GAgives local non-profit fundraiser designated for Tuesday

Gagives fundraiser

Submitted information on the upcoming GAgives fundraiser that benefits a number of non-profits, including the Good Mews Animal Foundation and the Tommy Nobis Center of East Cobb:

GAgives on GivingTuesday, the record-setting fundraising event for our state’s nonprofits, returns this Tuesday, December 1st, as part of the international generosity movement that culminates each year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

Just like the communities they serve, Georgia nonprofits are in greater need than ever. Fortunately, Georgians are poised to make a difference: During our COVID-relief event this spring, 7,260 individuals jumped in on short notice to contributing a total of more than $1.2 Million.

Every dollar can make a difference, from providing free food in an economic crunch to caring for seniors in a time of extreme vulnerability to rescuing animals, preserving the arts and the environment, educating our children, and much more. There are thousands of nonprofits taking part in this year’s initiative, including many based in and serving Metro Atlanta communities.

As always, this event is hosted by the Georgia Center for Nonprofits and a range of corporate and media partners (see below). Once again, a range of sponsors have funded prizes for the nonprofits with the most unique donors over the full day and during designated “power hours,” helping nonprofits engage their supporters’ competitive spirit – another way that every dollar makes a difference.

You’ll find more details about this year’s #GAgives campaign here.The full list of participants is available here.

The Good Mews 30th birthday celebration that was open to the public on Sunday is part of a month-long promotion that includes special prices on adoptions and the unveiling of the cat shelter’s new surgical facilities.

The cage-free, no-kill Good Mews opened in 1988 in its founder’s apartment, then to a location on Sandtown Road before moving to East Cobb. After many years at the Fountains of Olde Towne Shopping Center, the non-profit Good Mews Animal Foundation built a free-standing building on the site of a former pet day care center at 3805 Robinson Road that has been its home since late 2015.

In that time, it’s adopted out more than 8,000 cats who were once homeless, abandoned, abused, rescued or neglected. The Good Mews mission is “Finding Good Homes for Good Kitties.”

The expansive space in the free-standing building is home to around 100 cats and kittens, with a few dozen more typically out in foster homes at any given time.

Good Mews takes in cats from a number of kill shelters in north Georgia and prepares them for adoption. All are given medical screenings and some require separate rooms for medical, dietary or behavioral reasons.

Cats needing medical attention had been sent to nearby veterinarians, but Good Mews recently has been able to create its own on-premises surgical facility that includes donated ultrasound and X-Ray machines. The shelter also will be able to spay and neuter cats and provide teeth cleanings as well.

Dr. Judy Johnson is a contract veterinarian who will be leading the medical unit on-site. In addition to saving money, Good Mews will be able to better provide continuity of care.

Recently Good Mews began a Yoga with Cats program and a Reading to Cats program.

For the month of June, to mark its 30th birthday, Good Mews is adopting out adult cats at a reduced rate of $30. It’s also accepting in-kind donations of supplies like litter, food, cleaners and more on a regular basis.

Adoptions take place from 10-4 each Saturday and the second, third and fourth Sundays of each month from 1-4.

EAST COBB WEEKEND: Dog Days Run; Pins for Paws; real estate seminar; new Walton HS open house & more

Walton High School

Because one school ribbon-cutting event this week isn’t enough (and also, because it’s right before the start of a new school year): The new Walton High School administration and classroom building will be officially opened on Sunday, starting with ribbon-cutting ceremonies at 1:30 p.m. and an Open House to follow (1590 Bill Murdock Road).

The next day, students will finally get to enjoy some elbow room as they start classes in a building that can better accommodate them. Having been subject to massive overcrowding myself (as a Wheeler student when Walton opened, too many years ago), I understand the feeling. We’ll be out there on Sunday to document all the proceedings.

The Walton ribbon-cutting comes at the end of a busy and varied weekend of events in East Cobb. See our full calendar listings for so much more, and send yours along if you don’t see it to: calendar@eastcobbnews.com). We’ve pulled out a few highlights here:

  • The Rotary Club of East Cobb is holding its 12th annual Dog Days Run that starts at 7:30 Saturday morning at the McCleskey-East Cobb YMCA (1055 East Piedmont Road), and race-day registration is available for both the 5K and fun run;
  • The East Cobb-based Good Mews Animal Foundation is holding a bowling fundraiser Sunday from 2-4 at AMF Bowling on Cobb Parkway. Pins for Paws includes lots of related fun, including raffle tickets;
  • If you’re thinking of buying a home for the first time, the Janice Overbeck Real Estate team is holding a free seminar from 11-1 Saturday at its Keller Williams North Atlanta office at 2249 Roswell Road;
  • At the end of a long week why not enjoy some Open Mic entertainment? From 7-10 p.m. Sunday at Keegan’s Irish Pub (4401 Shallowford Road), the local acoustic duo The Woodys (who were in action earlier this week at the Paper Mill Village food truck) will perform your requests. Sign-up starts at 6:30 p.m.

Did we miss something? Do you not see an event you think the community ought to know about? Let us know if you have calendar items to share, for this weekend and beyond. We’re working to have the best calendar listings in East Cobb, so have a look around and let us know what you think!

Have a great weekend, and stay in touch!
