East Marietta Little League opening celebration postponed

It’s going to be a bit chilly Saturday morning—just above freezing, according to the local weather forecast—and as a result the East Marietta Little League has postponed its opening day festivities.East Marietta Little League

They were supposed to take place at 9 a.m. Saturday at Sewell Park, but the event has been pushed back to the same time, the same place, next Saturday, March 7.

Saturday’s first slate of games is still scheduled to go on. By later Saturday morning, we’re expecting sunshine with high temperatures nearing 50.

The Little League season starts Friday and Saturday for East Side Baseball at Fullers Park and on Saturday for Sandy Plains Baseball at Carl Harrison Park and Sweat Mountain Park.

East Marietta’s Opening Day event includes special guests, team introductions and a ceremonial first pitch.

Next Saturday is projected to be warmer, in the high 50s.

East Cobb Weekend Events: Polar Bear Run; Pope Band Recycling; Walton Chorus Fashion Show; GSO Concert; and more

From dawn to dusk on Saturday, this weekend’s East Cobb leading events on Saturday offer something for everyone.

It’s to be cold all day and all evening, led off by the 31st annual Polar Bear Run at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church (955 Johnson Ferry Road), which starts around 8 a.m. and raises funds for the church’s music mission trip. The race is one of the first local qualifiers for the Peachtree Road Race, but there are shorter races for kids, including a “Cub Run” for those ages 4-5;

Doing some winter reorganizing and cleaning out? Haul unwanted items over to Pope High School (3001 Hembree Road) between 9-4 for the Pope Band Recycling Day. The cost is $10 a car and additional charges apply for electronics and paint;

Professional organizer Linda Diamond offers tips on Decluttering Your Home from 11-12 Saturday at the East Cobb Library (4880 Lower Roswell Road);

The sun’s supposed to come out, warming things up enough for some youth sports activity. The Sandy Plains Softball Fun Day takes place from 12-2 at the organization’s fields at 2977 Gordy Parkway, and they’ll have food, fun, prizes and walk-up registration for the spring season.

Not far way, Sandy Plains Baseball is holding Instructional Clinics at Harrison Park (2653 Shallowford Road) from 11-1 for ages 9-12, and at Sweat Mountain Park (4346 Steinhauer Road) from 2:30 p.m. for ages 5-8. All participants should bring a glove, bat and helmet and arrive at least 20 minutes beforehand;

The arts take center stage Saturday night (and indoors too!). The Walton Chorus Fashion Show is themed “Reaching for the Stars,” and it’s a fundraiser that costs $18 at the door. Showtime Saturday is 6 p.m. at the Walton auditorium (1590 Bill Murdock Road);

The Georgia Symphony Orchestra will performs a “Musical Mirrors Concert” at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Lassiter Concert Hall (2601 Shallowford Road, photo above). Works by Franz Schubert are featured, and the ticket prices range from $10-$25.

East Cobb youth baseball and softball registration

Several youth baseball and softball organizations in East Cobb are conducting registration now, and over the next couple weeks will have clinics and other events to get ready for the spring season.

On Friday, the East Marietta National Little League will hold its 3rd annual Baseball Bash at D-BAT (1666 Roswell Road) from 6-8 p.m., with games, pizza and a visit from former Chicago Cub Corey Patterson. You can sign up your kids on-site as well.

Registration continues at the East Marietta spring evaluations Feb. 2 at Sewell Park (2055 Lower Roswell Road). It’s not being billed as a tryout but a way to provide for competitive play at all levels; more at the EMNLL website;

On Saturday is the Sandy Plains Softball Fun Day, with walk-up registration, from 12-2 at the organzation’s fields at 2977 Gordy Parkway. Food, games, raffle prizes and other activities will take place; visit the SPSA website for more;

Not far way, Sandy Plains Baseball Instructional Clinics will take place at two locations on Saturady. The first is for ages 9-12 from 11-1 at Harrison Park (2653 Shallowford Road), and the other is from 2-3:30 for ages 5-8 at Sweat Mountain Park (4346 Steinhauer Road). Registration also is underway for East Side Baseball, which also has skills evals on Saturday, and Terrell Mill Softball.

