Good Mews 30th birthday, East Cobb weekend events, Good Mews Holiday Decor Market

Today’s the first day of fall, and it’s starting to feel a little bit like it. Many East Cobb organizations have already begun autumn- and holiday-themed events, and they’re continuing this weekend.

PHOTOS: 23rd annual East Cobber parade on Johnson Ferry Road

23rd annual East Cobber parade

Dozens of schools, churches, civic groups, political candidates, local businesses and community organizations marched down Johnson Ferry Road Saturday morning in the 23rd annual East Cobber parade.

For nearly three hours, a busy stretch of one of East Cobb’s busiest thoroughfares was cleared of vehicles in a community celebration.

After the parade, more groups and businesses, food vendors and entertainers filled the south parking lot at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church for a community festival.

The dignitaries included school teachers of the year and Miss Cobb County. Several high school bands tooted fight songs in a quick turn-around from Friday night football games.

And kids brought bags to fill with candy thrown by parade participants.

Below are selected videos from the parade as well as a photo slideshow. (All East Cobb News photos and videos by Wendy Parker.)

MDE School of East Cobb holding Saturday BBQ fundraiser at Red Hare

MDE School of East Cobb

Thanks to Mitchell Katz of the MDE School of East Cobb for letting us know about a fundraiser it’s holding Saturday from 7-11 p.m. at Red Hare Brewing (1998 Delk Industrial Blvd.). He tells us the private school currently serves around 50 K-12 children with varying special needs.

Here’s more from MDE on the BBQ event, which costs $35 a person:

The second annual event is a benefit for the MDE School, a non-profit, private school in East Cobb that serves K-12 children with varying special needs.The MDE School is the only school of its kind in Cobb County and provides an exceptional learning environment where students with special needs have access to academics, music, drama, adaptive PE, enrichment programs and life skills training. MDE serves students with Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, communication disorders, and developmental delays.

The MDE School is entering its 10th academic year and this year marks the 10th anniversary of the sudden passing of Marc David Elkan who was the inspiration for the school. Marc loved all children and volunteered regularly with youth centered organizations.

After his passing, his wife Mrs. Mindy Elkan, was inspired to continue his legacy by establishing a school for children who learn differently. Since the inception of MDE, enrollment has increased from just 3 to 51 students from all over metro Atlanta and has served 230 children over the last 10 years. MDE is able to uniquely serve children with special needs who cannot be served in a traditional educational environment, and addresses each students’ learning, social, cognitive, and developmental goals allowing their students to maximize their potential.

The fun-filled, casual evening for adults is $35 per person for tickets. Sponsors include Honest-1 Auto Care, Alexander Blaire Financial Consulting Inc., Credit Union of Georgia, Ms. Donna Maslia, Haven Insurance Group, and Williamson Bros. Bar-B-Q. Sponsorships ranging from $250-$2,500 are still available.

Evening events include music by Shadowood, BBQ, local craft beer, raffle, and a silent auction with prizes ranging from $20 to $2,000. Proceeds from the event will go towards the purchase of new school fitness equipment and will help renovate the MDE playground.

Fore the Cure Golf Tournament breast cancer fundraiser returns to Indian Hills

Fore the Cure golf tournament

Thanks to Crystal Bradshaw for letting us know about the return of the Fore the Cure Golf Tournament at Indian Hills next month, as part of a larger fundraising and awareness campaign for breast cancer programs across the state:

Join us on Monday, October 22nd at Indian Hills Country Club for the fourth annual “Fore the Cure” golf tournament benefiting It’s The Journey, a local 501c3 that raises money exclusively for breast health and breast cancer programs in Georgia. This event is chaired by longtime East Cobb residents George and Kathy Bartelme.

“We love that It’s The Journey is a small organization making a big impact in our community. Since 2002, they have funded 335 grants totaling $14 million to support everything from breast exams, to biopsies, to research, all right here in Georgia. As a breast cancer survivor, it meant a lot to me find an organization that was helping the women and men in my community in meaningful, tangible ways.”

The Bartelme support has evolved into an annual golf tournament that is now in its fourth year. The annual “Fore the Cure” golf tournament has raised over $140,000 since 2015. This year the tournament will take place on Monday, October 22nd at the Indian Hills Country Club. Registration begins at 8:00 am, with a shotgun start at 9:30 am. Participants will receive the use of a golf cart, lunch, 18 holes of golf, and prizes for golf challenges. Individual, foursome, and corporate sponsorships are available as well as donations for the silent auction and in-kind gifts. It is a very fun tournament and players consist of both members/non-members of Indian Hills as well as men and women.

There will also be a silent auction the day of the tournament. Items for auction include golf packages, sports memorabilia, original artwork, themed gift baskets, and more.

