East Cobb restaurant update: Kouzina Christos to close

Kouzina Christos, East Cobb food scores

After reopening in the East Cobb area in 2021, longstanding Greek restaurant Kouzina Christos will be closing for good in January.

Owner Christos Giannes announced on Thursday that the last day of business will be Jan. 15, but he didn’t disclose a reason.

On the restaurant’s Facebook page, Giannes wrote:

“Before we take our final bow, we ask you to join us once more. Let’s fill our dining room with the sound of clinking glasses, the aroma of favorite meals, and the warmth of shared stories. Come, be part of the grand finale of a place that’s touched lives and fostered a spirit of togetherness.

“Here’s to the traditions, the bonds, and the simple joy of a meal shared. Christos is not just saying farewell; we’re commemorating the indelible mark we’ve made in each other’s lives. Let’s make these last days glow with the essence of what we’ve built together.”

The Giannes family opened their first restaurant at Terrell Mill Junction in 1979, then moved it to the Delk Spectrum shopping center.

The renamed Kouzina Christos opened in the revived Terrell Mill Village shopping center in 2012, but closed it in December 2020 following COVID-19 closures that Giannes said were crippling to mom and pop restaurants like his.

That’s across the street from the MarketPlace Terrell Mill redevelopment, and Giannes wrote at the time that “chains are happy to see the mass failure of independents, expanding the labor pool, increasing competition and increasing downward pressure on hourly wages. Corporate greed and avarice…supporting the Chinese economy.”

Giannes moved Kouzina Christos to the former Aurelio’s Pizza spot at the Market Plaza Shopping Center on Johnson Ferry Road in March 2021.

Om Thursday, Giannes said that “Christos is not just saying farewell; we’re commemorating the indelible mark we’ve made in each other’s lives. Let’s make these last days glow with the essence of what we’ve built together.”

East Cobb restaurant update: Press Waffle Co. opening delayed

Press Waffle opening Dec. 15

Following last week’s post about a Dec. 15-17 grand opening weekend at Press Waffle Co., owners Keith and Niki Ginel told East Cobb News Thursday that’s been put on hold indefinitely.

They said that “due to unforeseen delays in the construction and permitting process with East Cobb County, we are being forced to postpone the grand opening event.”

The Belgian-style waffle eatery is set to occupy one of the new “jewel box” spaces at Avenue East Cobb, a key component of the retail center’s overhaul under North American Properties.

Grand opening festivities were to include live music from local schools and churches, discounts and more.

The announcement comes a day after Press Waffle formerly sent out word of its opening. Keith Ginel told us that a new opening date hasn’t been set and that “our contractor is working on an updated schedule for us now.”

East Cobb restaurant update: Press Waffle to open Dec. 15

Press Waffle opening Dec. 15

Workers are still putting some of the finishing touches on windows and the exterior as we’re a couple weeks away from the official opening of Press Waffle Co. at Avenue East Cobb.

It’s occupying one of the new “jewel box” buildings that’s a key part of the retail center’s overhaul. Owner Keith Ginel told East Cobb News this week that the first day of business is Friday, Dec. 15, kicking off a weekend of special events, discounts and entertainment.

A ribbon-cutting takes place at 9 a.m. Friday, with the first 100 customers receiving free swag bags. Live Christmas music takes place on the patio from 4-7 and all day there will be photo booth “post and tag” opportunities for special discounts.

That latter promotion continues all weekend. On Saturday, Johnson Ferry Baptist Church musicians will perform live music on the patio from 12-1, and from 4-7 Walton HS will do the honors in the same place.

Sunday’s musicians are from Pope HS and will be featured from 2-3 p.m.

Press Waffle Co., which began as a food truck venture in St. Louis in 2016 and vaulted into fame via the television show “Shark Tank,” has seven locations in Missouri, Arkansas, Texas and Colorado.

The 1,200-square-foot space at the jewel box is the company’s first venue in Georgia. Gitel and his wife Niki are East Cobb residents and franchisees. Press Waffle, which features Belgian-style “Liège” waffles handmade (from dough, not batter) on-site.

There are a variety of sweet and savory options (including chicken and waffles, customizable toppings and a waffle ice cream sandwich), along with locally roasted coffee and espresso.

Press Waffle is partnering with Marietta-based Cool Beans Coffee Roasters and Rock House Farm & Creamery in Newton County.

Updates are being posted at the restaurant’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

East Cobb restaurant update: Drift Fish House closing Dec. 30

Drift Fish House and Oyster Bar

After nearly eight years in business, Drift Fish House and Oyster Bar is closing at Avenue East Cobb.

