EAST COBB WEEKEND EVENTS: Native plant sale; Holocaust exhibit; Spoken Word Show; library events

Spring break is winding down, but spring weather is just getting into swing. East Cobb weekend events over the next few days include the first of several plant sales and garden tours in the community during the season, as well as a lot of kid-focused activities at library branches as they conclude their week away from school:

  • Georgia Native Plant Society Spring Plant Sale: The lush grounds at McFarlane Nature Park (280 Farm Road) provide the backdrop from 10-2 Saturday. Admission is free, and parking is on the back pasture. Related events in East Cobb in April include two by the Cobb Master Gardeners, a free azaleas and wildflower tour next Thursday at the Wright Environmental Education Center and its garden fair and plant sale April 20-21 at East Cobb Park;
  • A month-long Holocaust exhibition, “In Her Father’s Eyes,” started this week at the East Cobb Library (4880 Lower Roswell Road) and continues Monday-Saturday from 11-6 through May 2. It’s the story of Kitty Weichherz, a Czech girl born in the same year as Anne Frank, and told through family photographs and the diary of her father, who survived the Sobibór death camp. Holocaust Remembrance Day is next Thursday, April 12;
  • On Friday, kids 8 and under can enjoy Friday Flicks from 3-5 at the Mountain View Regional Library (3320 Sandy Plains Road). The story of “Lorax” is about a grumpy but charming creature who fights to protect his world. From 7-9 on Friday, teens are invited to the black box theater at the Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center (2051 Lower Roswell Road) for “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.” Four teens plot their escape from a magical video game;
  • Murderino Movies return from 11-1 Saturday at Sewell Mill with a screening of the “Cat’s Meow,” but this one’s adults-only. Like all black box theater events, participants can bring their own food and drink;
  • Also at Sewell Mill, from 2-4 Saturday, is the “Spoken Word Show,” in honor of National Poetry Month. An open mic starts at 2, and at 3 local featured performers Derrick Standifer, Wanesha Spencer, and Justin Patton will take the stage. This event is for all ages, and book and album signings will follow the show;
  • At the Mountain View branch, kids can learn how to build a chair made only out of newspapers from 3-5 Saturday, but participants will need to register;
  • At the East Cobb Library on Saturday, a Teen STEAM Virtual Reality Roller Coasters session takes place from 3:30-5:15, and you’ll need to sign up.

East Cobb This Week: Library events; new Pope gym opens; tree recycling

It’s the first business day of 2018, and while Cobb schools don’t get back into session until Thursday, there’s plenty to do in East Cobb during the first full week of the new year.

Many of those activities will be at public libraries, including the new Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center (2051 Lower Roswell Road), which is having an orientation session from 7-8 tonight that includes a chance to sign up for classes, as well as film screenings and other special events later in the week.

On Thursday “The Adventures of Robin Hood” classic film screening takes place from 2-4 at Sewell Mill.

Also on Thursday, at the East Cobb Library (4880 Lower Roswell Road), there will be a screening of “The Return of the Pink Panther” from 1-3, that’s part of the Movie Matinee Club. The East Cobb branch also will be having a senior Tai Chi Wellness Class from 11:30-12:30 that requires registration.

On Saturday is the first of the “Murderino” murder-mystery film screenings at Sewell Mill. “The Night of the Hunter” will be shown from 11-1.

Also on Saturday, Sewell Mill will be holding an Introduction to Podcasting session from 2-5, with speakers from the Podcast Atlanta collaborative. The event also includes a podcast-ready microphone that will be raffled off.

A new regular event begins Thursday at the Mountain View Regional Library (3320 Sandy Plains Road), and it’s for knitting, crocheting and related crafting devotees. “I’d Rather Be Stitching” is a weekly drop-in session from 1-3.

Also at Mountain View on Saturday is an art event for middle and high school students. “#TeenSpace Light Painting” goes from 2-4 and you’ll need to register for this one-time workshop.

Saturday is the day to get your Christmas tree recycled through Keep Cobb Beautiful’s “Bring One for the Chipper” event. Drop off your trees at Fullers Park or Noonday Creek Park or two Home Depot locations between 9-4 and get free mulch in exchange.

Also on Saturday, Pope High School (3001 Hembree Road) will christen its new gymnasium with a community ribbon-cuttting ceremony at 3:15 p.m., followed by varsity basketball games starting at 4 p.m. between the Greyhounds girls and Chattahoochee High School, and the boys tipping off at 6 p.m.

