88th North Georgia State Fair continues through Oct. 3

North Georgia State Fair
The Georgia Mountain Ride at the North Georgia State Fair.

After being cancelled in 2020 for the first time since World War II, the North Georgia State Fair has returned to Jim Miller Park in Cobb County, and will continue through Oct. 3.

The 88th annual event is sponsored by Superior Plumbing, and the schedule is

Monday through Thursday 4pm-11pm, Fridays 4pm to midnight, Saturdays 10am to midnight, and Sundays 12:30pm-10pm.

The fair typically attracts more than 300,000 people, and heavy turnout is expected again this year, due in part to the COVID-related cancellation a year ago, and superb weather in the forecast for the next week.

Gate admission is $10, children 10 and under are free. Ride tickets are $1.25 each, $20.00 for 21 tickets, $50.00 for 55 tickets and $100 for 120 tickets. All rides require more than one ticket. Parking is $5. ATM machines are located on the midway. Online advance discount tickets can be purchased for $7, children 10 and under free.

Here’s a thumbnail overview of what’s at the fair this year, including some new events and features, including concerts and further ticket information.

There are some health protocols that have been put into place. Visitors will not be required to wear masks in the outdoor areas of Jim Miller Park, but since it is a Cobb County facility, masks will be required while indoors.

That’s because of a Cobb County Government order mandating indoor mask use at county facilities.

There will be hand-sanitizing stations located throughout the fairgrounds and social-distancing will be implemented where necessary.

From Oct. 1-3 those signing up for an onsite vaccination appointment will gain free admission and unlimited rides. The Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be available at the Jim Miller Park Events Center.

Advance sign-up is required; for English, go to cobbvax.coreresponse.org and for Spanish, go to cobbvaxesp.coreresponse.org.

All those who receive the vaccine at the fair will be entered into a drawing for a $500 Visa gift card courtesy of Superior Plumbing.

The fair website can be found here; Jim Miller Park (2245 Callaway Road, SW, Marietta).

The Avenue East Cobb launches Fall Fest, other new events

The Avenue East Cobb Fall Fest

Earlier this month we posted news about a fall comedy series that’s underway at The Avenue East Cobb, now managed by North American Properties, the Avalon developer and redeveloper of Colony Square and Atlantic Station.

NAP’s plans at The Avenue call for an expansion of public events, and they’ve released further details, including several other first-time events.

That includes the inaugural Fall Fest, on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 3-6 p.m. Family friendly activities, culinary delights, live music, and a cornhole tournament hosted by CornholeATL are part of the festivities, and NAP says more details are coming soon.

On Thursday is the first Ladies’ Night Out with details below, along with other seasonal events that have been lined up:

Avenue Active:

Every Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. in September and October, wellness enthusiasts can experience barre classes led by onsite fitness studio barre3. Instructors will lead a full-body workout that combines strength conditioning, cardio and mindfulness, designed to leave attendees feeling balanced and empowered. Guests are encouraged to bring their own mats and to grab an Active Avenue punch card upon checking-in. For every class attended, guests will receive a punch on their card, which can be redeemed for exclusive branded items for every four classes attended.

Comedy Live at The Avenue:

Start your month off with big laughs during Comedy Live at The Avenue, happening the first Monday of the month now through November. From 7 to 8 p.m., attendees can unwind during live performances from Punchline Comedy Club, while enjoying beverages available for purchase from onsite restaurant Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar. The next Comedy Live at The Avenue will be hosted on October 4. Guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the show. Shows are recommended for ages 13 and older.

In addition to seasonal events, The Avenue East Cobb will host its first-ever Ladies Night Out on Thursday, September 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. The event invites women to indulge in an evening full of shopping, beauty, entertainment, giveaways and more. Upon arrival, attendees should check-in at the pop-up Concierge station, located at the Central Boulevard, to receive a stroll map highlighting all available offers from participating retailers and restaurants, such as Ann Taylor, Injectables Express, KSquared Artistan Boutique, and Stockyard Burger and Bones. The first 50 ladies to check-in will receive a swag bag.

All events will be hosted in the Central Boulevard between Kale Me Crazy and Banana Republic. For more information on upcoming happenings at The Avenue East Cobb, visit: https://www.avenueeastcobb.com/events/

All events are complimentary and open to the public to attend.

“We’re excited to bring new adventures to East Cobb and look forward to creating a new community hub where familiar faces gather to shop, eat and socialize,” said Sara Hemmer, director of marketing at NAP, in a statement.

East Cobb weekend events: Campmeeting; fishing rodeo; more

Marietta Campmeeting, East Cobb weekend events

It’s been more than a year since we’ve done this: rounded up selected weekend events from our calendar listings.

While we’ll be rolling out our full calendar listings over the next few weeks, below we’ve linked to some coverage of things going on that we’ve placed on our main news channel.

That’s how we’ve been posting about the rare events that have taken place during the COVID-19 pandemic; gradually this news will shift over to our main calendar listings page.

For the time being, that listings page is under reconstruction of sorts; shortly we’ll get it back to where it was before March 2020.

Something different with this revival of the calendar is to include concerts and other special events from beyond East Cobb, but that aren’t too far away.

Now, on to some community happenings this weekend:

MARIETTA CAMPMEETING

Starting Friday and continuing through July 18, the 183rd edition of the religious revival takes place at the Marietta Campground (2300 Roswell Road). All services and other events are free and open to the public.

COBB PARKS FISHING RODEOS

Take the kiddos (ages 3-16) out to Hyde Farm (726 Hyde Road) or Ebenezer Downs Park (4057 Ebenezer Road) Saturday morning for some competitive fun. The cost is $5 per child and you’ll need to bring your own gear and bait.

