East Cobb restaurant update: Los Bravos opens on Johnson Ferry Road

Los Bravos Johnson Ferry Road

Last week the Los Bravos Mexican Restaurant group relocated a second location in East Cobb, in the spot formerly occupied by Zeal (1255 Johnson Ferry Road, in the Market Plaza Shopping Center), after moving it from 1360 Powers Ferry Road.

That’s where the MarketPlace Terrell Mill development is slated to go, and what was called Los Bravos #1 closed in January.

Los Bravos has been open since April 7 on Johnson Ferry, and the hours are the same as the old place—11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., seven days a week. There’s not a website for now, but the phone is 770-916-1776.

Those are the same hours for the other nearby Los Bravos restaurant, at 2125 Roswell Road, in the East Lake Shopping Center.

More openings . . .

Also now open, at the Pavilions at East Lake (2100 Roswell Road, Suite 2114) is Kayhill’s Sports Bar and Grill, adjacent to the J. Christopher’s.

Plans have been in the works for several months by former Marietta Billiard Club owner James Kayhill to open another sports bar-themed spot with billiards and poker tables and dart boards, along with big screen TVs.

Live entertainment is coming soon. The menu includes daily specials and extensive beer, wine and cocktail selections, and there’s a daily Happy Hour from 2-7 pm.

. . . and a grand reopening

The Chick-fil-A at Woodlawn Square opened this morning, as we’ve noted several times over the months it was closed for remodeling. The hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

Coming attractions

From the ICYMI files, just across the Woodlawn Square parking lot will soon mark the return of Mellow Mushroom to the Johnson Ferry Road corridor. We don’t have an estimated time of opening yet, but will post that as soon as we find out.

Before you head out to eat . . .

Update: Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square reopening slated for January

Chick fil A Woodlawn Square reopening

After getting some reader inquiries about the subject, we’ve got an answer to a question we’ve heard asked a lot in recent weeks: The Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square reopening (1201 Johnson Ferry Road) is set for January.

That’s the word we got from Chick-fil-A representative Callie Bowers, who said there isn’t a specific date that’s been determined but is likely in the range of early- to mid-January.

The location has been closed since July for the construction of a new building and parking lot, including a double drive-through. When it closed, company officials were hoping to reopen in November.

When we last drove by a week or so ago, the new building was nearly completed, but everything around it is a pile of mud and dirt.

In the meantime, employment applications are being accepted for anyone aged 16 and older.

Bowers said there will be a full grand reopening schedule of activities.

Scene in East Cobb: Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square construction site

Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square

It’s all come down. Bulldozers have just about cleared what was left of the old Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square location on Johnson Ferry Road.

The construction site has been fenced off as work continues to build a new store that includes a double drive-through lane and a reconfigured parking lot.

The popular fast-food restaurant has been closed since July 6 and is scheduled to reopen in November, but a specific date hasn’t been announced.

Traffic in and out of the shopping center hasn’t been altered, as the construction vehicles (thus far, at least) have fit onto the work site.

Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square closing July 6; Board and Brush opening July 14

Woodlawn Square Chick-fil-A

The countdown is underway for the closing of the Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square, which is Friday, July 6.

As we noted previously, the location at 1201 Johnson Ferry Road is undergoing a major renovation that will have it shuttered until around November, but there’s not a specific reopening date.

The store’s got a remodeling countdown on its Facebook page that began on Wednesday, 10 days out.

A few days after that closure, and just a few feet away, is the grand opening of the East Cobb location of Board and Brush, a DIY wood sign workshop that will offer classes, supplies and more.

The grand opening is next Saturday, July 14, from 10-12. The store is 1205 Johnson Ferry, Suite 103. There’s not outside signage up yet, but the space is adjacent to the now-closed Muss & Turner’s restaurant.

Occasional updates are posted on its Facebook page.

Minor modifications made to Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square renovations

On Monday District 2 Cobb Commissioner Bob Ott signed off on minor modifications for the architecture and canopy for Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square renovations that will begin in July.

As we noted in December, commissioners approved the restaurant’s expansion plans in December that include a double drive-through with a canopy and subject to final approval from the district commissioner.

That’s standard practice on most zoning and site plan cases that come before the commissioners. What they’re not required to do is explain what modifications they make after the cases are approved.

Earlier this spring Ott said he would publicly post any minor modifications and any other sign-offs on zoning cases online and in his weekly newsletter:

This will allow you, and your neighbors, the opportunity to review the request and to see what changes are being proposed and to provide feedback to Commissioner Ott. Commissioner Ott will review the feedback that has been provided, make possible changes and will sign the document the following week.

The canopy and architectural renderings, as modified at the Woodlawn Chick-fil-A, can be found here. The changes pertain to side and rear elevation specifics of the canopy.

As we noted in March, the busy restaurant is closing in July for the renovations and is expected to reopen in November.

Report: East Cobb Chick-fil-A to close in July for renovations

Chick Fil A Woodlawn canopy rendering

Back in December we reported on expansion plans for an East Cobb Chick-fil-A store that would include a double drive-through and reconfigure the parking lot at the Woodlawn Square location (1201 Johnson Ferry Road).

