Gas prices in Cobb, Georgia jump by an average of 13 cents

Cobb gas prices

Gasoline prices in Cobb County and across Georgia rose by an average of 13 cents a gallon in the last week, according to AAA-The Auto Club Group, and are likely to increase more due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Regular unleaded gas prices that were commonly around $3.29 a gallon in the East Cobb area last week are now at or around $3.45 a gallon. In Cobb County overall, the AAA-calculated average is $3.48 a gallon.

The Georgia average is $3.50 a gallon, costing motorists $52.50 to fill a 15-gallon tank of gasoline.

The national average is even higher, at $3.60 a gallon. Current prices are about a dollar more than they were this time a year ago, and are closing in on record prices that exceeded $4 a gallon at the start of the economic recession in 2008.

Last week national crude prices neared $100 a barrel after a sharp 71-cents-a-gallon rise as Russian military troops invaded the Ukraine.

“As the conflict escalates with more sanctions and retaliatory actions, the oil markets will likely respond by continuing to increase the price of crude oil to reflect more risk of disruption to tight global oil supplies,” AAA-The Auto Club Group concluded.

Some tips from AAA-The Auto Club Group on saving money on gas:

  • Slow down — if you’re on the highway, know that gas use increases as your car passes 50 mph. If you drive the speed limit, you could reduce your car’s fuel consumption.
  • Drive more gently — gradually brake and accelerate, rather than stomping on the gas pedal or brake pedal.
  • Avoid engine idling — it can waste fuel.
  • Make one trip, instead of many — make a comprehensive list of items you need to buy and then make a single trip outside of your home, rather than multiple short trips.
  • Clean out the car — lighter cars use less fuel. Get the junk out of your trunk, cargo areas and passenger compartments.
  • Stay regular on vehicle maintenance — get your car checked out regularly and make sure your tires are filled to the correct pressure level.

You can check more gas prices by clicking here.

Family-run Vanilla Café e Gelato opens at The Avenue East Cobb

After running a bakery in their native Brazil for more than 20 years, Ubiracy and Raul Goncalves wanted to open something similar, but on a different scale, when they emigrated to the United States six years ago.Vanilla Cafe e Gelato opens Avenue East Cobb

In São Paulo, they had a staff that extended beyond their immediate family. When they moved to the metro Atlanta area and settled on an East Cobb location last year, they went looking for a physical space ideal for the new concept:

A European-style coffee house with homemade baked goods, aimed at luring pedestrian traffic.

“We didn’t want to necessarily have a Brazilian bakery,” said their daughter, Clara Goncalves, who along with her sister Ester helps out at the Vanilla Café e Gelato, which opened last week at The Avenue East Cobb.

It’s located in Suite 1010 (in the original Olea Oliva space), near the East Cobb mural. Indoors are five tables—room for 10-12 people, and two more outdoor tables near the entrance.

As she did in Brazil, Ubiracy makes all the baked goods—cakes, brownies, pastries, cookies and more—some of them from traditional Brazilian recipes. Ester Goncalves, her other daughter, took a course in gelato-making in Brazil and oversees that part of the operation.

The coffee comes from Bellwood, an Atlanta-based roaster, and there’s also a premium on locally-sourced food ingredients.

The aim, Clara says, is to entice customers to linger after shopping or a meal nearby.

“This area calls for a different kind of a coffee shop,” she says.

There aren’t many indie coffee shops in the East Cobb area—Mzizi Coffee Roasters, on Johnson Ferry Road near Shallowford Road—is an exception.

Vanilla Café opens as The Avenue East Cobb will soon be overhauled with more restaurants and events.

It’s part of a reimagined “socially magnetic” and “modern gathering place” undertaken by North American Properties, which is managing the retail center after developing Avalon in Alpharetta and renovating Colony Square and Atlantic Station in Atlanta.

Vanilla Café is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday and from 12-6 p.m. on Sunday.

The deadline to sign up is Monday, Jan. 10, for the 20-day program, which includes training, credentialing and job placement. The training is free to eligible applicants.

