East Cobb teen holds basketball clinic for special needs kids

East Cobb teen special needs basketball clinic

As he has done for the last four years, Trevor Goldenberg, an East Cobb teenager, took timeout on Election Day to hold a basketball camp for special needs kids.

We profiled him three years ago when he conducted the clinic at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy.

Trevor started the “For Threeee” clinic when he was at Dodgen Middle School. Now, he’s a 16-year-old junior at Walton High School.

His mother Donna sent the following information and photos about the 5th annual “For Threeee” clinic, which was held in conjunction with East Marietta Basketball:

“Participants went through stations with their assigned volunteer and improved their overall skills. They even played some small games with other participants. But most importantly, they had a great time, participants had smiles on their faces and did not want to leave. Thanks to East Marietta Basketball and East Lake Chick-Fil-A for sponsoring this fantastic event.”

Cobb dentist collecting candy for ‘Operation Troop Treats’

Cobb dentist Operation Troop Treats

Submitted information:

From November 1-6, Franklin Dental will be participating in the 9th annual Operation Troop Treats campaign where children can bring in Halloween candy in exchange for a toy. The collected candy, along with dental kits and other goodies, will be used to fill care packages for deployed troops, local military units, veterans, and first responders. Not only does this program promote healthy smiles for kids, but it is also a great cause to support the men and women who serve our country and communities.

This year, Franklin Dental in Smyrna is hoping to beat their record of 556 lbs of candy donated to troops and first responders. Operation Troop Treats program is sponsored by Benevis, a national dental services organization, and not only does it promote healthy smiles for kids, but it is also a great cause to support the men and women who serve our country and communities.

Franklin Dental began participating in Operation Troop Treats in 2012 to say thank you to those who serve our country each day. Many of their patients’ families, doctors, and staff are current or former service members, so this program provides a meaningful way for the practice to give back. Here are a few additional points which make this story special to our community:

Here are a few additional points which make this story special to our community:

Special Needs Cobb golf tournament fundraiser nets $45K

Special Needs Cobb fundraiser

Submitted information:

Special Needs Cobb, a local non-profit that provides respite, residential and resources for special needs people and their families, hosted its 23rd annual Golf Invitational fundraiser on Oct. 11, 2021, at Dogwood Golf Club in Austell, Ga. The organization raised nearly $45,000, a first-time record for them.

The golf invitational is the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year, and it was unfortunately cancelled last year for the first time in more than two decades due to COVID-19. The impact to the organization was multiplied as SNC closed Cobb’s only facilities-based weekend respite house during the pandemic, eliminating the fees that typically support much-needed operational expenses.

“The funds we raise at the annual Golf Invitational are used to maintain and operate our weekend respite program, which is dedicated to special needs children and adults, as well as our 23 adult group homes,” said Debbie Day, executive director. “Our service and reach in Cobb County is unique. Up to 40 percent of our residents are orphans or have no family connection, and the work we do ensures they have a safe, loving home right in the community.”

The “Play Your Way, Golf All Day” event ran from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. with food, prizes, a raffle and goody bags provided. Sponsors included Cobb EMC Foundation, Butler Creek Animal Hospital, Nadler Biernath: Special Needs and Elder Law, Alterman Commercial Real Estate, Robert McLean DDS, Blad & Associates, WatchtheDeer.com and more than 20 hole sponsors.

In addition to money raised for Resources, Respite and Residential services in Cobb County, the golf fundraiser attracted 100 new donors, 72 golfers and 105 attendees. Approximately $10,000 in prizes were awarded.

East Cobb man raises $20K in ‘mega’ swim for 9/11 aid group

East Cobb man mega swim 9/11

An update to the story we ran in late August about James Whitcomb, who was preparing for a 10-mile “mega” swim at the Mountain View Aquatic Center to raise funds for a 9/11 organization:

He reports that his “Swim2Help” the Tunnel to Towers non-profit on Sept. 10 raised $20,601, from 119 donors.