FREE VACCINATION EVENT

Town Center at Cobb (400 Barrett Parkway) will distribute free COVID-19 vaccines from 1-7 Saturday with Emergent Testing. Members of the public can get their choice of the Moderna, Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson vaccines by coming to mall’s upper level food court next to the Smoothie King. You’re asked to pre-register here: bit.ly/TCCEmergentTesting and will need to bring a photo ID. If you’re getting a second dose, you’re asked to bring proof of the first shot.

“THE SANDLOT” SCREENING

Big Shanty Park (2050 Kennesaw Due West Road) is the venue for Saturday’s 8 p.m. screening of The Sandlot as part of the Kaiser Permanente Movie Series. Bring your own food and snacks after registering at the link above.

ELTON JOHN TRIBUTE

The Mable House Barnes Ampitheater is kicking off its 2021 schedule on Saturday with “Remember When Rock Was Young,” a tribute event in honor of the retiring pop music legend. Award-winning, singer/actor/pianist Craig A. Meyer is the host. Tickets start at $25 and can be ordered at the Ticketmaster link above.

Chattahoochee Nature Center to hold 43rd Possum Trot 10K

Possum Trot 10K

Submitted information and photo:

An Atlanta tradition for 43 years, the Possum Trot 10K has allowed runners to take part in a great race along the beautiful banks of the Chattahoochee River while helping save animals and fund environmental education at the Chattahoochee Nature Center (CNC). This year, the runners had the option to select an in-person or virtual race. The in-person race begins at 7 a.m. on June 19.

Participants will receive free professional photos as well as a commemorative t-shirt. Winners in each age group will receive medals. Runners receive free admission to CNC’s 127 acres all day.

Tamara Kinmon, CNC Event Program Director, said, “We are so excited to be able to offer runners an in-person and virtual race option in 2021. After having to move to an all-virtual race in 2020 we look forward to the 2021 participants starting in waves and enjoying the flat, fast race along the Chattahoochee River.”

All proceeds from the race benefit the Chattahoochee Nature Center’s environmental education programs focused on the Chattahoochee River and its watershed as well as CNC’s wildlife rehabilitation efforts.

So far this year, CNC has taken in over 400 injured animals. The on-site staff works tirelessly to help the injured animals and return them to their habitats, if possible.

In addition to helping wildlife, CNC traditionally hosts more than 40,000 students from more than 400 schools in the metro Atlanta area, teaching them all about the importance and science of nature. For many students, CNC is the first time they are out in nature or on the Chattahoochee River. This past school year we offered virtual field trip options to keep students connected to nature.

“We are grateful to our presenting sponsor Northside Hospital,” said DeAnn Fordham, Senior Director for Development at Marketing at CNC. “Their support allows us to implement our health and wellness opportunities and connect people to nature.”

Please note: There is local construction in the area and the Chattahoochee Nature Center can only be accessed from the east near Azalea Drive. CNC is open during construction and we can’t wait to see visitors this summer. For more information, please visit https://www.chattnaturecenter.org/visit/.

Cobb NAACP to hold Juneteenth celebration in Marietta Square

Submitted information:Cobb NAACP Juneteenth

Cobb County Branch of the NAACP invites everyone to celebrate Juneteenth Saturday, June 19, in Glover Park on the Marietta Square. The free cultural festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and feature live music and entertainment, arts and crafts, vendors, face painting, food, a health fair and free health screenings. Masks are recommended. If you are interested in being a vendor or volunteering, contact the Cobb NAACP at 770-425-5757.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of end of slavery. Dating back to 1865, it was June 19 when Union soldiers led by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and all enslaved people were free. This was two and a half years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The celebration of June 19 was coined “Juneteenth” and grew with more participation from descendants. Juneteenth today celebrates African American freedom while encouraging self-development and respect for all cultures.

2021 Taste of East Cobb cancelled; Taste of Marietta delayed

Taste of East Cobb

Food festival update:

The organizers of the Taste of East Cobb announced recently that the event is being cancelled for the second year in a row due to continuing COVID-19 safety protocols.

The fundraising event for the Walton High School band programs is now slated for May 2022.

Last year the Taste of East Cobb was initially delayed to last fall, then to May 2021.

This year’s the Taste of Marietta, which was scheduled for late April, is being rescheduled to Oct. 24, according to the Marietta Visitors Bureau, which organizes the event.

In a release issued Monday the MVB said that “the safety and health of the community, vendors, artists, guests, and staff is the festival’s top priority. The Marietta Visitors Bureau will be monitoring and following recommendations from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Governor Kemp’s Executive Orders.”

Another major event in East Cobb already has been canceled for September. For the second year in a row, there will not be an EAST COBBER Parade and Festival for the same reasons.

EAST COBBER Parade and Festival cancelled for 2021

East Cobber parade cancelled
The annual East Cobber parade and festival features dozens of community participants.

For the second year in a row, the EAST COBBER Parade and Festival has been cancelled due to COVID-19 issues.

Publisher Cynthia Rozzo said in a message in the current March-April issue of the magazine that public health compliance concerns prompted the cancellation of the event, which had been slated for Sept. 18.

Although initially hopeful due to the arrival of vaccines, she said that “under current CDC guidelines for community events and large gatherings we could not figure out how to keep participants and guests safe.”

The logistics include several months of planning and involve many community groups and organizations. “Those planning steps have been hampered by the outbreak and the uncertainty about it,” Rozzo said.

This was to have been the 25th anniversary of the parade, which travels down Johnson Ferry Road from Mt. Bethel Elementary School to Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, where a community festival follows.

Rozzo started the free community magazine in 1993, publishing 11 times a year. But after the COVID-related business closings last year, she has reduced publication of the EAST COBBER, which is mailed to more than 22,000 subscribers, to six times a year.