Sandy Plains Prowlers baseball team reaches finals of Cooperstown tournament

In the days before former Atlanta Braves star Chipper Jones was preparing for his Baseball Hall of Fame induction, the Sandy Plains Prowlers baseball team was there, in Cooperstown, N.Y., participating in the Cooperstown Dreams Park baseball tournament.

Team manager Mike Tamucci got in touch with us to share the information below and the photos from the Prowlers’ run through the 104-team tournament.

They were runners-up, playing before 2,000 fans at the Little Majors Stadium in Cooperstown. He says it’s “the pinnacle of the 12-year-old travel baseball season.”

Here’s more from Mike explaining how the Cooperstown tourney unfolded for the Prowlers between July 20-27:

The Prowlers went 6-0 in pool play and outscored their opponents, 104-11, against teams from six different states, to earn the number one seed. On championship Thursday, the Prowlers won four-straight games and hit 18 home runs to beat the 32-seed from New Jersey, 17-seed from Maryland, 8-seed from California, and 5-seed from Wisconsin. In the semifinals, the Prowlers overcame a four-run deficit in the bottom of the fifth and scored 11 runs, including three-straight home runs, to earn the victory. For the tournament, the Prowlers hit 38 home runs and outscored their opponents, 157-22.

The Prowlers were the first team from Sandy Plains Baseball to earn a number one seed and play in the championship game in the 32-year history of Cooperstown Dreams Park. The Prowlers finish the season with a record of 65-11 and five tournament championships.

EAST COBB WEEKEND EVENTS: Little League opening day; Teen Tech Expo; Kell Band 5K; Murderino movie and more

The rain is gone and we’ll be splashed with plenty of sunshine (albeit with cooler temperatures) during the first weekend in March. Fittingly enough, it’s also the official start of the season for two local youth baseball organizations. More below about those, and other East Cobb weekend events:

  • Run With a Longhorn 5K: The first-ever race is a fundraiser for the Kell High School band, and it gets underway at 8 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the school (4770 Lee Waters Road). After you stretch your legs, enjoy food, vendors and fellow members of Longhorn Nation. Walk-up registration is $35;
  • East Side Baseball Opening Day: Saturday morning should also be great weather for a parade, starting at 8:50 a.m., followed by food, raffle prizes (including a golf cart) and the first games of the season at Fullers Park (3499 Robinson Road);
  • Sandy Plains Baseball is also swinging into action Saturday, with festivities starting at noon at Sweat Mountain Park (4346 Steinhauer Road);
  • The Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center (2051 Lower Roswell Road) continues its Murderino Movie series from 11-1 Saturday with “Reversal of Fortune,” about the notorious Sunny von Bülow case. Bring your own food and drink if you like to the black box theater, and get a pre-film presentation. Rated R, for adults only;
  • East Cobb Library (4880 Lower Roswell Road) is holding a Teen Tech Expo from 1-4 Saturday to kick off Teen Tech Week. The link contains other related events during the week at the East Cobb, Sewell Mill, Gritters and Mountain View branches if you can’t make the expo;
  • On Sunday, St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church (571 Holt Road) continues its free musical series with the Feiner Musicke Concert from 4-6. The husband and wife duo of tenor Mel Foster and harpist Ellen Heinecke Foster will perform inspirational music from the Art Song traditions of Europe and America.

East Cobb youth baseball registration underway through January

It’s bitterly cold as 2018 begins, so it doesn’t feel much like baseball season, but time is running out for East Cobb youth baseball registration.

Registration continues through Jan. 28 for the East Marietta National Little League, which will have player evaluations Feb. 3, followed by the start of practices Feb. 10 and the Opening Day celebration at Sewell Park on March 10.East Cobb youth baseball registration

At East Side Baseball, the online registration deadline is this coming Sunday, Jan. 7, with a late fee applying after that. Evaluations start during the month, on Jan. 20, with the season starting on March 3 and the rookie season following on March 17.

Registration for the recreational season at the Sandy Plains Baseball Association concludes on Jan. 25 at 9 p.m., with late fees applying after that. More details here about fees and age groups. Evaluations start on March 3.
