East Cobb Restaurant Update: MOD Pizza closes; WZ Tavern goes indie

MOD Pizza closes East Cobb

The fast-casual chain MOD Pizza has been closing a number of restaurants across the country in recent months, and recently that included its location at Sandy Plains Marketplace (3460 Sandy Plains Road, Suite 250).

The Seattle-based chain closed 26 locations in the first quarter of 2024, according to Restaurant Business Magazine, and earlier this month the company was purchased by Elite Restaurant Group as financial pressures mounted.

That report indicated that 44 closures have taken place following reports of possible bankruptcy. MOD Pizza closes East Cobb

MOD stands for “Made on Demand” and is the focal concept of a build-your-0wn pizza product. Nation’s Restaurant News says MOD has more than 500 restaurants remaining as it reorganizes under new ownership.

Five MOD Pizza restaurants operate in metro Atlanta, including on Cobb Parkway in Kennesaw and in Sandy Springs.

MOD was one of several nation and regional chain restaurants that opened at the then-new Sandy Plains Marketplace—on the site of the former Mountain View Elementary School—right before the COVID-19 pandemic was declared.

The others are still open: First Watch; Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar; Jim ‘N N ick’s BBQ; Panda Express and Clean Juice.

The major vacancy at the 72,689-square-foot retail center is the former GreenWise Market space. The Publix-operated organic foods grocery store closed in late 2021, after less than a year and a half in business.

WZ Tavern goes indie

After nearly nine years in business, the WZ Tavern located nearby at 3052 Shallowford Road has changed its name.

The “WZ” stood for Wing Zone, a Las Vegas-based chain which had an agreement with the East Cobb owners that has ended.

It’s now called Home Tavern, and it promises the same ambience with some menu changes. “Our new menu will include many of our long-standing favorites, along with new items that continue our Chef inspired commitment to delicious food!”

The situation is similar to another local wing institution, The Wing Cafe & Tap House, which broke away from the Wild Wing Cafe chain several years ago and has been at the same space at East Lake Shopping Center for more than 20 years.

Round Trip Brewing Co. holds grand opening at Avenue East Cobb

Nearly a year after announcing a second location at Avenue East Cobb, Round Trip Brewing Co. has opened to the public.Round Trip Brewing Co. holds grand opening at Avenue East Cobb

An official grand opening party took place on Saturday.

“We’re stoked to be expanding into East Cobb and to serve our German-style beer for the East Cobb community.” Craig Mycoskie, CEO and head brewer at Round Trip said.

“We’ve built this brewery as a communal space in the spirit of a Bavarian beer hall with the idea that people will interact, have fun, and build meaningful relationships over delicious craft beer.”

Here’s more from what we received late Friday afternoon:

“The beer lineup across 10 taps will focus on “typical and üntypical” German-style beer–mirroring the approach at the West Midtown location–and will include favorites Straight Outta Munich Spezial Helles, Instant Krüsch Extra Pale Kölsch, Oktoberfest Märzen, Dunkel Platz, Vicarious West Coast IPA, and more. The two-vessel, five-barrel brewhouse will allow for experimentation and East Cobb beer exclusives.

“In addition to the 4,000-square-foot taproom, Round Trip East Cobb will feature fast-casual food options, an indoor/outdoor bar, a private patio, and an event space for up to 78 people. The menu features travel-inspired fare that pairs well with German-style beer, including hot dogs, bratwursts, cheesesteaks, pretzel bites, and occasional specials as well as options for vegetarians and kids.

Co-owner Amy Mycoskie, Round Trip’s director of hospitality, said there will be a Pilsener Patio Party on July 27, as well as Oktoberfest from Sept. 21-29 and other special events to be announced. Round Trip also is available for private events and those can be booked on the restaurant website, with special deals through October.

Round Trip opened in Midtown Atlanta in February 2021, and the brewery distributes three beers through Savannah Distributing all year long – Straight Outta Munich, Instant Krüsch, and Vicarious – as well as seasonally available options, including Oktoberfest Märzen starting in July.

Hours are Monday-Thursday 11am-9pm, Friday and Saturday 11am-10pm, and Sunday 12:30pm-7pm.

Seed Kitchen and Bar to debut remodeled outdoor patio

Seed Kitchen and Bar patio reopening

East Cobb’s Seed Kitchen & Bar recently completed a remodeling of its outdoor patio that has been weatherproofed for the summer season.

The 74-seat space includes a louvered roof and vinyl panels, fans, and built-in heaters for year-round outdoor dining. It also can acccommodate special celebrations.

Seed owner Doug Turbush said in a release this week that the re-opening will kick off on Saturday, June 8. Every Saturday during the summer, the menu will feature a “Lobster Camp” menu with Connecticut- and Maine-style lobster rolls, served on a brioche roll with chips and a pickle spear, along with white sangria.

Seed opened in 2011 at Merchants Walk and two years later, opened the Stem Wine Bar next door. His seafood restaurant, Drift Fish House and Oyster Bar, closed at Avenue East Cobb at the end of 2023.

East Cobb Biz Scene: Brass Tap opens; June biz events; more

Brass Tap opens East Cobb

After some delays, the first Brass Tap Craft Beer Bar in the East Cobb area has opened at MarketPlace Terrell Milll.

The location at 1420 Terrell Mill Road, Suite 100, is located near the Los Abuelos Grill.

Monday was the first day of business for the location operated by Raj and Meghl Patel, brothers in their 20s from a family of entrepreneurs, who have operated gas stations and businesses in the hospitality industry.

They’ve signed on to open several more locations in metro Atlanta for Tampa-based franchise chain, which has Atlanta-area locations at Perimeter Center, Milton and Hapeville for the time being.

