East Cobb-based tutoring group to hold Red Cross blood drive

East Cobb tutoring group blood drive

Walton High School students Abhishek and Abhinav Kona reached out to pass along the word that the tutoring group they helped co-found, the American Assimilation Helpline, will be holding a blood drive over the weekend.

They and Elly Kang of the Marist School started the non-profit in 2017 to provide free, virtual, one-on-one academic assistance to students from low income, immigrant and refugee backgrounds. Since then, they estimate they’ve connected with more than 750 students with the help of more than 400 tutors (some of whom are seen in the photo above).

The AAH also has been getting involved in community efforts closer to home, including the Cobb Adopt-A-Mile Program, CPR training and blood drives.

Their next blood drive event in conjunction with the American Red Cross will take place on Sunday, Sept. 5, from 2-7 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation (1200 Indian Hills Parkway).

As for the ongoing tutoring program with AAH, Abhishek and Abhinav report that the subjects include English, Math, Science and Social Studies, as well as Computer Science.
“The unique setup of pairing the student and tutor for a focused 1hr tutoring session provides a significant opportunity for the student and tutor to freely work on individual needs and help with better understanding of the subject. Today, AAH! has students from all over the United States and countries across the globe, including South Korea, Japan, India, Brazil, and Romania.

“AAH! Founders and tutors from different backgrounds and believe in ‘Knowledge is power and knowledge shared power multiplied’ and teaching is rewarding experience. AAH looks forward to reaching out to students in need of help while providing an opportunity for those wanting to reduce educational gaps between marginalized and privileged students.”

Ga. Secretary of State to speak to Rotary Club of East Cobb

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is the guest speaker at the Wednesday breakfast meeting of the Rotary Club of East Cobb. Georgia recount presidential race, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger

The meeting is from 7-8 a.m. at the Indian Hills Country Club (4001 Clubland Drive).

There’s limited in-person attendance but the event also can be seen online. Registration is required and you can sign up by clicking here.

Raffensperger is a Republican from Johns Creek who is in his first term, and he has announced he will be seeking re-election in 2022.

He has been in the national spotlight since the presidential election last year, when former President Donald Trump’s campaign made accusations of voter fraud in Georgia, which current President Joe Biden won by fewer than 12,000 votes.

Raffensperger ordered a manual recount before the Trump campaign requested an automated recounts, both of which confirmed Biden as the winner of Georgia’s 16 electoral votes.

In a piece for The Wall Street Journal on in December, Raffensperger wrote that Trump was using the “same playbook” as Stacey Abrams, a Democratic former legislator who lost to Brian Kemp in the 2018 Georgia governor’s race but never conceded.

Trump has vowed to work against Raffensperger’s re-election, and supports U.S. Rep. Jody Hice, who is seeking the GOP nomination for Secretary of State.

This past weekend, Abrams held a voting rights roundtable in Atlanta that included Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.

On Monday morning, Raffensperger tweeted that Klobuchar, who ran for president in 2020, “has pushed the lie that Stacey Abrams’ election was stolen to support the elections takeover. She must be held accountable.”

Northeast Cobb Business Association to hold 5K-9 event

Submitted information:

The North Cobb Business Association is proud to present the 6th annual 5K-9 Race and introduce The Barking Lot street market! This great fundraiser is a pet friendly, socially distanced event which raises money to purchase a service animal for Cobb County Students and Residents. The event will take place at Piedmont Church, 570 Piedmont Church, Marietta.

The race was founded when the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office lost one of its beloved canines.  NCBA wanted to start a fundraiser to aid the purchase of a service dog for the Sheriff’s Office. Thus, the 5K-9 Race was born. Since its founding, the 5K-9 event has raised money to provide service and support dogs for the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, the Cobb County Police Department, US Military Veteran, a student with autism, and most recently, the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office.

This year, for the first time in the event’s history, TWO service dogs will be placed with residents. The first recipient is a Cobb County student who struggles with autism. The second is a young woman living in Cobb County who has suffered multiple car accidents leaving her with partial paralysis.

Join us in supporting this very worthwhile fundraising event on June 12. For Race Sponsorship, click here. For Runner Registration, click here. For Barking Lot Registration, click here.