Classes will take place Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., starting of Feb. 21 and ending March 18.

CEFGA received $3.3. million to expand Construction Ready, and the GEER funding also supports broadband and connectivity extensions, mental health services, workforce training, childcare, and tech innovation.

Closings at The Avenue East Cobb: BB & B; K Squared Boutique

The Avenue East Cobb Bed Bath Beyond closing

Some changes afoot at The Avenue East Cobb include the closing of the Bed, Bath and Beyond store and the K Squared Artisan Boutique.

The BB & B closing is part of a multi-store paring down by the national household wares chain, including a store near Perimeter Mall.

The Avenue East Cobb store will be open until the end of February, and there’s a 20 percent off sale for everything in stock, plus other sales.

K Squared Artisan Boutique, which sells, jewelry and handcrafted gifts made by local artists, announced Wednesday that it’s closing this month.

“It’s the end of a dream, but the beginning of new ones. We had a great run, but we have decided to close K Squared this month,” read a social media announcement.K Squared The Avenue East Cobb

K Squared, which was started by Katy Colvin and Kesha Darji, former jewelry business owners, is holding a store closing sale next week (Jan. 10-16) with 50 percent discounts, and all displays will be on sale.

“Can’t thank all the great artists and customers who supported us through this journey!,” they said Wednesday. “We met so many incredible people and are proud of what we created. Please keep in touch and stop by K Squared one last time!”

Another store has opened nearby at The Avenue, in the former Olea Oliva space, and that we’ll be featuring soon in a separate post.

It’s called Vanilla Cafe e Gelato, and it’s in Suite 1010 (near the East Cobb mural). We’re talking to the owners and will be featuring them soon.

Sprayberry Crossing barber shop relocating to Town Center area

Sprayberry Crossing barber shop relocating

As we noted in our year-end 2021 roundup, the demolition of the Sprayberry Crossing Shopping Center slated for redevelopment is tentatively scheduled for the first quarter of 2022.

That means that businesses located there now have been asked to vacate.

Among them is Ricardos Martin, who opened the Cut-N-Sports Music and Barber Shop at Sprayberry Crossing in 2005.

His last day of business there was on Friday, Dec. 31, but he’s not going out of business.

Instead, Martin is moving his barber shop to the Town Center area (425 Ernest W Barrett Parkway NW, Loft 18, Kennesaw), and it will reopen this Friday, Jan. 7.

Cuts-N-Sports has been his first stab at being a small business owner.

“Serving the East Cobb community for 16-1/2 years has been a great experience,” Martin Martin said “I am so thankful for this community and am going to miss my neighbors and the uniqueness of the area and space.”

Top East Cobb stories 2021: Changes at The Avenue East Cobb

One of East Cobb’s premier shopping destinations underwent new management in 2021, with most of the major changes set to take place in the new year.

Poag Shopping Centers announced in July a joint venture partnership with North American Properties of Atlanta, which was the developer of Avalon in Alpharetta and has overhauled Colony Square and Atlantic Station in Midtown.

The major changes include creating a “downtown atmosphere” The Avenue East Cobb featuring upscale “chef-driven” dining, a central lawn, more events and a concierge service.

NAP has ramped up the event schedule with regular movie screenings, a Fall Fest and more holiday festivities.

NAP’s objective in managing day-to-day operations of the 230,000-square-foot retail center is “to create a socially magnetic place that pulls people together to hang out and connect with community.”

The Avenue East Cobb opened in 1999 on the site of a former driving range on Roswell Road.

Last year Chain Store Age named The Avenue East Cobb one of its “Top 10 Comeback Centers” after weathering closures due to COVID-19.

East Cobb GreenWise store closing at Sandy Plains MarketPlace

GreenWise Market Sandy Plains MarketPlace

After opening its first GreenWise organic supermarket in Georgia to much fanfare last June, Publix is closing that location—at the Sandy Plains MarketPlace—this weekend.