In a message to customers and on the restaurant’s social media channels, owner Doug Turbush and his wife Pranee said that Drift’s lease is up at the end of the year, and “we have made the difficult decision to not renew our lease.”

The final dinner service will be Dec. 30, the message said.

Opened in March 2016 as a neighborhood seafood establishment, Drift has focused its dishes around a wood-fired grill and included patio service and a New England-style lobster shack in warmer weather.

Turbush has dramatically influenced the East Cobb dining scene over the last decade or so since opening Seed Kitchen & Bar at Merchants Walk in 2011, and the adjacent Stem Wine Bar in 2013.

In an interview with East Cobb News published in February 2020, he said he decided to open Drift because “there was no dedicated high-quality seafood place here. I could have put a steakhouse there, but there’s a steakhouse on every corner in Atlanta.”

Some initial reviews weren’t good, and after the COVID-19 pandemic was declared, Turbush’s three establishments in his Seed Hospitality Group had to pivot with curbside and pickup service.

The announcement of Drift’s closing is the latest change amid a major transition at Avenue East Cobb, and in particular locally-owned businesses. The Olea Oliva! gourmet and artisanal foods store closed in October.

The retail center also is welcoming more places to eat or get food.

The NY Butcher Shoppe opened earlier this year, and Peach State Pizza Co. and Press Waffle are set to open in the coming months, along with a second location of Round Trip Brewing.

The existing Tin Lizzy’s will be adding a family-friendly gaming bar and serving restaurant menu items.

In their message to customers, the Turbushes also thanked North American Properties, Avenue’s management company, “for their invaluable assistance in ensuring a smooth transition. We wish them every success in their exciting endeavor to reimagine Avenue East Cobb.”

They thanked their staff at Drift, which they said have “consistently delivered outstanding dining experiences for our guests since the day we opened our doors.

“Our team looks forward to welcoming as many of you as possible to Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar over the next few weeks as we continue to provide the exceptional dining experience and service that you have come to expect from us. We are deeply thankful for the opportunity to have been a part of the East Cobb community and to have shared our passion for food and hospitality with you. Our sister restaurants, Seed Kitchen & Bar and Stem Wine Bar eagerly anticipate continuing to serve you, our friends and neighbors.”

East Cobb restaurant update: Sidelines Grille coming soon

Sidelines Grille coming to East Cobb

The former Egg Harbor Cafe space at Stonewood Village (once the site of the longstanding Ritter’s restaurant) has been vacant since right before the COVID-19 pandemic was declared.

But shortly after the first of the year, it will be the home to a new Sidelines Grille in Cobb County, and the fifth for Canton-based GFY Hospitality.

The family-style sports bar concept has been around since 1994, with locations in Canton, Hickory Flat, Woodstock and Cartersville. (There was a Sidelines Grille on Roswell Road across from Williamson Bros. that closed; the space later was the spot for Hoyle’s Kitchen + Bar).

The Sidelines Grille menu goes beyond traditional sports bar food (burgers, sandwiches, wraps) and drink (two dozen draft beers on tap, craft made cocktails) to include full pasta, seafood, chicken and steak entrees, along with salads and soups, Tex-Mex items and desserts.

Renovations were continuing when we stopped by (4719 Lower Roswell Road, Suite 4200), and in a social media posting last week, management indicated that the anticipated opening is between late January and early February 2024.

“We’re more than just a sports bar; we’re a family-friendly retreat that celebrates local teams, fosters community connections, and serves up smiles with every meal,” the message said.

Sideliness Grille will be moving into competitive turf in East Cobb. Bradley’s Bar and Grill and McCray’s Tavern are close by on the other side of Johnson Ferry Road; further up Johnson Ferry is Montana’s and Westfield Tavern opened earlier this year.

When Egg Harbor closed in December 2019, the company said it was leaving due to leasing issues, and specifically, roof leaks and water damage to the building that “has rendered it an unacceptable situation for our business standards.”

East Cobb News has left a message with GFY Hospitality over that matter and other information about the Sidelines Grille opening.

In response to a question from a reader about mold issues in that space, Sidelines management responded on the East Cobb News Facebook page that “we have totally gutted the space and are in the process of rebuilding. No mold here!”

East Cobb restaurant update: LongHorn opening; Reunion Kitchen forthcoming

Longhorn opening East Cobb

The sign has recently gone up in front of the relocated LongHorn Steakhouse in East Cobb: The opening is next Monday, Nov. 20, starting at 3 p.m. for dinner service.