For more information on the tournament, to sign up, or to donate, please visit: https://forethecuregolf.auction-bid.org/microsite/# or Kathy.bovey.bartelme@gmail.com

The fight against breast cancer is not a single battle. It’s an ongoing struggle that is faced with courage and determination. It is, in fact, a journey. It’s The Journey, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization founded in 2002 that raises funds for Georgia breast cancer organizations offering support to many women and men across the state.

It’s The Journey, Inc.’s mission is to support Georgians by raising money for breast health and breast cancer programs that focus on screening, diagnostics, genetic counseling and testing, support services, and research.

At 12:15, the Fort Benning Silver Wings aerial show takes place.

At 2, the silent auction closes, with the grand prize winner announced, as well as the car show awards.

Pope, Lassiter band fundraisers to take place Saturday

Not long after they’ll be playing during their school’s football game Friday night, the Pope and Lassiter bands will be holding fundraisers on Saturday.

From 9-4, the Pope Band Recycling Event will accept all kinds of electronics, metal and paper goods, for $10 a car. They’ll shred paper while you watch, and additional disposal fees will apply to certain items. The school’s located at 3001 Hembree Road, and here’s a detailed list of what they’ll accept, and what they won’t.

From 10-5 Saturday, the Lassiter Band Mattress Sale takes place in the band room at the school (2601 Shallowford Road). There will be a full showroom set-up with factory direct prizes. The proceeds will go to help the band’s upcoming trip to the Tournament of Roses Parade. A mattress sale earlier this year netted $12K, and fundraisers later this fall include the raffling of a Jeep Wrangler from Ed Voyles.

Oh, and about those football games? Five of the six East Cobb teams are in action tonight:

  • Pope (0-0) at Lassiter (0-1), 7:30 p.m.;
  • Sprayberry (0-1) at Wheeler (1-0), 7:30 p.m.;
  • Walton (1-0) at Collins Hill (0-0), 7:30 p.m.

The Kell Longhorns are off this week.

From 7-9:30 p.m. treat yourself to the sounds of Will Scruggs and the KSU Jazz Combo (above), in this free event sponsored by the Cobb Library Foundation;

The weekend is the finale for CenterStage North’s presentation of “On Golden Pond,” which has shows at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at The Art Place (3330 Sandy Plains Road). Tickets are $16 and must be purchased at the CSN box office, not by going to the facility;

The high school sports season is already underway, and it shifts into full gear on Friday with the start of football season. Lassiter is home to Harrison and Sprayberry is playing home to South Forsyth, while Wheeler is at Lambert. Kell and Walton will be playing Saturday morning in the Corky Kell Classic at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta;

Also on Friday is a special sporting event at Pope High School, whose football season starts next week. Ex-Greyhound softball star Kelly Barnhill, a college standout at the University of Florida and member of the USA team that just qualified for the Olympics, will return to throw out the first pitch against Sequoyah and sign autographs. The game starts at 6 at the Pope softball complex (3001 Hembree Road), and admission is free;

More sporting fun on Saturday, for kids 3-16: The Cobb Parks Fishing Rodeo takes place from 9-12 at Hyde Farm (726 Hyde Road), with prizes in various age groups. It’s free to cast your line in the water, but you’ll need to bring your own poles and gear.

On Sunday afternoon, hear the inspiring story of a family’s service dog from Roswell author Donnie Winokur. She’s the author of “Chancer,” the Golden retriever who served as a companion to her adopted son, who’s afflicted by fetal alcohol syndrome. She’ll be discussing the story, doing a demonstration and signing books from 3-5 at Georgia Veterinary Rehabilitation & Pain Management (230 Johnson Ferry Place).

EAST COBB WEEKEND EVENTS: East Cobb Rotary Dog Days Run; Lutzie 43 Road Race; Wasted Potential concert; football events; and more

East Cobb Rotary Dog Days Run, East Cobb Weekend Events

As we’re typing these words, the sun has come out! It’s expected to stay out, at least partially, as this weekend’s sports-heavy lineup leads off Saturday with the 13 annual East Cobb Rotary Dog Days Run.

It gets underway at 7:30 a.m. at the East Cobb-McCleskey Family YMCA (1055 E. Piedmont Road). Race-day registration is $30, and the proceeds benefit a number of East Cobb charities, including School Mates Literacy Project, Canine Assistance, Aids Awareness, The Center for Family Resources, Cobb County Public Safety and Kids2Leaders Inc.

At the same time, the Lutzie 43 Foundation Road Race is taking place at Lutzie Field at Lassiter High School (2601 Shallowford Road), with proceeds going to the non-profit set up in the memory of Phil Lutzenkirchen, the former Trojans football star. It helps teach young people leadership skills and how to make good decisions. There’s a 1-mile fun run for kids in addition to the 5K. Race-day registration is $30 for students and $43 for adults.