The last day of business will be Saturday for the East Cobb GreenWise store (3460 Sandy Plains Road).

A reader who went to the store Monday said he hadn’t seen an official notice until then, following a report last month in Tomorrow’s News Today, an Atlanta retail, restaurant and hospitality news site.

East Cobb News sent a message to GreenWise, which provided the following response:

“It has been GreenWise Market’s privilege to serve the Marietta community.

“As you can imagine, closing one of our stores is never an easy decision to make, and there are a number of factors considered when making that decision.

“Please know, all associates at this location will be offered to relocate to nearby Publix stores if they so desire. We sincerely apologize for any disappointment this may cause, but we thank you for welcoming us into your community.”

East Cobb News also has contacted Orkin and Associates, the shopping center owner, for comment.

The GreenWise store, with more than 25,000 square feet of space in a standalone building, has been the anchor for Sandy Plains Marketplace, which opened in late 2019 on the site of the former campus of Mountain View Elementary School.

The store’s opening, first announced in 2018, was delayed due to COVID-19.

This is the third GreenWise store to close recently, following decisions to shutter two locations in South Carolina in August.

There are nine GreenWise stores still operating—eight in Florida, the home base for Publix, and another near Birmingham, Ala.

Publix recently opened its seventh supermarket in East Cobb in the East Cobb Crossing Shopping Center, next to Dick’s Sporting Goods on Roswell Road at Johnson Ferry Road.

The first Publix store in Georgia opened just across the street from GreenWise at Highland Plaza Shopping Center, at Sandy Plains and Shallowford roads.

The East Cobb Area Council of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce has named former Cobb Commissioner Bob Ott its 2021 Citizen of the Year.

Ott was honored at a breakfast Thursday at Indian Hills Country Club for his public service, including 12 years on the Cobb Board of Commissioners and citizen activism beginning with the East Cobb Civic Association on zoning and planning matters.

Ott, a Republican who lives in the Powers Ferry-Terrell Mill area, served three terms representing District 2, which stretches from Vinings, Cumberland and Smyrna to much of East Cobb, until retiring in 2020.

(See previous ECN story here as Ott prepared to leave public office.)

The Chamber also noted his role in helping bring the Atlanta Braves to Cobb County, promoting other development in the Cumberland area and helping secure land for the expansion of East Cobb Park (previous ECN story here).

During the COVID-19 crisis, “Ott was vigilant in helping small businesses stay open, working alongside SelectCobb to propose that $50 million of the county’s federal CARES Act funding would be dedicated to developing grants for small business owners,” the Chamber said in a release.

“His term started with catastrophic floods that devastated East and South Cobb County and ended with a pandemic that crippled the nation. Ott worked tirelessly through those terrible events during his term and has remained a faithful servant to his community.”

Ted’s Montana Grill closing for Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve

Ted's Montana Grill, East Cobb food scores

The Atlanta-based Ted’s Montana Grill restaurant chain, whose 39 locations include Parkaire Landing in East Cobb, announced that it will be giving its employees a day off for Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve for the first time this year.

From a release:

The restaurant wants its valued team members to enjoy well-deserved time to relax and unwind with family and friends.

The two holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, are among Ted’s biggest sales days of the year. Ted’s will remain closed Christmas Day, as it has since it opened in 2002.

George McKerrow, CEO and co-founder of Ted’s Montana Grill, recognizes the challenging times in the restaurant industry and appreciates his team. He encourages all restaurants to close on the holidays so employees can enjoy time with loved ones.

“Workers in the restaurant/hospitality industry have been the most impacted during these challenging times. We are incredibly grateful for our team members who came back to work with a positive, spirited attitude and the genuine hospitality that our guests expect. Our team has helped us thrive by making our guests smile and more importantly, feel like family. Now they deserve to spend quality time with their own families this holiday season.

I’d also like to encourage everyone in the restaurant industry to close and take a break on the holidays. We should look past the revenue success and realize what truly matters now more than ever – making special holiday memories with the people we love the most.”