Upcoming library events in East Cobb: ‘Mindful Meditation’ series, adult book clubs & more

The ‘Mindfulness Meditation’ sessions this fall at East Cobb Library are part of the “Build A Better You” adult program.

Starting on Wednesday, East Cobb Library (Parkaire Landing, 4880 Lower Roswell Road) will be holding a four-part series for adults this fall called “Mindfulness Meditation” (ECN calendar listing here) that’s part of the “Build A Better You” program. It’s one of many library events in East Cobb in September that’s gearing up for patrons of all ages.

The sessions are the first Wednesday of each month, starting at 11:30 a.m. and lasting until 12:30 p.m. and registration is required (call 770-509-2730. The other dates are Oct. 4, Nov. 8, and Dec. 6.

This is an introductory meditation class aimed at helping reduce stress and increase awareness. Here’s more about the program, taught by instructor Lisa Wellstead:

It is based on the core principles found within Jon Kabat-Zinn’s “Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction” course (MBSR) and Mark Williams’ “Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy” course (MBCT). Both MBSR and MBCT are well-researched and evidence-based mindfulness programs. These sessions are offered free of charge as part of a Wellness series in collaboration with local instructors at the East Cobb Library this fall.

Also on Wednesday, the monthly meeting of the Page-Turners Book Club takes place starting at 10:15 a.m. at the Mountain View Regional Library (3320 Sandy Plains Road). This month’s book is “Between, Georgia,” the new book by Atlanta novelist Joshilyn Jackson. Future book selections for the fall are listed here; you need to register by calling the MVRL’s adult reference desk at  770-509-2725.

Adult reading clubs also meet monthly at the Gritters Library (Sept. 12), at the East Marietta Library (Sept. 20) and at the East Cobb Library (Sept. 21, morning and afternoon sessions).

In addition to the usual storytime sessions for children, there are Tai Chi sessions, family movies and, on Sept. 25 at Mountain View, another Cobb Cooks Book Club and Potluck event.

Another special program of note, regarding the quality of the public water supply: Kathy Nguyen of the Cobb County Water Efficiency Program will speak at the East Cobb Library Sept. 26 in “Water, Water, Everywhere?,”  which includes the latest updates on drought conditions, ongoing Georgia-Alabama-Florida water issues and more.

Like all library programs, this one is also free, but registration is recommended by calling 770-509-2730 so enough informational handouts can be printed.

EAST COBB THIS WEEK: Summer library events; tax millage town hall; blood drive; business luncheons; greenways and trails meeting

It’s not quite back to school—though it is hard to believe that’s exactly two weeks from today, on July 31—and the four branches of the Cobb County Public Library System in East Cobb have plenty of activities scheduled for the next two weeks.

We’ve included a good sampling of them in our East Cobb Events Calendar, and there are plenty more to peruse on the library system website. In addition to regular storytimes, this week’s events include a picnic at the Mountain View Regional branch, monthly adult book discussion groups at East Marietta and East Cobb, the monthly Gritters STEAM team event and so much more!

On Saturday, the East Cobb branch will feature a presentation on how to grow your own mushroom garden, with some expert advice from the Mushroom Club of Georgia.

Cobb Commission Chairman Mike Boyce is taking some heat for proposing a tax millage increase, and on Wednesday he is holding a town hall meeting at the East Cobb Senior Center to solicit more input.

The Cobb school board is holding a final public hearing Thursday before voting on setting its tax millage rate for 2017.

The East Cobb Business Association and Northeast Cobb Business Association are holding their monthly luncheons on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. On Wednesday, the Ashley Homestore on Roswell Road is holding a Red Cross blood drive, and the East Cobb Lions Club will be offering free vision screenings.

If you missed last week’s public input meeting on the Cobb Greenways and Trails Master Plan at East Cobb Library, there will be another meeting Tuesday from 5-6:30 at the Covenant Presbyterian Church, Canton Road and Piedmont Road.

Another end-of-summer event for kids takes place Thursday at Terrell Mill Park. The Fairy House Workshop, presented by the Cobb Water System’s Watershed Stewardship Program, includes story-reading before kids ages 3-13 create their own fairy houses.

The Marietta Campmeeting continues every day this week through Saturday, with services at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. and an ice cream social after Tuesday’s evening service, starting at 9:30 p.m. The final service takes place at 11 a.m. Sunday.
