East Cobb restaurant news: Stem Wine Bar to reopen Friday

Stem Wine Bar

After being closed for more than six months due to COVID-19, the Stem Wine Bar dining room is reopening on Friday and reservations are being “strongly recommended.”

Reservations are a new feature for the last of Doug Turbush’s three East Cobb restaurants to reopen, following Seed Kitchen and Bar next door at Merchant’s Walk and Drift Fish House and Oyster Bar at The Avenue East Cobb.

Dine-in options will be available on Friday and Saturday and ticketed tasting events Tuesday-Thursday.

The delivery and curbside pickup service also starts on Friday and will be available Tuesday-Saturday.

A temporary tastings and wine menus will be offered inside, and the hours and services are as follows:

  • Tuesday-Thursday takeout and delivery, 5-9 p.m.
Tuesday-Thursday dine-in Ticketed Tasting Events Only
    Friday-Saturday takout, delivery and dine-in, 5-10 p.m.

One of the reasons Stem opened later was due to its small seating area, and a message announcing the reopening says that “we are adhering to social distancing guidelines and have implemented additional safety protocols.”

That includes reservations. Info: 678-214-6888. Address: 1311 Johnson Ferry Road.

East Cobb restaurant update: McCray’s Tavern opens at Parkaire

McCray's Tavern East Cobb opens

A “soft” opening of the new McCray’s Tavern in East Cobb has been going on for a couple of weeks, but now the restaurant at Parkaire Landing Shopping Center is making it official after posting a social media message Thursday.

Menus, hours and other details can be found here; when we talked with general manager Andrew McDonough he said a number of measures are being implemented in accordance with COVID-19 protocols, including spacing of tables.

The menu is similar to other McCray’s locations (and is the same for dining in or takeout), a mix of standard tavern fare and chef’s features. The dinner menu includes woodfire grill-cooked meats and fish and there is a drink menu with the promise of “sips and stogies,” with scotch and bourbon and cigar-rolling.

Online ordering and reservations are also available. Phone: 404-800-3553.

Kitchen hours are Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Bar hours are Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 12 a.m.

They’re also in the process of hiring two full-time bartenders. Apply to stephen@leadhg.com or stop in Tuesday-Thursday 2-4 p.m.

East Cobb food scores: Mzizi Coffee; Which Which; more

Mzizi Coffee, East Cobb food scores

When restaurants shuttered due to COVID-19 closures in March, health inspections grounded to a halt for months, and there haven’t been many conducted at East Cobb establishments since then.

A handful of restaurants and other eateries have been inspected since late July by Cobb and Douglas Public Health, including the following listed below in East Cobb.

Inspectors have been making their rounds around the county during this time, they just haven’t stopped by many places here. For example, a good chunk of the inspections added to their database recently have been for the many food vendors at Six Flags and White Water.

Typically during the spring and summer, inspectors are busy with similar vendors at Truist Park and restaurants at The Battery, but with no fans allowed at Atlanta Braves games this year, there haven’t been any inspections.

Many restaurants are still operating at far below full dining room capacity due to physical distancing requirements everywhere.

Posting these scores has become a favorite topic for readers, so much so that we went from publishing them weekly, to every other week to weekly.

When we have enough East Cobb scores to report, we will post them as we have as follows. Click the link under each listing for details of the inspection:

Taste of East Cobb postponed for a second time, to May 2021

Taste of East Cobb

When organizers of the Taste of East Cobb delayed their springtime food festival, they were hopeful of pulling it off on Halloween.

But that’s not going to happen in 2020, due to “the continuing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,” per a message sent out on Wednesday.

Instead, they’ll be aiming for May 2021, the usual month the Walton Band fundraising event has taken place.

Co-chairman David Wilson said the second postponement was made “out of an abundance of caution, and to do our part to keep our community safe.”

As many businesses were closed during the spring, the Taste of East Cobb held a special “takeout” promotion to help local restaurants.

