Marietta History Museum to hold free MLK Jr. holiday events

The Marietta History Center is offering free admission Saturday, Jan. 15, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.Marietta History Museum MLK Jr. holiday events

The center is conducting Diverse Cobb programming that includes the “Lemon Street Chroncles,” a new oral history DVD about the Lemon Street High School.

It was Cobb County’s only all-black high school until 1967, when segregation in public schools in Cobb and Marietta ended.

The DVD, created by alumnus Tim Penn, includes interviews with other graduates and will be screened several times on Saturday.

Also featured at the museum is “Marietta 1899: Color Captured in Black & White.” It’s a special exhibit of the work of New York photographer James Shaw, who visited Marietta in 1899. The exhibit includes images of the Marietta Square, the Marietta National Cemetery, Kennesaw Avenue, Kennesaw Mountain and rural Cobb County.

Shaw’s visit included the Federal Memorial Day celebration, with many of those in attendance being African-American.

“A truer version of life as it was, undiluted by the whitewashing of history,” the exhibit states. “While bias of a white perspective remains, Shaw chose to include the activities of both races, thus presenting multiple shades of color in black and white photography.”

That exhibit also will be featured at the museum. from May 19-28.

The Marietta Museum of History will have free admission from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Saturday. Screenings of the “Lemon Street Chronicles,” which lasts an hour and a half, are at 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

The museum is located at 1 Depot Street, Marietta. For more information click here.

UPDATE: The Avenue East Cobb postpones ‘Boo Bash’ to Sunday

The Avenue East Cobb Boo Bash

We posted last week about The Avenue East Cobb’s Halloween festival, called the “Boo Bash,” that was set to take place on Saturday.

Due to the wet weather, those events are being pushed back to Sunday, including trick-or-treating and a Mega Awesome Costume contest conducted by East Cobb Church.

The Boo Bash is now slated for 1-3 p.m. Sunday at The Avenue (4475 Roswell Road).

A scheduled outdoor viewing party for Saturday’s Georgia-Florida football game has been cancelled.

There’s a 60 percent chance of rain during the day Saturday, dropping to 30 percent Saturday night. Highs will be in the mid-60s and lows in the mid-40s.

On Sunday, Halloween, will be partly sunny with highs in the high-60s and lows also in the mid-40s.

The Avenue East Cobb to hold ‘Boo Bash,’ UGA football watch party

Submitted information:Avenue East Cobb Boo Bash

Ghouls, goblins and football enthusiasts unite. A fang-tastic fall experience is brewing at Avenue East Cobb as the lifestyle center prepares to host its first-ever Boo Bash and Game Day viewing party on Saturday, October 30. The Halloween-themed community celebration, happening from 1 to 6:30 p.m. in partnership with East Cobb Church, will include spooky-fun festivities for boos of all ages.

Starting at 1 p.m., Avenue East Cobb will be activated with a monstrous trick-or-treating family adventure. Upon arrival, guests should check-in at the pop-up Concierge in the Central Boulevard to grab a stroll map highlighting treat stops. After gathering all the goodies, Boo Bash attendees are encouraged to meet back in the Central Boulevard at 2 p.m. for East Cobb Church’s Mega Awesome Costume Contest featuring silly challenges, music and dancing. The winner of the costume contest will receive an Avenue East Cobb Experience Basket of items from onsite retailers and restaurants. While exploring the center, revelers can indulge in complimentary face painting, balloon art and photo-worthy roaming entertainment.

A doggy costume contest will also be hosted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. by Gussied Up Pet Boutique, a new pop-up retailer opening at Avenue East Cobb on October 21. Created by Beth Simpson at the height of the pandemic, Gussied Up Pet Boutique offers a large collection of pet clothing and accessories; toys and bedding; and a wide range of gifts for animal lovers.

Inspired by her dog Gus and the massive increase in pet adoptions, Simpson launched her first short-term store at Avalon during its inaugural Holiday Market in 2020, an idea initially sparked by Simpson’s interest in opening at the Alpharetta mixed-use destination. The success of the shop’s debut led Simpson to extend her lease, participate in Avalon’s 2021 Spring Market and prospect other locations with North American Properties (NAP).