There was no further information available; we’ve left a message seeking comment.

The standalone building at 4370 Roswell Road is on an outparcel at the Merchants Exchange Shopping Center, and it where a BB & T bank branch and originally a Black Eye’d Pea restaurant once stood.

The new restaurant will be roughly the same size as the former Lower Roswell Road location, a little less than 6,000 square feet, according to planning documents submitted with the variance request.

LongHorn had been at 4721 Lower Roswell Road since 1983, and when it marked its 30th anniversary there is 2013, it was the longest-standing original location for the Orlando-based chain.

After opening day, the hours will be the same as the other LongHorn locations: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday-Saturday. Phone: (770) 977-3045.

Reunion Kitchen and Bar

Coming Soon: Reunion Kitchen and Bar

Late last year, a new restaurant concept was announced for the former Red Sky Tapas and Bar space at Market Plaza on Johnson Ferry Road.

It was to be called 1255 Social (the number matching the street address) featuring a wood-fire grill and oven and locally- and regionally-sourced dinner fare.

A sign also went up bearing the 1255 Social name. But that sign has since been removed, and when a reader inquired with us about it, Ilene Kapper Oxman, a former East Cobb resident and a partner in the venture, told East Cobb News that “we changed the name to Reunion and opening soon.”

That was in September; now a sign has gone up and a website with some basic information on a forthcoming opening (but no timeline). Here’s the concept, per the website:

“Reunion is a place where locals gather regularly and first-timers are made to feel like regulars. We exist to create positive personalized experiences, in a setting that takes warm & inviting and mixes it with vibrant & fun to create the consistently high-quality food and drinks our neighborhood deserves.”

The menu features the “freshest ingredients, often locally grown/crafted, and reunites them with time-honored cooking techniques that emphasize individual ingredient flavors. Our plates are not architecturally placed lab experiments, but instead simple dishes full of flavor invoking memories of the best meals of our past. Our menu takes its inspiration from classic bistros serving soups, salads, sandwiches, and ‘comfortable’ entrees. The menu is priced to encourage any-day dining while the assortment range inspires special occasion users to stay awhile.”

East Cobb News got in touch with Kapper Oxman—an owner of Harry’s Pizza and Subs in Sandy Springs—and she said she’ll be providing more information soon.

Tin Lizzy’s adding game and arcade bar at Avenue East Cobb

Tin Lizzy's The Avenue East Cobb temporarily closing

The restaurant group behind the Tin Lizzy’s Cantina concept is adding a game and arcade bar next to its existing location at Avenue East Cobb.

The Tin Pin Game Bar will open early next year in the former Beni’s Cubano space and will feature menu items from Tin Lizzy’s in a family-friendly entertainment space.

Southern Proper Hospitality said in a release that popular pinball and arcade games will be featured, including The Mandalorian, Godzilla, Foo Fighters, James Bond 007, Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy. Stern’s new Venom game, released in September, also will be available for gamers.

“We’re excited to introduce Tin Pin to the East Cobb community. Our guests are going to love playing these classic games while enjoying some of their favorite Tin Lizzy’s dishes,” Southern Proper partner Chris Hadermann said in a statement. “There will be fun for all ages, plus it’s a great spot to celebrate birthdays and host events.

“We’ve curated these games to appeal to multiple age groups with super-popular themes.”

Featured arcade games include Namco 20-Year Reunion (with Ms. Pac Man and Galaga); The Sega Out Run standup racing game; Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting; and Donkey Kong.

The menu items at the Tin Pin Game Bar will include gourmet soft tacos, bowls and quesadillas and the restaurant’s full beverage menu of beers, wines, margaritas and specialty cocktails.

Tin Lizzy’s, which opened at Avenue East Cobb in 2016, is one of eight locations for the concept, and will debut the company’s game bar component.

Eater Atlanta reported that Tin Pin Game Bar is the latest in an emerging trend of local restaurants carving out gaming and entertainment space, most of them in Atlanta. They include a pickleball center near the Armour Yards venue in Midtown that’s set to open in December.

Southern Proper Hospitality, located on Powers Ferry Road in East Cobb, operates eight restaurant concepts in metro Atlanta, including the Gypsy Kitchen, the Blind Pig, The Big Ketch Saltwater Grill and Chido & Padre’s in Buckhead.

Guthrie’s Chicken files for rezoning for East Cobb restaurant

Guthrie's Chicken files for rezoning for East Cobb restaurant

A small commercial building at a corner of Lower Roswell Road and Johnson Ferry Road could be converted into a fast food chicken restaurant.

