Closings at The Avenue East Cobb: BB & B; K Squared Boutique

The Avenue East Cobb Bed Bath Beyond closing

Some changes afoot at The Avenue East Cobb include the closing of the Bed, Bath and Beyond store and the K Squared Artisan Boutique.

The BB & B closing is part of a multi-store paring down by the national household wares chain, including a store near Perimeter Mall.

The Avenue East Cobb store will be open until the end of February, and there’s a 20 percent off sale for everything in stock, plus other sales.

K Squared Artisan Boutique, which sells, jewelry and handcrafted gifts made by local artists, announced Wednesday that it’s closing this month.

“It’s the end of a dream, but the beginning of new ones. We had a great run, but we have decided to close K Squared this month,” read a social media announcement.K Squared The Avenue East Cobb

K Squared, which was started by Katy Colvin and Kesha Darji, former jewelry business owners, is holding a store closing sale next week (Jan. 10-16) with 50 percent discounts, and all displays will be on sale.

“Can’t thank all the great artists and customers who supported us through this journey!,” they said Wednesday. “We met so many incredible people and are proud of what we created. Please keep in touch and stop by K Squared one last time!”

Another store has opened nearby at The Avenue, in the former Olea Oliva space, and that we’ll be featuring soon in a separate post.

It’s called Vanilla Cafe e Gelato, and it’s in Suite 1010 (near the East Cobb mural). We’re talking to the owners and will be featuring them soon.

Sprayberry Crossing barber shop relocating to Town Center area

Sprayberry Crossing barber shop relocating

As we noted in our year-end 2021 roundup, the demolition of the Sprayberry Crossing Shopping Center slated for redevelopment is tentatively scheduled for the first quarter of 2022.

That means that businesses located there now have been asked to vacate.

Among them is Ricardos Martin, who opened the Cut-N-Sports Music and Barber Shop at Sprayberry Crossing in 2005.

His last day of business there was on Friday, Dec. 31, but he’s not going out of business.

Instead, Martin is moving his barber shop to the Town Center area (425 Ernest W Barrett Parkway NW, Loft 18, Kennesaw), and it will reopen this Friday, Jan. 7.

Cuts-N-Sports has been his first stab at being a small business owner.

“Serving the East Cobb community for 16-1/2 years has been a great experience,” Martin Martin said “I am so thankful for this community and am going to miss my neighbors and the uniqueness of the area and space.”

Top East Cobb stories 2021: Changes at The Avenue East Cobb

One of East Cobb’s premier shopping destinations underwent new management in 2021, with most of the major changes set to take place in the new year.

Poag Shopping Centers announced in July a joint venture partnership with North American Properties of Atlanta, which was the developer of Avalon in Alpharetta and has overhauled Colony Square and Atlantic Station in Midtown.

The major changes include creating a “downtown atmosphere” The Avenue East Cobb featuring upscale “chef-driven” dining, a central lawn, more events and a concierge service.

NAP has ramped up the event schedule with regular movie screenings, a Fall Fest and more holiday festivities.

NAP’s objective in managing day-to-day operations of the 230,000-square-foot retail center is “to create a socially magnetic place that pulls people together to hang out and connect with community.”

The Avenue East Cobb opened in 1999 on the site of a former driving range on Roswell Road.

Last year Chain Store Age named The Avenue East Cobb one of its “Top 10 Comeback Centers” after weathering closures due to COVID-19.

East Cobb GreenWise store closing at Sandy Plains MarketPlace

GreenWise Market Sandy Plains MarketPlace

After opening its first GreenWise organic supermarket in Georgia to much fanfare last June, Publix is closing that location—at the Sandy Plains MarketPlace—this weekend.

The last day of business will be Saturday for the East Cobb GreenWise store (3460 Sandy Plains Road).

A reader who went to the store Monday said he hadn’t seen an official notice until then, following a report last month in Tomorrow’s News Today, an Atlanta retail, restaurant and hospitality news site.

East Cobb News sent a message to GreenWise, which provided the following response:

“It has been GreenWise Market’s privilege to serve the Marietta community.

“As you can imagine, closing one of our stores is never an easy decision to make, and there are a number of factors considered when making that decision.

“Please know, all associates at this location will be offered to relocate to nearby Publix stores if they so desire. We sincerely apologize for any disappointment this may cause, but we thank you for welcoming us into your community.”

East Cobb News also has contacted Orkin and Associates, the shopping center owner, for comment.