“NAP is unrivaled in creating community-driven environments where retailers and restaurants can thrive and forge authentic relationships with shoppers. After having such a positive experience with the team at Avalon, I knew this was a partnership I wanted to expand on,” said Simpson. “Pets are such an important part of our lives and I love building inviting spaces where owners feel welcomed to bring their furry friends in-store and treat them with exceptional products. We can’t wait to meet our neighbors in East Cobb and invite everyone to join us on October 24 for the grand opening celebration.”

The doggy costume contest will be held at Gussied Up Pet Boutique, located next to Bravura and Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa. One winner will be announced at 3 p.m. during the Mega Awesome Costume Contest and receive a special Gussied Up Pet Boutique dog basket. Regular shopping hours for the store will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Learn more about Gussied Up Pet Boutique online.

Following the Boo Bash, football fans are invited to show their team spirit as the Central Boulevard transforms into the ultimate outdoor tailgate zone ahead of the Georgia versus Florida rivalry showdown. The football viewing party kicks off at 3 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted on a giant LED screen.

All Boo Bash and Game Day activities will be located in the Central Boulevard between Kale Me Crazy and Banana Republic. Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar will also provide drinks for purchase at its pop-up bar in the Central Boulevard all afternoon long. Guests are encouraged to grab to-go food from Avenue East Cobb restaurants to dine on during the game.

88th North Georgia State Fair continues through Oct. 3

North Georgia State Fair
The Georgia Mountain Ride at the North Georgia State Fair.

After being cancelled in 2020 for the first time since World War II, the North Georgia State Fair has returned to Jim Miller Park in Cobb County, and will continue through Oct. 3.

The 88th annual event is sponsored by Superior Plumbing, and the schedule is

Monday through Thursday 4pm-11pm, Fridays 4pm to midnight, Saturdays 10am to midnight, and Sundays 12:30pm-10pm.

The fair typically attracts more than 300,000 people, and heavy turnout is expected again this year, due in part to the COVID-related cancellation a year ago, and superb weather in the forecast for the next week.

Gate admission is $10, children 10 and under are free. Ride tickets are $1.25 each, $20.00 for 21 tickets, $50.00 for 55 tickets and $100 for 120 tickets. All rides require more than one ticket. Parking is $5. ATM machines are located on the midway. Online advance discount tickets can be purchased for $7, children 10 and under free.

Here’s a thumbnail overview of what’s at the fair this year, including some new events and features, including concerts and further ticket information.

There are some health protocols that have been put into place. Visitors will not be required to wear masks in the outdoor areas of Jim Miller Park, but since it is a Cobb County facility, masks will be required while indoors.

That’s because of a Cobb County Government order mandating indoor mask use at county facilities.

There will be hand-sanitizing stations located throughout the fairgrounds and social-distancing will be implemented where necessary.

From Oct. 1-3 those signing up for an onsite vaccination appointment will gain free admission and unlimited rides. The Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be available at the Jim Miller Park Events Center.

Advance sign-up is required; for English, go to cobbvax.coreresponse.org and for Spanish, go to cobbvaxesp.coreresponse.org.

All those who receive the vaccine at the fair will be entered into a drawing for a $500 Visa gift card courtesy of Superior Plumbing.

The fair website can be found here; Jim Miller Park (2245 Callaway Road, SW, Marietta).

Rotary Club of East Cobb’s Dog Days Run returns in 2021

Dog Days Run

A little less than two weeks out (Saturday, Aug. 7), the Rotary Club of East Cobb is staging its Dog Days Run this year after cancelling due to COVID-19 concerns.

Registration continues for the 16th annual event, which once again starts and ends at the McCleskey Family-East Cobb YMCA (1055 E. Piedmont Road).

Here’s more from the Rotary announcement about what’s in store, and a link to the sign up page (and we thank the club for their sponsored post on our newsletter as well):

This 16th year is a special treat – we’re back in action, in person. All participants–young/old, runners/non-runners, local/worldwide–will band together to raise money for local Cobb charities.

Our “Dog Days” 5K honors the heat and humidity of summer. Over the years, the Rotary Club of East Cobb has donated more than $500,000 from race proceeds to local and international service projects!