Here’s his report—dated Sept. 11—and some photos from the pool:

The 10-mile MEGA swim was accomplished yesterday at 12:47 p.m. EDT.  (I began swimming at 6:14 a.m.)

To this moment collectively 105 supporters have contributed $19,017.00. Wow! Well done! Thank you!

It was a great day to swim with wonderful encouragement all throughout.

We had a very precise lap counter and time keeper in Suresh Sharma. Swim time was 5 hours and 48 minutes. I took 3 breaks which totaled 45 minutes.

My wife and our eldest, Philip, set up and kept everything operating pool side.

The Japan American Society of Georgia hosted the live stream. Many have commented that Yoshi Domoto should be a newscaster – he’s got the looks and voice. Go Yoshi-san! You can see a replay at https://youtu.be/C2U6rNsH65M.

Support swimmers (Natalie, Stephen and Jim Reed) provided me much needed motivation to keep swimming despite cramping and general fatigue.

As always, the staff at Mountain View Aquatic Center were phenomenally supportive. From setting up and breaking down to lifeguarding and sharing food with hungry supporters!

Many people stopped in to cheer and keep spirits high.

Each of you played a very important role by sharing your resources. Your time, money donation, sweat and good cheer is very much appreciated. Our vets, first responders and their families will be helped and I know are grateful.

In closing, I sincerely thank each of you for your support of T2T (www.t2t.org) via my MEGA swim. Many hands do make light work and your hands helped make this task easy.

Cobb Interfaith Habitat Coalition

Submitted information and photos:

On Sunday September 19, Habitat for Humanity of NW Metro Atlanta and the Cobb Interfaith Habitat Coalition (CIHC) dedicated the coalition’s 21st Habitat home in Austell. The house was the first build started in 2021.

Future Homeowner Rachel Coates has built alongside coalition volunteers for nine weeks and is looking forward to moving into her own home with her children. Rachel is a 47-year-old single mom to Jeremy (13), and Polleen (12), and she works as a caregiver at Arbor Terrace at Burnt Hickory.

The Kenya native has lived in Cobb County for 13 years. Their family currently lives in a two-bedroom apartment in Marietta, which has become too small for them. She is very grateful for the opportunity to partner with Habitat and is excited about her future prospects of finally owning her own home.

The 2021 Coalition includes 12 religious organizations and four corporate members.

Faith partners include:

  • Due West United Methodist
  • Smyrna First United Methodist

The annual coalition uses the motto, “We Build to Coexist, We Coexist to Build.”

“For 21 years, this faithful, cross-denominational coalition has represented the best of our county, and always finds a way to build, no matter the challenges,” said Coalition co-chair and Habitat board member, Henry Hene. “It was very rewarding to again be building side by side with this special homeowner who worked so hard to make a better life for the next generation.”

“For more than two decades, this coalition has been a light in this community and a shining example of what people can do when they come together to improve lives,” said Jessica Gill, CEO, Habitat for Humanity of NW Metro Atlanta. “We are grateful for their unwavering dedication to our mission and bettering our community though stable and sustainable housing.”

Cobb Diaper Day to be held virtually with October collections

Cobb Diaper Day

Submitted information and photo:

The Cobb Diaper Day Committee announces that it is holding its 13th Annual Diaper Day virtually, due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual community-wide effort to collect diapers for low-income families is occurring throughout September and October. All diaper donations will be given to the Cobb Douglas Public Health Teen Pregnancy Program, Communities in Schools of Georgia in Marietta/Cobb County,  LiveSafe Resources, MUST Ministries, Ser Familia, Simple Needs GA, South Cobb United, Sweetwater Mission and The Center for Family Resources for distribution to help ease some of the burdens of the thousands of families in critical need.

Organizations, companies and individuals are encouraged to donate to the Barbara Hickey Children’s Fund (managed by Cobb Community Foundation), purchase diapers through their Amazon Wish-list and hold diaper drives, especially during Diaper Need Awareness Week, being held September 27 – October 3, 2021. Also, community-wide collection dates are October 13 from 8 am to 4 pm and October 27 from 4 pm to 6 pm at Cobb EMC Solar Flower Garden in Marietta, Georgia.