Brass Tap is one of the finishing touches on the mixed-use development that includes a Kroger superstore that opened last summer and market-rate apartments at the intersection of Powers Ferry and Terrell Mill roads.

More than 150 craft beer choices on draught and in bottles are featured at Brass Tap, ranging from the (512) Bock deep amber from Austin, Texas to five varieties of Pennslyvania’s famed Yuengling Brewer, including a Hershey’s Chocolate Porter.

Georgia beers include Terrapin, Sweetwater, and Marietta’s own Red Hare.

The main food menu includes a wide selection of starters, nachos, chicken wings, burgers, pizzas, salads, subs and desserts.

The restaurant includes a loyalty program called the Brew Crew, and online delivery and pickup ordering is also available.

June Biz Association events

The East Cobb Business Association will hold its monthly women’s luncheon, Professional Women of East Cobb, on June 14 at J. Christopher’s at Woodlawn Square (1205 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 114).

The event is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the cost is $20-$25.

The organization’s main luncheon is June 18 and the featured speaker is leadership coach and branding consultant Stacey Ruth, whose topic is: “Brand You: Breakthrough thinking to fast-track growth.”

The event includes networking and lasts from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Rich Hart Global Studios )2030 Powers Ferry Road, Suites 270-280).  The cost is $20-$30.

ECBA also has weekly open networking meetings Friday at IHOP (3130 Johnson Ferry Road) and monthly Toastmasters sessions, also at Rich Hart.

The Northeast Cobb Business Association is on hiatus until August.

State of the County address

Cobb Commission Chairwoman Lisa Cupid will deliver the State of the County address June 10 at the Cobb Chamber of Commerce’s Monday Marquee.

It’s from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre at The Battery Atlanta (800 Battery Avenue, Suite 500).

Cupid, a Democrat, is in the final year of her term and is seeking re-election in November.

East Cobb Biz Scene: Buckhead Butcher Shop opens 2nd store

As he considered expanding from his original store in Atlanta, Buckhead Butcher Shop owner Connor Boney said coming to East Cobb was high on his list.

He also was looking at another possibility in the Alpharetta-Johns Creek area, but decided on the former Cleaver and Cork space at the Shops of Woodlawn on Johnson Ferry Road (next to Big Peach Running Co.)

The Buckhead Butcher Shop opened on May 1, and like its older counterpart sells premium beef and meats and select seafood products, along with charcuterie items, side dishes, spices, eggs, prepared pasta meals, condiments and more.

Boney and his wife Katie (the company’s chief financial officer) started the Buckhead Butcher Shop in 2020, not long after the start of COVID-19.

He was a co-owner of Revere Meat Co. in Forest Park, which specialized in locally sourced meat processing and distribution. One of his employees there, Sam Fender, came over to help open the Buckhead Butcher Shop, as pandemic closures continued.

Buckhead Butcher Shop started as box-truck operation, selling meats to largely home-bound customers as restaurants remained closed, then took up temporary store space in Peachtree Heights.

The Buckhead store has moved to a location off West Paces Ferry Road, and includes space for cooking classes and private events.

“This how we started,” Fender said, looking around the black-clad walls and decor at the East Cobb store. “This is similar to the first store, with the same aesthetic.”

For now, Fender and executive chef Leonard Lewis—who served in a similar capacity at Bones, an iconic Atlanta steakhouse—are handling the operations in East Cobb, which is open for retail sales from daily.

The beef comes primarily from Creekstone Farms of Oklahoma, which specializes in black Angus. Seafood is sourced from around the world, with salmon from Norway, tuna from Costa Rica, to name two examples.

The objective, Lewis said, is to help home cooks.

“We’re not selling products, we’re selling an experience,” he said. “We want to make everything connect with you.”

Fender noted the competition in the area: the New York Butcher Shoppe, and long-standing businesses such as the Cajun Meat Co.

He said he not only welcomes the competition—”it keeps your standards high”—but says their presence reflects a strong opportunity in this market.

“We’re trying to get people back to the dinner table,” Fender said, “and enjoying meals and one another.”

East Cobb restaurant update: Reunion Kitchen and Bar opens

Reunion Kitchen and Bar opens

After a name change and several months of renovations, Reunion Kitchen and Bar has opened at the Market Plaza Shopping Center on Johnson Ferry Road.

Co-owner Ilene Kapper Oxman said in a release Thursday that the restaurant concept, which held a grand opening April 2, focuses on a “fusion of exquisite cuisine, captivating ambience, and handcrafted drinks.”

Reunion, located in the former Red Sky space (1255 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 16) is open for dinner from Tuesday through Sunday.

The fusion includes “classic flavors and contemporary twists, showcasing the best of Southern hospitality. From comforting soups and salads to innovative cocktails and carefully curated wine selections, there’s something to delight every palate.”

Oxman, a former East Cobb resident, has been working with two other partners in the venture in part to fill the void left by Red Sky, which closed in 2022 after 14 years.

Initially the new restaurant was to be called 1255 Social, reflecting the street address.

Oxman said the name was switched to Reunion “as a testament to the power of bringing people together. Whether it’s a gathering of family, friends, or colleagues, Reunion is the place where memories are made, and connections are forged.”

The menu include beef, pork, chicken and seafood entrees, starters and shareables, salads, desserts and a fully stocked bar.

Reunion also has outdoor space with heaters and a roof for year-round use.

“Our vision is to create a gathering place where guests can enjoy exceptional food, drinks, and company in a welcoming atmosphere,” Oxman said. “We look forward to becoming a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike.”

Reunion is open Sunday 4-9; Tuesday-Wednesdsay 4-9; Thursday 4-10, Friday-Saturday 4-11 and is closed on Monday.