That renovation will require several months to complete, according to a report published Tuesday at tonetoatl.com, which said the location will close July 9 for a complete rebuild. It is expected to reopen in November.

Interplan LLC, which operates the Woodlawn Square store, needed to get rezoning for an additional parcel .15 acres at the shopping center to accommodate the expansion request, in addition to site plan amendments approved by the Cobb Board of Commissioners.

Those changes include a canopy at the drive-through order stations. The operator also agreed to limit the use of construction vehicles to the shopping center parking lot, permitting no parking on Johnson Ferry Road during the renovation project.

The double drive-through lanes will wind around the back of the Chick-fil-A, and the extra land will be used to create additional parking.

The tonetoatl.com report said a similar Chick-fil-A renovation project will take place on South Cobb Drive and will last as long.

Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square expansion plans approved by Cobb commissioners

Chick Fil A Woodlawn canopy rendering

The construction of a double drive-through at the Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square store in East Cobb was approved at Tuesday’s Cobb Board of Commissioners zoning hearing.

The rezoning request was approved 4-0 by the commissioners on their consent agenda. Interplan LLC, which operates the Chick-Fil-A store at 1201 Johnson Ferry Road, wants to reconfigure the parking lot to accommodate the expansion, and needed to convert a parcel of .15 of an acre from community retail to neighborhood shopping (previous East Cobb News post here).

The drivethrough plans include a canopy, as shown in the above rendering, the design of which, as well as other architectural renderings, must be approved by District 2 commissioner Bob Ott.

Other conditions include limiting construction vehicles to the Chick-fil-A site, and not allowing them to be parked along Johnson Ferry Road and Woodlawn Parkway while the renovations are in progress.

Commission chairman Mike Boyce recused himself from the vote, saying he frequently attends a men’s group meeting at the Chick-fil-A.

Zoning cases that do not generate opposition are commonly placed on the consent agenda and are voted on collectively.

The commissioners also voted 5-0 to approve a rezoning request by Walton Riverbend (previous East Cobb News post here). The rezoning was necessary for the developer to relocate its headquarters to the 46-acre Walton on the Chattahoochee residential site on Akers Mill Road.

The application is for a master plan for the Walton Riverbend office, as well as stipulations to guide a future mixed-use development that would keep an existing 26-unit residential building, and allow for new office buildings totaling 16,800 square feet.

“The only thing that will be approved today is the moving of the office,” Ott told his colleagues before the vote.

East Cobb Biz Notes: Chick-Fil-A Woodlawn Square expansion would include double drive-through

Chick Fil A Woodlawn canopy rendering

The congested layout for the Chick-Fil-A Woodlawn Square location on Johnson Ferry Road will be getting a makeover.

According to documents filed with the Cobb Zoning Division, Interplan LLC, which operates the Chick-Fil-A store at 1201 Johnson Ferry Road, wants to redo the parking lot and drive-through layout as part of an overall restaurant expansion.

In order to do that, it wants to add an adjacent .15 acres of vacant land that’s zoned community retail (CRC). A proposal to rezone from CRC and neighborhood shopping, the freestanding restaurant’s current category, to all neighborhood shopping (NS) will be heard Tuesday by the Cobb Planning Commission.

The applicant’s information packet and zoning staff analysis can be found here, and includes the above rendering and site plan modifications shown below.

What Chick-Fil-A wants to do is construct two lanes winding around the back of the restaurant, along the current route of the current single-lane drive-through, with a canopy at the order station.

If you’ve been in that drive-through lane, you’ve noticed that cars parked next to the building are essentially blocked in because of the long lines. Employees are often manually taking orders standing next to the line to speed up the process.

Chick Fil A Woodlawn site plan

In the new configuration, customers would give their order, then proceed into a single line to the window. It’s a set-up similar to other Chick-Fil-A stores with this feature.

In the Cobb zoning staff analysis, it was noted that a variance is being sought for the front setback from 50 feet to 15 feet in order to accommodate the new canopy. Staff is recommending approval with several conditions, including approval of the architecture of the building and canopy plans by the district commissioner (Bob Ott).

The NS zoning classification is consistent with the rest of Woodlawn Square, which includes Muss & Turner’s, Fresh Market, J. Christopher’s and other retail stores at the shopping center. The adjacent Starbuck’s, also freestanding, is zoned CRC.

In other East Cobb business news, Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar (The Avenue East Cobb, 4475 Roswell Road) has appointed Thomas Hill as its new executive chef.

According to Eater Atlanta, Hill moves over from Seed and Stem Wine Bar, where he worked under Drift owner Doug Turbush. Hill also has also worked at restaurants in Alaska and Oregon.

The following new businesses in East Cobb were granted licenses last week by the Cobb Community Development Department:

  • Atlanta Eco Tree, 1651 Smithwood Drive (tree trimming service);
  • Braemar Partners LLC, 1642 Powers Ferry Road, Suite 250 (land development);
  • East Cobb Embroidery, 895 Fairfield Drive (printing and embroidery services);
  • M V Auto Body Repair, 1991 Powers Ferry Road (auto repair);
  • Nest Interiors, 3411 Ebenezer Road (interior design);
  • Southland Partners, 2100 Powers Ferry Road, Suite 300 (building contractor);
