East Cobb celebrity poker fundraiser nets $20K for Emory ALS research

East Cobb celebrity poker fundraiser

Real estate agent Janice Overbeck and former Atlanta Falcons player Terance Mathis were the hosts of a celebrity poker fundraiser for Emory ALS last weekend in East Cobb.

Here’s more on the event per a release from the Janice Overbeck Real Estate Team:

A little over one hundred attendees joined together to try their luck in the tournament while raising funds through a silent auction and awareness for Lou Gehrig’s disease. Other local celebrities such as Mark Lee from the band Third Day, Michael Reid (NFL), and Corey Patterson (MLB) came to support the cause and play in the tournament with local fans and event goers.

Through donations, silent auction, and raffle tickets sold, the event raised $20,472 presented to Dr. Jonathan Glass of the Emory ALS Reach Center.

Since its inception in 2016, the Janice Overbeck Real Estate Team’s non-profit, JO Gives, Inc., has hosted fundraising events in addition to making donations to the Emory University ALS Research Center annually.

“After losing my father to ALS in 2015, I have been very passionate about research and finding a cure for this horrible disease. Additional funding is extremely important to better understand the disease and determine possible risk factors. Though research has advanced over the last several years to help m any ALS patients live longer and more productive lives, there is still a lot of work to be done,” says Overbeck.

For more information on current research and clinical trials for ALS or to make a donation please visit the Emory ALS Research Center website.

Press release:

Recently, Cobb Animal Services announced an exciting partnership with the Homeless Pet Clubs of America and the Cobb County Police Department. The partnership will help further awareness for dogs and cats who are homeless, but also teaches children empathy which leads to a reduction of bullying in schools.

Together, they are aiming to implement the clubs in all Cobb County schools and centers such as Cobb Senior Services and local libraries. To kick off the partnership, a pet adoption and fundraising launch party took place on Thursday, September 20th at Red Sky Tapas & Bar at 1255 Johnson Ferry Road in Marietta. Cobb County Commissioners, County Manager, Rob Hosack, and local citizens came together to enjoy live music and support this benefit.

Local businesses such as the Janice Overbeck Real Estate Team, Chick-fil-A East Lake, Glory Haus, Aroma Ridge Coffee, and 180 Your Life generously contributed items for a silent auction and Red Sky donated a percentage of sales.

The evening raised a total of $1,680 for Animal Society of Cobb, Inc. which is the 501(c)(3) arm for Cobb County Animal Services. For more information on how you can help homeless pets, visit www.homelesspetclubs.org.

East Cobb realtor holds wine event fundraiser for World Vision

Press release:

The Janice Overbeck Real Estate Team’s non-profit organization, JO Gives, hosted their second annual wine event last Friday, March 23. JO Gives is considerably involved with World Vision and this year, our goal is to raise enough money to put two water wells in Africa. The event was a huge success and $2,452 was raised in just a few hours! An auction was held where participants bidded on a sparkly bottle of brut champagne, plenty of games were played on the patio outside and a variety of wine bottles and gift sets were displayed for sale. Not only did they raise almost double the amount compared to last year, but the event also enabled the agents and staff to mingle with and familiarize themselves with current and past clients. We’ve all heard the phrase “Jesus turned water into wine”…. Well, the Janice Overbeck Real Estate Team is determined to turn wine into water.

EAST COBB WEEKEND: Dog Days Run; Pins for Paws; real estate seminar; new Walton HS open house & more

Walton High School

Because one school ribbon-cutting event this week isn’t enough (and also, because it’s right before the start of a new school year): The new Walton High School administration and classroom building will be officially opened on Sunday, starting with ribbon-cutting ceremonies at 1:30 p.m. and an Open House to follow (1590 Bill Murdock Road).

The next day, students will finally get to enjoy some elbow room as they start classes in a building that can better accommodate them. Having been subject to massive overcrowding myself (as a Wheeler student when Walton opened, too many years ago), I understand the feeling. We’ll be out there on Sunday to document all the proceedings.

The Walton ribbon-cutting comes at the end of a busy and varied weekend of events in East Cobb. See our full calendar listings for so much more, and send yours along if you don’t see it to: calendar@eastcobbnews.com). We’ve pulled out a few highlights here:

  • The Rotary Club of East Cobb is holding its 12th annual Dog Days Run that starts at 7:30 Saturday morning at the McCleskey-East Cobb YMCA (1055 East Piedmont Road), and race-day registration is available for both the 5K and fun run;
  • The East Cobb-based Good Mews Animal Foundation is holding a bowling fundraiser Sunday from 2-4 at AMF Bowling on Cobb Parkway. Pins for Paws includes lots of related fun, including raffle tickets;
  • If you’re thinking of buying a home for the first time, the Janice Overbeck Real Estate team is holding a free seminar from 11-1 Saturday at its Keller Williams North Atlanta office at 2249 Roswell Road;
  • At the end of a long week why not enjoy some Open Mic entertainment? From 7-10 p.m. Sunday at Keegan’s Irish Pub (4401 Shallowford Road), the local acoustic duo The Woodys (who were in action earlier this week at the Paper Mill Village food truck) will perform your requests. Sign-up starts at 6:30 p.m.

Did we miss something? Do you not see an event you think the community ought to know about? Let us know if you have calendar items to share, for this weekend and beyond. We’re working to have the best calendar listings in East Cobb, so have a look around and let us know what you think!

Have a great weekend, and stay in touch!