Guthrie’s Chicken, which specializes in chicken finger menu items, is scheduled to have a first hearing on its rezoning application next Tuesday before the Cobb Planning Commission.

The request seeks a change from a planned shopping center (PSC) to a neighborhood retail commercial (NRC) category for 0.3 acres at 4774 Lower Roswell Road.

The 2,000-square foot building is currently vacant but previously has housed small medical offices, including a COVID-19 testing location. It’s located in front of a CVS pharmacy, and plans call to remodel the building.

The application by DG East Cobb Guthrie’s LLC (you can read it here) calls for drive-through-only service from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily. An existing single point of access on Lower Roswell would be retained in the proposed site plan.

The request also seeks a reduction from the existing 15 parking spaces to 12 and a reduction of the front setback from 50 feet to 20 feet, and would increase the impervious surface maximum from 70 to 92.9 percent.

The Cobb Zoning Office is recommending approval of the application.

Based in Alabama, Guthrie’s is a Southern franchise operation with more than 50 locations in eight states, including one in Mableton and two in Canton.

The Guthrie’s in East Cobb would be located across the intersection from Zaxby’s, another Southern chicken chain.

DG Guthrie’s purchased the land and building for $1.2 million last September, according to Cobb property tax records.

The Cobb Planning Commission, an advisory body, meets next Tuesday at 9 a.m. For more information and a meeting overview, click here.

Tasty China opens on Powers Ferry Road

The long-awaited reopening of Tasty China has taken place. Formerly located on Franklin Gateway, Tasty China has been serving up its popular Szechuan fare at 1808 Power Ferry Road since mid-September, after a brief soft opening.

A sign out front notes a “grand opening” after 18 years at its original location. Owner Dahe Yang also operates a Tasty China in Smyrna and at Ponce City Market in Atlanta and also had a Tasty China II restaurant in Sandy Springs that closed in 2014.

The new Tasty China is in a spacious, standalone building on the former site of the Frontera restaurant, which never reopened after a fire in 2015.

It’s the second major restaurant opening in the Powers Ferry Road area in recent weeks, following the reopening of the Rose and Crown Tavern (1935 Powers Ferry Road) after the redevelopment of the former Restaurant Row.

The extensive menu (click here) at Tasty China remains largely the same, featuring spicy Szechuan appetizers, soups and entrees as well as lunch specials.

Tasty China (website) is open Sunday-Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Online ordering also is available. Phone: 770-627-2390.

Verandah opens at Olde Mill

There aren’t many Indian restaurants in the East Cobb area, but Verandah Indian Cuisine is aiming to fill the bill with a wide variety of dishes from the subcontinent.Verandah Indian Cuisine opens at Olde Mill

The menu (click here) features vegetarian and meat fare, from appetizers to tandoori platters, including vindaloo, curry, masala and korma specialties, Biryani entrees and a kids’ menu.

Online ordering and catering services are also available.

Verandah Indian Cuisine (website) is open Tuesday-Thursday from 11-3 and from 5-10 and Friday-Saturday from 11-3 and 5-10:30. Sunday hours are 11-3 and 5-10 and the restaurant is closed on Monday.

East Cobb Biz Scene: Cafe Rivkah holds special ribbon-cutting

Cafe Rivkah ribbon cutting

Back in April we visited Cafe Rivkah when it opened at the Pavilions at East Lake Shopping Center, serving up Middle Eastern breakfast/lunch/brunch fare featuring homemade artisanal baked goods.

Earlier this week owner Vicky Savrin and her husband Phil, who helps out on the business side, treated guests from the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, Visit Marietta and the East Cobb Business Association for a special ribbon-cutting event.

Local business associations have been making the rounds like this on a regular basis, and the Savrins’ ties to Marietta go deep.

She began selling homemade pastries and bakery at the Marietta Farmers Market, and regular customers wondered if she would ever consider a cafe.

While doughnuts, bagels and breads come in many varieties, the menu also features Mediterranean dishes such as shakshuka and a Lebanese chicken tawook wrap.

Cafe Rivkah (website) also was honored at the Taste of East Cobb festival in the best overall taste category. Vicky Savrin still features at the Marietta Farmers Market on Saturday mornings, and does catering as well.

Upon the cafe’s six-month anniversary, she noted on her Facebook page that “it has been a satisfying experience so far. No regrets. We learn new things everyday and we know that we made mistakes and they will happen (unfortunately) because there are so many parts to our efforts that has to work 100 percent to make the overall experience for the customers satisfying.”

The photos come from Gina Duncan, Visit Marietta’s marketing and PR manager.