The GreenWise store, with more than 25,000 square feet of space in a standalone building, has been the anchor for Sandy Plains Marketplace, which opened in late 2019 on the site of the former campus of Mountain View Elementary School.

The store’s opening, first announced in 2018, was delayed due to COVID-19.

This is the third GreenWise store to close recently, following decisions to shutter two locations in South Carolina in August.

There are nine GreenWise stores still operating—eight in Florida, the home base for Publix, and another near Birmingham, Ala.

Publix recently opened its seventh supermarket in East Cobb in the East Cobb Crossing Shopping Center, next to Dick’s Sporting Goods on Roswell Road at Johnson Ferry Road.

The first Publix store in Georgia opened just across the street from GreenWise at Highland Plaza Shopping Center, at Sandy Plains and Shallowford roads.

The East Cobb Area Council of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce has named former Cobb Commissioner Bob Ott its 2021 Citizen of the Year.

Ott was honored at a breakfast Thursday at Indian Hills Country Club for his public service, including 12 years on the Cobb Board of Commissioners and citizen activism beginning with the East Cobb Civic Association on zoning and planning matters.

Ott, a Republican who lives in the Powers Ferry-Terrell Mill area, served three terms representing District 2, which stretches from Vinings, Cumberland and Smyrna to much of East Cobb, until retiring in 2020.

(See previous ECN story here as Ott prepared to leave public office.)

The Chamber also noted his role in helping bring the Atlanta Braves to Cobb County, promoting other development in the Cumberland area and helping secure land for the expansion of East Cobb Park (previous ECN story here).

During the COVID-19 crisis, “Ott was vigilant in helping small businesses stay open, working alongside SelectCobb to propose that $50 million of the county’s federal CARES Act funding would be dedicated to developing grants for small business owners,” the Chamber said in a release.

“His term started with catastrophic floods that devastated East and South Cobb County and ended with a pandemic that crippled the nation. Ott worked tirelessly through those terrible events during his term and has remained a faithful servant to his community.”

Ted's Montana Grill, East Cobb food scores

The Atlanta-based Ted’s Montana Grill restaurant chain, whose 39 locations include Parkaire Landing in East Cobb, announced that it will be giving its employees a day off for Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve for the first time this year.

From a release:

The restaurant wants its valued team members to enjoy well-deserved time to relax and unwind with family and friends.

The two holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, are among Ted’s biggest sales days of the year. Ted’s will remain closed Christmas Day, as it has since it opened in 2002.

George McKerrow, CEO and co-founder of Ted’s Montana Grill, recognizes the challenging times in the restaurant industry and appreciates his team. He encourages all restaurants to close on the holidays so employees can enjoy time with loved ones.

“Workers in the restaurant/hospitality industry have been the most impacted during these challenging times. We are incredibly grateful for our team members who came back to work with a positive, spirited attitude and the genuine hospitality that our guests expect. Our team has helped us thrive by making our guests smile and more importantly, feel like family. Now they deserve to spend quality time with their own families this holiday season.

I’d also like to encourage everyone in the restaurant industry to close and take a break on the holidays. We should look past the revenue success and realize what truly matters now more than ever – making special holiday memories with the people we love the most.”

Sewell Mill Library to serve as disaster loan outreach center

Sewell Mill Library disaster loan outreach center

From Thomas Brooks at the Cobb County Public Library comes this notice that starting Saturday and continuing weekdays through Oct. 28, businesses affected by recent flooding can consult with U.S. Small Business Association representatives for disaster loan consultations at the Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center (2051 Lower Roswell Road).

The temporary outreach center there will be open from 10-2 Saturday, then from 10-6 Monday-Friday for the next two weeks, ending on Oct. 28.

Here’s what Cobb County government sent out Thursday about how the program will work:

The US Small Business Administration issued a Disaster Declaration for Cobb County today that will provide assistance to those impacted by flooding caused by heavy rains last month.  Parts of the county were hit by more than five inches of rain in a short period of time, causing flood damage to homes, businesses, and apartments in areas that have rarely been impacted by flooding.

The declaration comes after federal, state, and local disaster teams toured the area last month. More than 250 reports of building damage were submitted to Cobb Emergency Management teams in the days following the early September deluge.

“Many who reported flood damage had never experienced such a disaster before,” said Cobb Emergency Management Director Cassie Mazloom. “After our survey teams found the impacted area was much larger than expected, we ramped up an online reporting tool that allowed residents to report building damage. We hope this declaration will allow many of these victims to get assistance to complete repairs.”

