel site and shopping center were zoned for planned shopping center use in 1998.

In 2015 Del Taco got county permission to amend certain signage stipulations. The Five Guys amendment is asking to continue the signage uses permitted when Del Taco was open, and says in its application that “no change of use, occupancy or construction type is proposed.”

Five Guys also says in the case file it’s not proposing any new signage “in locations not previously approved” by commissioners for use by previous tenants.

The case file (you can read it here) includes other renderings in addition to the one at the top, as well as other design proposals and parking configurations.

Five Guys opened in the Washington, D.C. area in 1986 and now has more than 1,500 locations, with nearly as many planned in expansion.

Johnson Ferry Mellow Mushroom opening set for late fall

Johnson Ferry Mellow Mushroom opening

Because readers have been asking—and we’ve been wondering too—when the Mellow Mushroom location on Johnson Ferry Road will be opening, we asked the company.

Via a social media message, we were told sometime in the late fall, but no specific date was given.

Little has happened at the former Common Quarter/Muss & Turner’s space at Woodlawn Square since the sign went up in April, but now a contractor’s sign has been placed in the window, and some construction materials were sitting near the entrance.

When it opens, it will be the third Mellow Mushroom in East Cobb—to go with restaurants on Shallowford Road and Powers Ferry Road—and will be returning just north along Johnson Ferry from where the chain operated at the formerFountains at Olde Towne shopping center.

Rose and Crown Tavern closing for 2 years in Restaurant Row redevelopment

Rose and Crown, East Cobb Restaurant Row rezoning, Rose and Crown Tavern closing

This has been anticipated for a few months now, and it’s official: The Rose and Crown Tavern on Powers Ferry Road has announced its temporary closure.

The last remaining survivor of “Restaurant Row” will close next Saturday, July 13, for a two-year period as the cluster of restaurant buildings makes way for a new mixed-use development.

Rose and Crown will be part of that project, with expanded space in a retail component in a 578,000-square foot complex that will include a 280-unit apartment building and 171 senior-living units.

The rezoning for the 8.8-acre project was approved last August. The project is being developed by Greystar Development Group of Atlanta.

Ground is expected to be broken this month for the project. The apartment building is being called Elan at Powers Ferry, and the senior homes will be called Overture Powers Ferry.

Miguel Ayoub opened Rose and Crown in 2010 with his wife at a former La Madeleine restaurant at 1931 Powers Ferry Road. In the new development, the Rose and Crown space will take up 6,000 square feet of a planned 10,0000-square foot retail center.

The property is near the Wildwood Office Park, but other restaurant concepts nearby have come and gone: A Sal Grosso Brazilian steakhouse, TGI Friday’s and Famous Dave’s.

While Rose and Crown is shuttered, the Ayoubs will be running Mojave, a casual Latin restaurant at the former Ray’s Rio Bravo at 6450 Powers Ferry Road, just across the river in Sandy Springs.

A late July opening date for Mojave is planned.