Through the efforts of the Cobb Diaper Day Committee, founded by the late Barbara Hickey, more than have been donated to assist low-income families in Cobb County. The goal this year is to donate more than 100,000 diapers.

Low-income families often have the daily stress of choosing between food and diapers. Prolonged wearing of a wet diaper causes diaper rash, and a crying baby leads to more stress in the home. Low-income families also face the facts that:

  • Food stamps do not include hygiene products, such as diapers.
  • On average, the cost to purchase diapers is approximately $100/month.
  • Daycare centers require parents to provide their own diapers.

Barbara Hickey reminded us all that, oftentimes, it is the little things in our lives that make the biggest difference, when she envisioned the community coming together to support local families in need.

Donations are being accepted online at www.cobbdiaperday.com.

After 3.7M meals, Cobb Community Food Fleet program ends

Cobb Community Food Fleet ends
Cars lined up at Mosaic Church in Marietta to pick up food boxes being delivered by the Cobb Community Food Fleet.

Submitted information and photos:

On September 16, 2021, after fifteen months, the operations of the Cobb Community Food Fleet will come to an end.

Since the end of May of 2020, a group of nonprofits, churches, businesses and government entities has been responsible for the receipt and distribution of 168,000 boxes of food being received and distributed throughout Cobb County and beyond.  That equates to 4.4 million pounds of fresh produce and proteins, the equivalent of nearly 3.7 million meals.  The group that has become known as the “Cobb Community Food Fleet” includes fourteen organizations that picked up the food from Truist Park, the Galleria, the Cobb Energy Centre and Sweetwater Mission, subsequently delivering it to over 50 other fleet members (primarily churches and other nonprofits) throughout the county.  Thanks to S.A. White and Mobilized Fuels who provided the diesel needed to run the trailers, refrigeration was never lacking.

The effort has been a joint initiative of Cobb Community Foundation and Noonday Association of Churches.  Costs were largely underwritten by the Atlanta Braves, who also contributed the use of the stadium’s massive refrigerator and loading docks as the first distribution center.  Cobb County’s Board of Commissioners provided CARES Act and ARP Act funding of $540,000 to purchase food boxes, but the vast majority of the food was provided through the USDA’s Farmers to Families program.  What made Cobb such an attractive partner for the program’s food distributors was having a central distribution center at easily accessible facilities with subsequent deliveries throughout the entire county being handled by others.  In this case, a “fleet” of nonprofits.

The need for a centralized distribution center went away when the USDA’s Farmers to Families program ended, but the need for food remains.  Cobb Community Foundation took this issue to the Cobb Board of Commissioners earlier this year.  The Board of Commissioners ultimately allocated $1.5 million of American Rescue Plan funding for the purchase of food by Cobb nonprofits.

Says Shari Martin, President and CEO of Cobb Community Foundation, “We will continue to work to ensure that food remains available when needed and where needed.”  To that end, Noonday Association of Churches, the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Cobb Community Foundation are working on an upcoming event for all nonprofit food providers at which attendees will be presented with census tract-level data on food insecurity to explore opportunities for collaboration.

East Cobb resident takes up swimming challenge for 9/11 organization

East Cobb resident 9/11 swimming challenge
“I’m not really a swimmer,” said Jim Whitcomb, who’s taking part in a 10-mile swim Sept. 10 to help the Tunnel to Towers “in my own little way.”

It’s been nearly a year since East Cobb resident James Whitcomb learned about the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a non-profit set up after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks to provide seriously injured first responders and military veterans with mortgage-free homes and other housing assistance.

“I thought, ‘What a great foundation? What can I do to help to in my own little way?’ ” Whitcomb said.

To mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11, Tunnel to Towers has organized a “Swim2Help” campaign to encourage donations.

Whitcomb, who splashed in the many lakes of his native Minnesota as a young boy and has lived in East Cobb for 20 years, admits that “I’m not really a swimmer.”

