Marietta Greek Festival returning in drive-through format

Organizers of the Marietta Greek Festival will be holding a 2021 event after cancelling last year due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

But the return of the festival to Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church (3431 Trickum Road) will be done in a drive-through fashion.

It’s what’s being called “Opa to Go,” as food, music, dancing and atmosphere will be lined up around the church grounds for visitors who make their way in their vehicles.

What’s missing from the revamped format are the church sanctuary tours.

The dates are May 14-16, with more details provided and forthcoming at MariettaGreekFestival.com.

2021 Taste of East Cobb cancelled; Taste of Marietta delayed

Taste of East Cobb

Food festival update:

The organizers of the Taste of East Cobb announced recently that the event is being cancelled for the second year in a row due to continuing COVID-19 safety protocols.

The fundraising event for the Walton High School band programs is now slated for May 2022.

Last year the Taste of East Cobb was initially delayed to last fall, then to May 2021.

This year’s the Taste of Marietta, which was scheduled for late April, is being rescheduled to Oct. 24, according to the Marietta Visitors Bureau, which organizes the event.

In a release issued Monday the MVB said that “the safety and health of the community, vendors, artists, guests, and staff is the festival’s top priority. The Marietta Visitors Bureau will be monitoring and following recommendations from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Governor Kemp’s Executive Orders.”

Another major event in East Cobb already has been canceled for September. For the second year in a row, there will not be an EAST COBBER Parade and Festival for the same reasons.

EAST COBBER Parade and Festival cancelled for 2021

East Cobber parade cancelled
The annual East Cobber parade and festival features dozens of community participants.

For the second year in a row, the EAST COBBER Parade and Festival has been cancelled due to COVID-19 issues.

Publisher Cynthia Rozzo said in a message in the current March-April issue of the magazine that public health compliance concerns prompted the cancellation of the event, which had been slated for Sept. 18.

Although initially hopeful due to the arrival of vaccines, she said that “under current CDC guidelines for community events and large gatherings we could not figure out how to keep participants and guests safe.”

The logistics include several months of planning and involve many community groups and organizations. “Those planning steps have been hampered by the outbreak and the uncertainty about it,” Rozzo said.

This was to have been the 25th anniversary of the parade, which travels down Johnson Ferry Road from Mt. Bethel Elementary School to Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, where a community festival follows.

Rozzo started the free community magazine in 1993, publishing 11 times a year. But after the COVID-related business closings last year, she has reduced publication of the EAST COBBER, which is mailed to more than 22,000 subscribers, to six times a year.

Sprayberry Arts and Crafts Show cancelled due to COVID

Sprayberry Craft Show, East Cobb weekend events

The organizers of the Sprayberry PTSA Arts & Crafts Show were holding out hope of having their 38th event later in November, and had been holding some virtual shopping events for customers and to help out vendors.

But on Friday the Sprayberry PTSA announced the show would not be going on after all, joining most other holiday craft shows in the East Cobb area in sitting out this year.

Here’s the message sent out on Friday:

Many of our crafters did not feel comfortable participating given COVID-19 concerns and we share their concern as well as the concern we have for our shoppers and volunteers. We realize that while some will support our decision, others will not. Please know it was made with much consideration, discussion, and thought. We appreciate all the support that has been provided to our school through the attendance of the Arts & Crafts Show for 37 years. We have been able to provide thousands of dollars in student scholarships, teacher grants, and support programs throughout our school; benefitting our teachers, students, and families. Our 38th show will take place in November 2021 and we can’t wait to see you there!

East Cobb Events Update: Major holiday craft shows cancelled

Lassiter Craft Fair, East Cobb Weekend Events

Three major holiday-season shopping events in East Cobb are a no-go for 2020.

The organizers of the Lassiter Craft Fair are the latest to announce that the event has been cancelled.

It’s typically one of the earliest events on the holiday shopping calendar, and was to have taken place on Nov. 7-8 at Lassiter High School.

The fair is a fundraiser for the Lassiter band programs, and here’s the message that was sent out Wednesday:

“All vendors who submitted an application for the 2020 craft fair should have received an email regarding the event cancellation. Thank you for supporting Lassiter Marching Band! Please reach out to lassitercraftfair@gmail.com with any questions.”

