East Cobb Lions Club recognized for 60th anniversary

From the office of Cobb Commissioner JoAnn  Birrell, who recognized the East Cobb Lions Club at Tuesday’s meeting:

The East Cobb Lions Club has a legacy of service that spans 60 years! They received their charter July 14, 1958 from the Lions Clubs International to serve the eastern portions of Cobb County. The East Cobb Lions have conducted fundraisers of every kind and have worked tirelessly to benefit the citizens of East Cobb and Cobb County. 

Their efforts over the past 60 years helped lead the expansion of the Cobb County Library System and they have been vigilant in providing eye exams and glasses for countless children and adults.

The East Cobb Lions’ work is not limited to services in Georgia for they have provided training and dog guides which restore independence and mobility through Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester Hills, MI and Southeastern Guide Dogs in Palmetto, FL.

As part of their greater mission they support Lions Clubs International Foundation which provides disaster relief both within our state and internationally and works to eradicate measles and preventable causes of blindness throughout the world.

For the last 34 years, the East Cobb Lions Club also has delivered Meals on Wheels on Christmas Day to needy families throughout Cobb County.

Lions Club vision screenings include East Cobb Library date in September

We posted earlier this week about free eye exams and glasses for Brumby Elementary School students. The Cobb County Public Library announced this week that the Lions Club will have some vision screenings for the general public in September, including one at the East Cobb Library.Lions Club vision screenings

That screening on Sept. 21 will be conducted by the East Cobb Lions Club, which will be at Brumby later this fall and does many screenings at Cobb schools.

Here’s more about the screenings from Thomas Brooks at the library system, who says the screenings are for adults and children six months and older, and that walk-ins are encouraged:

Lions Club volunteers use a screening device to detect possible vision issues that require follow-up professional care. Vision issues have a significant impact on quality of life, including children’s success in school and injury risks for all ages.

Lions Club volunteers are providing Vision Screening events in September as part of Cobb County Public Libraries’ Falls Prevention Awareness Initiative.

The costs due to falls injuries are substantial for Cobb families, a major national healthcare burden and public safety challenge. The average hospital cost is more than $30,000 for a fall injury, according to the CDC. Reports by the Georgia Department of Public Health show about 10,000 emergency room visits by Cobb residents each year due to fall injuries.

Another East Cobb entity that provides free health care assistance announced today the renewal of another popular event. The Mansouri Family Dental Care practice on Lower Roswell Road said its annual free dental exams will take place on Nov. 10.

For several years the Mansouris have enlisted volunteer dentists to provide exam for those in  need. We’ll have more details when we get them.

EAST COBB THIS WEEK: Summer library events; tax millage town hall; blood drive; business luncheons; greenways and trails meeting

It’s not quite back to school—though it is hard to believe that’s exactly two weeks from today, on July 31—and the four branches of the Cobb County Public Library System in East Cobb have plenty of activities scheduled for the next two weeks.

We’ve included a good sampling of them in our East Cobb Events Calendar, and there are plenty more to peruse on the library system website. In addition to regular storytimes, this week’s events include a picnic at the Mountain View Regional branch, monthly adult book discussion groups at East Marietta and East Cobb, the monthly Gritters STEAM team event and so much more!

On Saturday, the East Cobb branch will feature a presentation on how to grow your own mushroom garden, with some expert advice from the Mushroom Club of Georgia.

Cobb Commission Chairman Mike Boyce is taking some heat for proposing a tax millage increase, and on Wednesday he is holding a town hall meeting at the East Cobb Senior Center to solicit more input.

The Cobb school board is holding a final public hearing Thursday before voting on setting its tax millage rate for 2017.

The East Cobb Business Association and Northeast Cobb Business Association are holding their monthly luncheons on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. On Wednesday, the Ashley Homestore on Roswell Road is holding a Red Cross blood drive, and the East Cobb Lions Club will be offering free vision screenings.

If you missed last week’s public input meeting on the Cobb Greenways and Trails Master Plan at East Cobb Library, there will be another meeting Tuesday from 5-6:30 at the Covenant Presbyterian Church, Canton Road and Piedmont Road.

Another end-of-summer event for kids takes place Thursday at Terrell Mill Park. The Fairy House Workshop, presented by the Cobb Water System’s Watershed Stewardship Program, includes story-reading before kids ages 3-13 create their own fairy houses.

The Marietta Campmeeting continues every day this week through Saturday, with services at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. and an ice cream social after Tuesday’s evening service, starting at 9:30 p.m. The final service takes place at 11 a.m. Sunday.