Most late summer-early fall events in East Cobb have been called off or delayed. The Noshfest at Temple Kol Emeth, held on the Labor Day weekend, is being pushed back to the spring.

The EAST COBBER parade and festival, slated for mid-September, was cancelled. Last week, the Rotary Club of East Cobb announced its early August Dog Days Run will be a “No K” event.

Also on Wednesday, officials with the North Georgia State Fair announced the annual late September-early October event at Jim Miller Park was being cancelled.

Former Burger’s Market owner opening weekend produce stand

Burger's Market closing
Burger’s Market closed on Canton Road in August 2018 after 45 years. (ECN file)

Following up our post about local weekend produce stands, comes some more good news for fresh vegetable and fruit fans:

One of the former owners of the Burger’s Market in East Cobb are starting one of their own, starting this Saturday. It’s been almost two years since the market closed on Canton Road, after 45 years in business.

Tina Burger Berry, daughter of the Burger’s Market founder Truman Burger, is taking online orders through 10 a.m. Thursday (details below). The pickup spot is the Daily Bread Cafe (531 Roselane St. in Marietta, near Kennestone Hospital, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

She and her sister Sharilyn have kept the market’s Facebook page alive, and on Monday, that’s where Tina announced the news about the pop-up market:

“I’ve been thinking and praying on a way to serve our loyal customers and community with the freshest, most local produce available like our family did for over 45 years every since we shut our doors and sold almost 2 yrs ago. When God closes one door, he always opens another. So, after much prayer and anticipation….HERE it goes!! We will not have a storefront, consider us more of a local mobile market of sorts.”

What they’re offering are fixed bags of vegetables ($25) and fruit ($20) and a make-your-own bag with a $15 minimum. Each Monday by 2 p.m. they’ll list the available items for that weekend’s market, with the deadline for ordering by 2 p.m. Thursday by e-mailing burgersmkt@gmail.com or by filling out this form.

Payment is cash or Venmo, which is becoming the standard for some other pop-up stands that have emerged recently.

Orders will come in brown paper bags, but you’re free to bring your own bags or boxes. The first weekend items are as follows:

  • Fruit bag: Tree ripened peaches, Cantaloupe, Watermelon, Muscadines or Scuppernongs
  • Veggie bag: Vine ripe Tomatoes Stringless Pole beans, Sweet potatoes, Pickling cukes, Yellow crookneck squash, Georgia Kale, Silver queen corn, Vidalia onions
  • Make your own bag (items also sold individually): Okra, Vidalia onions, Red tomatoes , Fresh shelled lady finger peas or white butter beans, Zuchini Silver queen corn, Cantaloupe, Heirloom tomatoes, Watermelon, Green boiling peanuts.

Tina asked for patience us as we navigate through this new endeavor . . . We sure have missed you!! I can’t wait to see you beautiful people!!”

Weekend produce stand comes to Lower Roswell Road location

Lower Roswell weekend produce stand

Reader Theresa lets us know that every Saturday and Sunday from 12-3 fresh produce and homemade goods are being sold in the parking lot at the Coastal gas station (Day Brothers Automotive) at 2011 Lower Roswell Road, next to the Sewell Mill Library.

The food comes from Smyrna-based produce proprietor Lee Harvey of Fat Iguana Produce, and items include fruits and vegetables he buys at the State Farmers Market, as well as baked goods.

Harvey started operating on the weekends from the Day Brothers business last month, and it’s among a number of “pop-up” farmers markets that have been springing up in the East Cobb area.

Another is Holland Botanical, which takes online orders during the week for Saturday delivery of boxed fruits and vegetables in the parking lot of the Shallowford Falls Shopping Center. Updates and details about Holland Botanical can be found here; they’re also beginning a Tuesday pickup time and you’ll have until noon Monday to place an order.

Bradley’s Bar and Grill closed until Saturday due to COVID case

East Cobb restaurants opening, Bradley's Bar and Grill

UPDATE: The restaurant announced Saturday that it has reopened.