As explained by Jim Perry, “Over 25 years ago, Jack Boone started what was called ‘The Silver Pen Award for fourth graders and all the elementary schools could participate. We gave the kids either a story or an essay question to write about. Each classroom had a winner, and the winning entries were sent to the administration. The  administration would then forward them to the Kiwanis Club of Marietta Golden K,  where a panel of judges, including educators, made the final selection for the school-wide winner.” Each Silver Pen Award winner received a bag containing: a Silver Pen, a roll of 25 one dollar golden coins, and a special engraved plaque that reads: Silver Pen Writing Award presented by The Kiwanis Club of Marietta Golden K.

This year’s Silver Pen writing winners are: Aubrey Smothers from Acworth Elementary School, Anna Raciborski from Rocky Mount Elementary School, and Adriana Fernandez from Tritt Elementary School.

Each school as well as parents are very proud of this year’s Silver  Pen Award winners,  since many exceptional entries were submitted and competition was tough!

Cobb Collaborative, a local partner of the Georgia Family Connection Partnership that provides support, training and organizational development services to Cobb County nonprofits and affiliated agencies, is pleased to announce the expansion of its Mind Your Mind mental health initiative, after receiving a $100,000 grant from Resilient Georgia. The initiative helps to raise awareness, promote resiliency and reduce stigma around mental health issues, particularly in light of the burdens created by COVID-19 as it continues to impact children and families.

“We are honored to be awarded this grant to support the vital trauma-informed training, resources and programming to expand our Mind Your Mind initiative that launched in late 2019,” said Irene Barton, Cobb Collaborative Executive Director. “Mental illness affects 1 in 5 Americans, and yet so many individuals are hesitant to get help or are unaware of available resources. Now more than ever, it is critical to connect our community with knowledge and resources to help improve positive outcomes for Cobb county children and families,” she continued.

The two-year Trauma-Informed Community Grant from Resilient Georgia will fund resources that have a regional emphasis on trauma-informed awareness, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and child sexual abuse prevention training as a basis to transform systems and procedures crossing both public and private sectors.

Since its inception in 2019, the Mind Your Mind mental health initiative has continued to receive support from agencies like CareSource Foundation, Cobb & Douglas Public Health and Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning. The partnership with Resilient Georgia will help ensure that mental health resources are continuing to be provided in Cobb County.

On your mark, get set, go!  While that’s usually how a real road race starts, this annual fundraiser hosted by the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary on May 15 will once again be a Kettle Krush 5K “Race in Place” with no running or walking even required.

Brad Nitz, an East Cobb resident and meteorologist with WSB-TV, will serve as emcee for this Facebook Live broadcast beginning at 9 a.m. on May 15.

“While The Salvation Army of metro Atlanta has been here to support our community for 131 years, that need has never been greater during the COVID-19 pandemic and still today,” said Dawn Menear, event co-chair with Cindy Theiler, both East Cobb residents. “Our auxiliary knows requests for food and financial emergency assistance from The Salvation Army continue to remain higher than pre-pandemic. That’s why SAWA’s support for this event is critical.”

The purpose of the event is to help “krush” poverty, homelessness, and sex trafficking, and support veterans and youth enrichment.

“With a Race in Place, all participants are eligible to win the race awards and special, donated giveaway prizes,” said Theiler, who is one of 30+ East Cobb auxiliary members. “We’re pleased to have Mt. Bethel UMC as our title sponsor again and hope East Cobb residents will join us for this creative fundraiser.”

To sign up for this event and be eligible for awards and prizes, go to https://www.active.com/running/virtual-events-kettle-krush-5k-2021. A drawing will be held for top overall and top masters males and females as well as individual awards in 16 age brackets from 10 and under to 80 and over. All participants will be entered into a drawing for special, donated giveaway prizes.

This year the team competition is expanded to include three categories for prizes- business, church, and individual. Special prizes will be given to the top teams with the most participants (a minimum of 10 participants are needed to be eligible). All participants will receive a special commemorative Kettle Krush 5K “Race in Place” short-sleeve T-shirt.

Entry fee is $30 if received by May 5 at 5 p.m. and $35 through May 11 at 5 p.m. Donations are always welcome. Please make your check payable to The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, and write Kettle Krush on the bottom “for” line of your check and mail to PRRC, P.O. Box 81777, Atlanta, GA 30366.