East Cobb weekend events: Campmeeting; fishing rodeo; more

Marietta Campmeeting, East Cobb weekend events

It’s been more than a year since we’ve done this: rounded up selected weekend events from our calendar listings.

While we’ll be rolling out our full calendar listings over the next few weeks, below we’ve linked to some coverage of things going on that we’ve placed on our main news channel.

That’s how we’ve been posting about the rare events that have taken place during the COVID-19 pandemic; gradually this news will shift over to our main calendar listings page.

For the time being, that listings page is under reconstruction of sorts; shortly we’ll get it back to where it was before March 2020.

Something different with this revival of the calendar is to include concerts and other special events from beyond East Cobb, but that aren’t too far away.

Now, on to some community happenings this weekend:

MARIETTA CAMPMEETING

Starting Friday and continuing through July 18, the 183rd edition of the religious revival takes place at the Marietta Campground (2300 Roswell Road). All services and other events are free and open to the public.

COBB PARKS FISHING RODEOS

Take the kiddos (ages 3-16) out to Hyde Farm (726 Hyde Road) or Ebenezer Downs Park (4057 Ebenezer Road) Saturday morning for some competitive fun. The cost is $5 per child and you’ll need to bring your own gear and bait.

FREE VACCINATION EVENT

Town Center at Cobb (400 Barrett Parkway) will distribute free COVID-19 vaccines from 1-7 Saturday with Emergent Testing. Members of the public can get their choice of the Moderna, Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson vaccines by coming to mall’s upper level food court next to the Smoothie King. You’re asked to pre-register here: bit.ly/TCCEmergentTesting and will need to bring a photo ID. If you’re getting a second dose, you’re asked to bring proof of the first shot.

“THE SANDLOT” SCREENING

Big Shanty Park (2050 Kennesaw Due West Road) is the venue for Saturday’s 8 p.m. screening of The Sandlot as part of the Kaiser Permanente Movie Series. Bring your own food and snacks after registering at the link above.

ELTON JOHN TRIBUTE

The Mable House Barnes Ampitheater is kicking off its 2021 schedule on Saturday with “Remember When Rock Was Young,” a tribute event in honor of the retiring pop music legend. Award-winning, singer/actor/pianist Craig A. Meyer is the host. Tickets start at $25 and can be ordered at the Ticketmaster link above.

Chattahoochee Nature Center to hold 43rd Possum Trot 10K

Possum Trot 10K

Submitted information and photo:

An Atlanta tradition for 43 years, the Possum Trot 10K has allowed runners to take part in a great race along the beautiful banks of the Chattahoochee River while helping save animals and fund environmental education at the Chattahoochee Nature Center (CNC). This year, the runners had the option to select an in-person or virtual race. The in-person race begins at 7 a.m. on June 19.

Participants will receive free professional photos as well as a commemorative t-shirt. Winners in each age group will receive medals. Runners receive free admission to CNC’s 127 acres all day.

Tamara Kinmon, CNC Event Program Director, said, “We are so excited to be able to offer runners an in-person and virtual race option in 2021. After having to move to an all-virtual race in 2020 we look forward to the 2021 participants starting in waves and enjoying the flat, fast race along the Chattahoochee River.”

All proceeds from the race benefit the Chattahoochee Nature Center’s environmental education programs focused on the Chattahoochee River and its watershed as well as CNC’s wildlife rehabilitation efforts.

So far this year, CNC has taken in over 400 injured animals. The on-site staff works tirelessly to help the injured animals and return them to their habitats, if possible.

In addition to helping wildlife, CNC traditionally hosts more than 40,000 students from more than 400 schools in the metro Atlanta area, teaching them all about the importance and science of nature. For many students, CNC is the first time they are out in nature or on the Chattahoochee River. This past school year we offered virtual field trip options to keep students connected to nature.

“We are grateful to our presenting sponsor Northside Hospital,” said DeAnn Fordham, Senior Director for Development at Marketing at CNC. “Their support allows us to implement our health and wellness opportunities and connect people to nature.”

Please note: There is local construction in the area and the Chattahoochee Nature Center can only be accessed from the east near Azalea Drive. CNC is open during construction and we can’t wait to see visitors this summer. For more information, please visit https://www.chattnaturecenter.org/visit/.