Not far away, another school community is celebrating its upcoming football season. The Pope Football Pancake Breakfast goes from 9-11 in the cafeteria at the school (3001 Hembree Road), and is a Pope Touchdown Club fundraiser. For $11 a person or $26 a family (players eat free!), you’ll get pancakes, sausage, bagels, fruit and juices; stick around for the team picture day to follow.

Wasted Potential Brass Band
The Wasted Potential Brass Band returns to The Art Place Saturday.

Saturday also is Sandy Plains Softball Fun Day from 11-1 at Field 1 at Sandy Plains Park (2977 Gordy Parkway), and it includes walk-up registration for the fall season.

On Saturday evening, bring your blankets and lawn chairs to The Art Place (3320 Sandy Plains Road) and enjoy the sounds of the Wasted Potential Brass Band. The popular Atlanta group is appearing as part of the Mountain View Arts Alliance’s Summer Stars Concert Series. Concessions are in exchange for a donation to MVAA, or you can bring your own food (but no alcohol is allowed).

More prep football on Sunday takes place 2-4. It’s Walton Raider Day at the Raider Valley stadium (1590 Bill Murdock Road). Admission is free, and the jamboree-style event includes kids games, a coaches dunk tank, face-painting, trampoline-jumping and a meet-and-greet with all the Raiders teams. Wear your Walton Spirit gear, since there will be drone group photo taken during the day.

Also on Sunday, the Good Mews Cat Shelter (3805 Robinson Road) is having another microchip and vaccination clinic from 10-3. Additional services include nail clippings, and appointments are encouraged but not required. Dogs are welcome too, and all pets must be in a carrier or on a leash when they arrive.

Geeks of all ages showed up Saturday for the Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center Mini Con, which included a broad range of activities in the comic and digital arts.

The event included workshops and demonstrations, live music, food and vendors using most of the new facility’s creative arts space.

The highlight of the afternoon was a costume contest, with winners and runners-up in children and adult divisions. While Star Wars characters were popular, so were the likes of Elvis Presley and Monty Python characters.

Among the many activities for children were demonstrations from members of the Giga-Bites Cafe tabletop gaming store in East Cobb.

James Mitchell of the Sewell Mill Library organized the event and said around 1,000 attended in all, including many who had not been to the library before.

Like other events at the library since it opened last December, Mini Con was designed to attract not only new faces, but to demonstrate the unifying forces of the creative arts, across many platforms and genres.

East Cobb Weekend Events: Sewell Mill Library Mini Con, ‘The Tempest,’ Bradley’s Car Show, Marietta Campmeeting closes and more

The Sewell Mill Library Mini Con that’s set for Saturday is one of the new facility’s most ambitious events yet.

Sewell Mill Library Mini Con

It’s from 1-6, and like the world-famous Comic-Con International taking place this weekend in San Diego, is a celebration of comics arts and related popular culture.

There will be a Cosplay contest, panels and workshops on the digital arts, local artists and vendors (including the Giga-Bites Café of East Cobb) and food purchases from Good Food Marietta across the street and more.

The activities also include a Dungeons & Dragons Adventure League all day, tabletop games, 3D printing demos and Captain Underpants games.

The full schedule can be found here with links to much of what’s going on.

James Mitchell of the Sewell Mill Library explained the evolution of Mini Con to East Cobb News:

“Mini Con started as an idea from the Sewell Mill Library & Cultural Center staff to bring together local community partners including local artist, writers, gamers, podcasters, cosplayers, businesses, and filmmakers into one local event.

“We have tried to create an event that has something for everyone: food, live music, workshops, a costume contest, face painting, board gaming, D&D, and much more. We have been very fortunate to have found so many volunteers in the community to help with the project.

“It is really that community that makes this and other events possible. We are all geeks at heart here at Sewell Mill and look forward to sharing that experience with the public.”

All events are free and open to all ages. The Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center is located at 2051 Lower Roswell Road.

On Friday and Saturday, the work of the Bard comes to Sandy Plains Road, but it will be something of a bittersweet event. William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” is being presented at The Art Place (3330 Sandy Plains Road).

The shows, which start at 7:30 each night, will be the last for the Different Drum Theatrics group. The student-focused outfit is “closing up shop with heavy hearts” due to a lack of participants.

Bradley's Car Show
Classic cars will be on display Sunday at Bradley’s Bar & Grill.

Ticket prices are $12 at the door and $13 if you’re using a credit card.

From 3-7 Sunday, Bradley’s Bar & Grill (4961 Lower Roswell Road, French Quarter Shopping Center) is holding its 2nd annual Car Show. This year, the beneficiary is the Orphan Annie Animal Rescue organization. There will be food, live music, classic cars and games and prizes.

The 181st Marietta Campmeeting is winding down this weekend, with 11 a.m. services Friday-Sunday and 7:30 p.m. services on Friday and Saturday. The Marietta Campground is located at 2300 Roswell Road, and overflow parking is available across the street at East Cobb United Methodist Church. The services are free to all.