But for several months now, he’s been building up his endurance with weekday swims at the Mountain View Aquatic Center.

On Saturday, he logged seven miles, his longest swim yet, in about four hours, to get ready for the climax to his “Swim to Help” effort that’s been underway in other respects.

Next Friday, Sept. 10, he’s undertaking a 10-mile swim at the Mountain View pool, with some rest and hydration breaks, to get over a substantial fundraising goal he set for himself

Whitcomb has raised nearly $15,000 of a targeted $25,000, mostly through word-of-mouth efforts.

“I’m not a social media guy,” he said, adding that a flyer he posted on Facebook didn’t generate much of a response.

He has created his own website to explain what he’s doing, and why, with some video footage here, here and here.

He’s broken down what he calls his “mega” swim like this: 52,800 feet, or 17,600 yards, or 352 laps in a 25-yard pool.

Whitcomb is inviting the public to come cheer him on, and “make sure I’m still afloat.”

The swim begins at 6 a.m. sharp, and he estimated it will take 6-7 hours with those breaks.

Donations can be made at this link anytime, and many of the donations range between $25-$100.

Whitcomb, a finance executive with J.P. Morgan Chase, said donors can offer any amount they wish.

Wrote one donor: “I work hard to swim ONE mile at Mt. View Aquatic center. You’re awesome. We support T2T also. Good luck.”

East Cobb-based tutoring group to hold Red Cross blood drive

East Cobb tutoring group blood drive

Walton High School students Abhishek and Abhinav Kona reached out to pass along the word that the tutoring group they helped co-found, the American Assimilation Helpline, will be holding a blood drive over the weekend.

They and Elly Kang of the Marist School started the non-profit in 2017 to provide free, virtual, one-on-one academic assistance to students from low income, immigrant and refugee backgrounds. Since then, they estimate they’ve connected with more than 750 students with the help of more than 400 tutors (some of whom are seen in the photo above).

The AAH also has been getting involved in community efforts closer to home, including the Cobb Adopt-A-Mile Program, CPR training and blood drives.

Their next blood drive event in conjunction with the American Red Cross will take place on Sunday, Sept. 5, from 2-7 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation (1200 Indian Hills Parkway).

As for the ongoing tutoring program with AAH, Abhishek and Abhinav report that the subjects include English, Math, Science and Social Studies, as well as Computer Science.
“The unique setup of pairing the student and tutor for a focused 1hr tutoring session provides a significant opportunity for the student and tutor to freely work on individual needs and help with better understanding of the subject. Today, AAH! has students from all over the United States and countries across the globe, including South Korea, Japan, India, Brazil, and Romania.

“AAH! Founders and tutors from different backgrounds and believe in ‘Knowledge is power and knowledge shared power multiplied’ and teaching is rewarding experience. AAH looks forward to reaching out to students in need of help while providing an opportunity for those wanting to reduce educational gaps between marginalized and privileged students.”

Raffensperger is a Republican from Johns Creek who is in his first term, and he has announced he will be seeking re-election in 2022.

He has been in the national spotlight since the presidential election last year, when former President Donald Trump’s campaign made accusations of voter fraud in Georgia, which current President Joe Biden won by fewer than 12,000 votes.

Raffensperger ordered a manual recount before the Trump campaign requested an automated recounts, both of which confirmed Biden as the winner of Georgia’s 16 electoral votes.

In a piece for The Wall Street Journal on in December, Raffensperger wrote that Trump was using the “same playbook” as Stacey Abrams, a Democratic former legislator who lost to Brian Kemp in the 2018 Georgia governor’s race but never conceded.

Trump has vowed to work against Raffensperger’s re-election, and supports U.S. Rep. Jody Hice, who is seeking the GOP nomination for Secretary of State.

This past weekend, Abrams held a voting rights roundtable in Atlanta that included Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.

On Monday morning, Raffensperger tweeted that Klobuchar, who ran for president in 2020, “has pushed the lie that Stacey Abrams’ election was stolen to support the elections takeover. She must be held accountable.”