Another East Cobb restaurant is shutting down temporarily after a positive COVID case, this from a customer. Here’s the message sent out shortly after noon Thursday by Bradley’s Bar and Grill (4961 Lower Roswell Road):

One of our customers has tested positive for Covid-19. So today (Thursday) and Friday (July 24) we will be closed for extensive disinfecting and cleaning of the entire restaurant. Unless you hear otherwise, we will open for regular business on Saturday.

A few other East Cobb restaurants also closed temporarily in recent weeks after employees tested positive, including Drift Fish House and Paradise Grille. They reopened after a few days. The two Moxie Burger restaurants in East Cobb and Moxie Taco were closed a bit longer, also due to a positive COVID employee test.

Moxie Burger at Paper Mill Village has reopened its dining room, as has Moxie Taco, also at Paper Mill Village. The Shallowford Road and Roswell locations of Moxie Burger are offering curbside and to-go menu items.

Flying Biscuit, McCray’s Tavern opening soon in East Cobb

Flying Biscuit East Cobb

Two new restaurants at Parkaire Landing Shopping Center were in the planning stages as the COVID-19 outbreak unfolded, and those preparations are still continuing for what are forthcoming openings.

No dates have been announced as yet for the opening of the Flying Biscuit Cafe and McCray’s Tavern.

A Flying Biscuit representative told us that “we’ve had some construction delay due to Covid. We should have a tentative date soon.”

The Atlanta-based breakfast and lunch chain announced nearly a year ago that it was coming back to East Cobb, after closing its location at Woodlawn Commons in 2010.

The Parkaire Landing location, located next to Kroger, was to have opened in the spring, along with a few other new Flying Biscuit additions in metro Atlanta and Athens.

On the other end of the retail center, in the former Loyal Q/Loyal Tavern space, McCray’s Tavern is continuing opening plans, but there’s also no other timeline they’re reporting for now except to say it’s “very, very soon.”

It will be the East Cobb debut for the Atlanta-based tavern group, which recently opened Mac’s Chophouse in the former Shillings on the Square in downtown Marietta.

McCray’s is interviewing for all positions Wednesday and Thursday from 3-7 p.m. and on Friday from 10 a.m. to  2 p.m.

More details about that on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

Andrew McDonough, the East Cobb restaurant’s general manager, told East Cobb News that training for staff members is continuing this week, along with additional hiring.

He said additional sanitizing, virus testing and safety training is part of the opening plans, but he wasn’t ready to say when a hard opening would take place.

Drift Fish House closes temporarily after COVID-19 case

Drift Fish House and Oyster Bar

Drift Fish House and Oyster Bar at The Avenue East Cobb is closed until at least Saturday after one of its employees tested positive for COVID-19.

The restaurant sent a message Thursday afternoon that the employee “is safe and is in quarantine” and the premises are undergoing “a deep sanitization and disinfection.”

“Rest assured, we have been meeting and exceeding all state and local safety requirements. We are doing everything in our power to ensure a safe dining experience for our guests, and to provide a safe place to work for our team,” the message said.

The tentative reopening is Saturday for dinner service. Drift said it also has alerted Cobb and Douglas Public Health and “is closely following their guidance.”

A few other restaurants in East Cobb also have closed for similar reasons. Earlier this week Paradise Grille was closed for two days after an employee tested positive for the virus.

Two East Cobb locations of Moxie Burger and Moxie Taco have been closed since last weekend after an employee tested positive.

Drift and Seed Kitchen and Bar, both owned by East Cobb restaurateur Doug Turbush, reopened their dining rooms on June 9. Turbush’s three Seed Hospitality Group businesses closed in March; Seed and Drift began serving takeout only in late May.

Seed remains open, and resumed lunch service this week. The Stem Wine Bar, also owned by Turbush and located adjacent to Seed at Merchants Walk, has been closed since March.