The declaration means those affected can apply for physical damage SBA loans as well as the Economic Injury Disaster Loans for small businesses. SBA officials will open a Disaster Loan Outreach Center starting this Saturday at the Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center at 2051 Lower Roswell Road, Marietta. Representatives will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, then from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The center will be open through October 28.

Cobb Police officers awarded Medal of Valor by Cobb Chamber

Cobb Police Officers Medal Valor Cobb Chamber
Photo: Karl L. Moore/Mooreshots LLC, Courtesy of Cobb Chamber of Commerce

The Cobb Chamber of Commerce on Monday honored public safety personnel at its annual Public Safety Appreciation luncheon.

Among those honored were Cobb Police officers David Cavender, John Pearson and Bryan Moore, who responded to a carjacking in the Powers Ferry Road area in June 2020 that led to the shooting death of the suspect (previous ECN story here).

One of the officers was shot by the suspect, and for their work, they received the Chamber’s Medal of Valor, “the highest award recognizing an individual for an act of bravery in a life-threatening situation. The award is only presented when a deserving candidate is found.”

Here are more details about that incident:

On June 25, 2020, Cobb County Police officers responded to the area of Powers Ferry Road and Delk Road regarding a carjacking that had just occurred in a grocery parking lot. The victim reported that a male had brandished a knife and stole his Tesla vehicle. The suspect had arrived at the shopping center in a truck that he had earlier carjacked before fleeing in the Tesla. Cobb Police officers were able to locate the suspect and pursued him for several miles until the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. He fired several rounds from a rifle at the pursuing officers, who took cover and lost sight of the suspect. Cobb Police SWAT Team officers David Cavender and John Pearson responded to nearby townhomes where residents had called 911 after observing the suspect entering their complex.

Officer Bryan Moore, of the Cobb Police K-9 Unit, responded to the townhomes and spoke with a resident who said that he had seen the suspect run behind a trash dumpster at the end of a parking lot. As Officer Cavender and Officer Pearson approached the dumpster on opposing sides. Moments later the suspect fired on Officer Cavender without warning. Officer Cavender was struck in the right temple by shrapnel from the one of the suspect’s rounds that had hit the holographic sight on his rifle. As Cavender turned his head to the right, he was struck on the back of his head by another rifle round. Fortunately, the round only grazed his scalp, and he was able to return fire and move to cover behind a vehicle. As that was occurring, Officer Pearson quickly located the suspect and stopped the threat. Once additional officers arrived, Officer Pearson escorted Officer Cavender to the front of the townhomes complex to meet with medical personnel. A short time later, supervisors created a tactical plan to approach the suspect and found him deceased.

Officers Cavender, Pearson and Moore are veteran members of the Cobb Police SWAT Team and K9 Unit. As they were searching for the suspect in the residential area that had dozens of potential danger areas and hiding spots, the three officers utilized their tactical training to analyze the situation and make an effective plan to solve the crisis.  Had they not changed their approach route to the suspect’s location, the incident could have had fatal consequences for Officers Cavender, Pearson and Moore, as well as many other officers and dozens of civilians who were enjoying the summer evening.

The 2021 Public Safety Appreciation Breakfast was made possible with the support of our event sponsors, including Platinum Sponsors, Cobb EMC and Wellstar Health System; Awards Sponsor, LoRusso Law Firm; Gold Sponsors, Genuine Parts Company and Walton Communities; Silver Sponsors, Barrow Wrecker Services, C.W. East Cobb News has been working hard over these last 18 months or so to bring you all the latest COVID-19 news and everything else that’s been going on in very challenging times, and we’re eager to reconnect with fellow ECBA members, business owners and community members.

We’re increasingly becoming the go-to source for news, information and online community connection in East Cobb. That’s what we hear from readers, and that’s our pledge as we forge ahead in the wake of COVID-19.

While other media outlets are cutting back, East Cobb News is growing and adapting not only to how residents get their news, but how local businesses are having to tailor what they do.

We’ve updated our Media Kit (that you can download here) that’s designed to fit the promotional needs and budget of any kind of business, and we’re flexible to help you develop your marketing plan in these uncertain times.

We also want to work with civic and community organizations as they get back to having events, especially as the holidays approach, and we offer special advertising plans for those purposes as well.

If you’re coming to the Expo, please stop by our table to say hello! We’d love to meet you!