The 40th annual Apple Annie Arts & Crafts Show at the Catholic Church of St. Ann also has been cancelled. That was to have taken place in early December, with proceeds supporting projects of the church’s women’s ministry:

If you are interested in applying for the 2021 show, applications will be posted at https://st-ann.org/apple-annie in early November 2020 with a deadline of March 31, 2021.

Also slated for mid-November was the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Craft Show. The tentative dates for 2021 are Nov.12-13.

Cancellations relating to COVID-19 have affected nearly all major events in East Cobb since March. Saturday was to have been the EAST COBBER magazine’s 25th annual parade and festival, but that is not taking place.

Those behind another big holiday shopping event, the Sprayberry PTSA Arts and Crafts Show, have indicated their long-running arts and crafts show scheduled for Nov. 21-22 may also be cancelled.

They’ve  organized a virtual fundraiser in partnership with Panda Express on Sept. 18, and plans are to have future monthly virtual fundraisers; you can find more information here.

Taste of East Cobb postponed for a second time, to May 2021

Taste of East Cobb

When organizers of the Taste of East Cobb delayed their springtime food festival, they were hopeful of pulling it off on Halloween.

But that’s not going to happen in 2020, due to “the continuing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,” per a message sent out on Wednesday.

Instead, they’ll be aiming for May 2021, the usual month the Walton Band fundraising event has taken place.

Co-chairman David Wilson said the second postponement was made “out of an abundance of caution, and to do our part to keep our community safe.”

As many businesses were closed during the spring, the Taste of East Cobb held a special “takeout” promotion to help local restaurants.

Most late summer-early fall events in East Cobb have been called off or delayed. The Noshfest at Temple Kol Emeth, held on the Labor Day weekend, is being pushed back to the spring.

The EAST COBBER parade and festival, slated for mid-September, was cancelled. Last week, the Rotary Club of East Cobb announced its early August Dog Days Run will be a “No K” event.

Also on Wednesday, officials with the North Georgia State Fair announced the annual late September-early October event at Jim Miller Park was being cancelled.

Indian Hills cancels July 4 fireworks show; Cobb issues reminders

One of East Cobb’s most notable July 4 events is not taking place this year: The Indian Hills Country Club’s fireworks show.Cobb fireworks New Year's Eve

A social media posting Tuesday morning said COVID-19 restrictions were the cause:

“We wish things were different and like you, we hope to get back to normal very soon. Until then, we are doing our part to keep everyone in our community safe. Thanks for understanding.”

The message asked individuals not to gather on the golf course on the night of July 4, as is the custom when fireworks take place.

Individuals and neighborhoods will be allowed to fire off fireworks until midnight on Friday, July 3, as well as Saturday, July 4, as Cobb County government has outlined in a reminder it issued earlier this week.

The county said there have been more complaints about late-night fireworks during the pandemic.

Most other local July 4 events also have been called off including the City of Marietta’s July 4 parade and celebrations, as well as the City of Roswell’s fireworks extravaganza.

EAST COBBER parade and festival cancelled due to COVID-19

East Cobber parade
Unicyclists from Mt. Bethel Elementary School are a regular participant in the EAST COBBER parade. (ECN file)

The 25th annual EAST COBBER magazine parade and accompanying festival won’t take place in September due to COVID-19, publisher Cynthia Rozzo said in her June-July issue.

She said after weighing various planning and preparation scenarios, and because of continuing public health restrictions stemming from the virus, calling everything off is “the right thing to do. I hated to do it, it was a very hard choice to make.”

Hundreds of community organizations and businesses march down Johnson Ferry Road before thousands of spectators in mid-September, and after the parade a festival is held at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church.

Large public gatherings and community events in Georgia are still prohibited, even as other restrictions on business and social activity are beginning to be lifted.

“We’re in a situation that nobody has been in before,” Rozzo wrote, “and there’s just too many facets of the parade and festival that have to happen that could not be finalized because of the coronavirus situation.”

Rozzo, who founded the magazine in 1993, also has been affected by the loss of advertising due to business closures as a result of COVID-19. For the first time in her magazine’s history, she suspended an issue in May.