Paradise Grille closed until Wednesday due to COVID-19 case

Paradise Grille closed COVID

UPDATED: Paradise Grille reopened on Wednesday. Here’s another message from the owners, who said every other staff member has tested negative for the virus:

“The silver lining out of this, is we feel so relieved that our staff are safe and taken care of and we can truly give you a safe space to relax, eat some great food and get away from the news.” 😛

ORIGINAL STORY:

Another restaurant in East Cobb is closing temporarily after an employee tested positive for COVID-19.

The Paradise Grille at Highland Plaza (3605 Sandy Plains Road) announced Monday it would be closed until Wednesday to undergo a thorough professional cleaning, including “Every. Single. Surface.”

Late last week, the two East Cobb locations of Moxie Burger and Moxie Taco closed temporarily after an employee tested positive for COVID-19, which has more than 1,000 confirmed cases in East Cobb and nearing 6,000 in the county

Paradise Grille owners Justin and Joe Barrett said in a message Monday that the employee has a mild case of the virus and that “we are praying for a quick recovery.

“As you know businesses are not required to close, but that’s not who we are. We want to do everything right,” they continued.

Every employee will be tested for the virus, and every surface in the restaurant will be disinfected after every use. Employees will be masked and gloved and will have their temperatures taken before every shift.

“We are obviously devastated,” the Barretts said. “We did know it was an eventuality, this virus is everywhere.”

Paradise Grille is scheduled to reopen Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Moxie Burger, Moxie Taco close temporarily after COVID case

Moxie Burger Moxie Taco close COVID
The original Moxie Burger restaurant at Paper Mill Village.

The two East Cobb locations of Moxie Burger and the Moxie Taco restaurant have closed temporarily after an employee tested positive for COVID-19.

The East Cobb-based Moxie Restaurant Group alerted customers on its Facebook pages Friday morning that the three restaurants will undergo a full disinfecting process from a professional sanitation provider and that all employees will required to be tested.

The Moxie Burger locations at Paper Mill Village and 2421 Shallowford Road are closed, as is Moxie Taco, also at Paper Mill Village.

“Previous to this, Moxie Taco and all Moxie Burger locations have been relentless with their disinfecting efforts and social distancing. The safety of our customers is just as important to us as is the safety of our staff and we are doing everything in our power to take our sanitation and safety measures above and beyond,” the message states.

“We do not take this announcement lightly and fully understand the concerns you might have. We remain steadfast in our commitment to keep our staff, guests, and community safe and are here to address any concerns and questions that you have.”

The Moxie Burger location in Roswell remains open, as “we are confident our team at Moxie Burger Roswell was not in direct contact.”

That restaurant is open Friday and Sunday and will be closed on Saturday for the July 4 holiday.

The Moxie restaurants re-opened their dining rooms service on June 1 after being closed, and then open for takeout, in the wake of the COVID virus.

The number of positive COVID cases has risen dramatically in Georgia and in Cobb County, where a public health alert was issued on Wednesday.

Cobb and Douglas Public Health said it is investigating 300 businesses in both counties for outbreaks (when two or more individuals that are positive in the same place) but they have not been identified.

UPDATED, 1:23 P.M.: The Freakin’ Incan restaurant at Sandy Plains Village has announced that due to rising COVID cases, it’s closing its dining room and is staying open for takeout service.

“We are discussing with the landlord about adding outside tables and chairs and could possibly have them available by the end of next week. Please bear with us while we try to protect the health of our staff and our customers. We feel that limiting our exposure and preventing possible sickness to be the correct decision at the moment. This is a preventative measure to avoid getting sick and forcing a complete shutdown. All staff are in good health, I repeat, all staff are in good health! I would like to take this chance to wish all of you a safe and healthy Fourth of July!”

East Cobb restaurant reopenings: Taqueria Tsunami, Ted’s, more

East Cobb Taqueria Tsunami restaurant

We’re keeping track of a flurry of announcements by East Cobb businesses in recent days about their reopening plans, and in the case of restaurants, the return of dining-room service.

Among those restaurants allowing you to dine in now is Taqueria Tsunami on Johnson Ferry Road, where the patio also is open, as of today (Thursday).

Like many restaurants that are allowing customers to eat-in, management posted the following safety/sanitation measures it is undertaking, noting it’s also trained staff on the new procedures:

  • Continuous and routine hourly sanitizing/cleaning of all highly trafficked and touched areas of the restaurant (from bar tops down to all door handles)
  • Provide masks and gloves for team members
  • Team member wellness screen every shift
  • Encourage guests to wear masks and practice social distancing while in the restaurant
  • Limited our seating capacity, as required by state regulation, to ensure social distancing and capacity limits are met
  • Use of disposable, one-time use menus
  • Removal of salt and pepper shakers and condiments from the tables (available upon request, and sanitized after use)
  • Added antibacterial stations for our team and guests
  • Focus on sanitation and cleanliness during our shift staff meetings to promote the importance of rigorous hand washing procedures
  • Encouraging customers, vendors and team members to remain home if showing any sign of illness or being in contact with someone who has the virus.

Taqueria Tsunami’s dining room reopening comes two days after Gov. Brian Kemp relaxed some restrictions for restaurants, which can now seat 10 patrons per 300 square feet and seat as many as 10 people in one dining party.

The Tin Lizzy’s restaurant at The Avenue East Cobb reopened on Wednesday, with dining room service available daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Tonight Aspen’s Signature Steaks is starting what it calls “distanced dine-in service” from 5-8 p.m.

Reservations are required, and you can make one online.  Curbside service continues from 4-8 p.m. daily and you can order here.

Ted’s Montana Grill at Parkaire Landing Shopping Center also has opened up its dining room, starting at 11:30 a.m. daily.

A few other restaurants of note are taking additional steps before fully reopening.

Paradise South of the Border (Highland Plaza Shopping Center) will be opening its dining room and the patio for limited dine-in starting Monday, May 18 but for now the Paradise Grille dining room is remaining closed, and is being used for curbside pick up only

The Lemon Grass Thai Restaurant at East Lake is expanding its hours, but only for takeout and curbside: Monday-Friday 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Monday-Friday 5-10 p.m.; Friday-Saturday 5-10:30 p.m.; Sunday 4-10 p.m.; plans are to reopen the dining room in a couple of weeks.

‘Take Out the Virus’ campaign to support Cobb restaurants

Take Out the Virus Atlanta

Submitted information:

A new Cobb-based campaign has launched to help restaurants struggling with business loss because of COVID-19. Sterling Seacrest Partners, a Cobb risk management and insurance brokerage firm, is working with Atlanta businesses to “Take Out the Virus” (www.takeoutthevirusATL.com). Area businesses are pledging to support local restaurants, helping restaurant employees and their families.

Here is how it works, Sterling Seacrest Partners has pledged to pay for take-out orders purchased at area restaurants. The firm will give each of its 150 employees $50 for ordering take-out from a local restaurant. They will give employees $100 if the employee orders from a restaurant that is also a Sterling Seacrest client.

“We thought this was a great concept because it aligned so closely with our core values to support our team members, our clients and our community,” says Garry Hill of Sterling Seacrest Partners. “We are fortunate to live in such an incredible city for food.  These restaurants are an integral part of the fabric of our community. As a firm, we felt like we needed to do something and not just at home and watch.”

Sterling Seacrest is challenging other Atlanta area businesses to support area restaurants by sponsoring a night of ordering in to help Take Out the Virus.

Several businesses have already signed up, including Benedetti Gucer & Associates, a wealth management firm, Piedmont Pediatrics, and Leff & Associates Public Relations.

For Piedmont Pediatrics, the doctors wanted to support their people who have been working straight through the pandemic crisis and to support the restaurant community around the hospital.