The June-July EAST COBBER issue, which was published Thursday, is 24 pages. Most issues range between 44-52 pages.

East Cobb festival update: Noshfest postponed to spring 2021

Noshfest

Saturday would have been the Taste of East Cobb festival, but like many special events in the community, it’s among those postponed or cancelled due to COVID-19.

The latest is the Noshfest, a Jewish food, music and cultural celebration that’s been held on the Labor Day weekend at Temple Kol Emeth.

Earlier this week, Noshfest organizers sent out word that their 10th annual festival will be pushed back to the spring of 2021.

No specific dates were mentioned for now. Last month it was announced Noshfest would be moved up to Aug. 22-23.

The Marietta Greek Festival was to have been held May 15-17 at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, but is being cancelled altogether this year.

Other spring festival casualties in East Cobb included the Northeast Community Egg Drop at Sprayberry High School, as well as the Cobb Master Gardeners plant sale and expo and spring home garden tour. Both of those were planned for April.

A number of other major spring and summer events around metro Atlanta are being called off or pushed back, including the Peachtree Road Race.

The July 4 event, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, will now take place on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26.

East Cobb Events Update: Marietta Greek Festival cancelled

Marietta Greek Festival

The organizers of the Marietta Greek Festival announced Thursday that this year’s event, scheduled for May 15-17, has been cancelled and will not be made up. Here’s the message that’s being sent out:

“As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, our utmost concern is for the health and safety of our guests, neighbors, and church family. We look forward to seeing you again in May 2021 – as always, the weekend after Mother’s Day!”

That was the last of the major spring festivals and events in East Cobb to announce a cancellation or postponement.

The May 2 Taste of East Cobb was called off last month, as was the Cobb Master Gardeners plant sale and expo and spring garden tour.

Another event that had been scheduled for April 18 will be held in the summer.

That’s the sendoff for retiring Temple Kol Emeth Rabbi Steven Lebow, whose Opus celebration is now taking place on July 18.

East Cobb calendar update: April event cancellations continue

A few April events we’d normally promote on our Events Calendar are being called off, and we expect more to come in.Walton Chorus

Among them is the Walton Chorus Spring Concert scheduled for April 21. All public schools in Georgia are closed at least through April 24.

According to the Walton Chorus Facebook page:

“We are hopeful that we will still sing these pieces and perhaps make in-class videos of these great arrangements to share once we return to school. Our student officers did a terrific job of coming up with this year’s theme and with song ideas. Hopefully, we will still be able to make this concert a reality, but perhaps in a different format.”

The organizers of the Pope Band Recycling Event slated for April 25 sent us word that that event too, is being cancelled.

We’re going to temporarily suspend updating our Events Calendar for the time being, until public outings are allowed to resume.

But, we do want to know if you have cancellations/postponements/reschedulings of events, so we can share them with the community.

Please e-mail: calendar@eastcobbnews.com and we will post those changes in our news blog as part of our continuing coverage of our community’s response to the Coronavirus crisis.

If your business closed and is reopening, please e-mail us: editor@eastcobbnews.com and we will place it in our East Cobb Open for Business Directory (see the link below). We want to help local businesses get back on their feet with this free listing!

Contact us at the same e-mail address for news about efforts to assist those in need, health care workers, first responders and others on the frontlines of combatting Coronavirus in East Cobb.

Tuesday’s post about local businesses and people volunteering their time and resources to feed health care workers is a good example of what we’re trying to highlight.

Thank you for your patience and for keeping us updated on your group or organization’s activities.

The dead of winter is the time when spring, summer and fall festival news is announced. Following a recent post about the 2020 date in May for the Taste of East Cobb comes word about some changes with the Noshfest at Temple Kol Emeth.

Noshfest organizers announced over the weekend that the 10th anniversary of the Jewish food and cultural festival is taking place in late August, instead of over the Labor Day weekend.

More details are to follow, including ticketing for Nosh at Night.

The dates for the 2020 Marietta Greek Festival also have been announced, and for the 30th anniversary of the event, it’s keeping to its usual spring time slot, May 15-17 at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church on Trickum Road.

The Greek Festival hours are Friday, May 15 from 3-11 p.m. (with free admission from 3-5 p.m.); Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m; and Sunday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
