East Cobb Library continues book discussion, cookbook groups

Cobb libraries Thanksgiving week events

Several book discussion and other groups are fully resuming their meetings at the East Cobb Library.

The East Cobb Book Discussion groups meet the third Thursday of every month, at 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m., after participants read a pre-selected book—fiction, non-fiction, classics and new releases.

On Thursday, Dec. 16, the morning group discussion will be about “The Vanishing Half,” a historical  novel by Brit Bennett. The afternoon group discussion will cover “Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family” by Robert Kolker.

In addition to those groups, East Cobb Library also offers “book tasting” meetings for adults every other month, in which participants sample five books, then discuss their favorites.

The next meeting is Dec. 28 at 5:30 p.m., and the books are under the “Cozy Mysteries to Die” theme. Registration is required at cobbcat.org.

There’s also an East Cobb Cookbook Club that meets the second Tuesday of the month, in which members review a variety of cookbooks to explore techniques, chefs, cooking styles, dishes and more.

Members choose a themed recipe each month and prepare a dish to share. The next meeting is Jan. 11 at 4 p.m., and the session is entitled “Soups and Salads.” Registration is required at cobbcat.org.

88th North Georgia State Fair continues through Oct. 3

North Georgia State Fair
The Georgia Mountain Ride at the North Georgia State Fair.

After being cancelled in 2020 for the first time since World War II, the North Georgia State Fair has returned to Jim Miller Park in Cobb County, and will continue through Oct. 3.

The 88th annual event is sponsored by Superior Plumbing, and the schedule is

Monday through Thursday 4pm-11pm, Fridays 4pm to midnight, Saturdays 10am to midnight, and Sundays 12:30pm-10pm.

The fair typically attracts more than 300,000 people, and heavy turnout is expected again this year, due in part to the COVID-related cancellation a year ago, and superb weather in the forecast for the next week.

Gate admission is $10, children 10 and under are free. Ride tickets are $1.25 each, $20.00 for 21 tickets, $50.00 for 55 tickets and $100 for 120 tickets. All rides require more than one ticket. Parking is $5. ATM machines are located on the midway. Online advance discount tickets can be purchased for $7, children 10 and under free.

Here’s a thumbnail overview of what’s at the fair this year, including some new events and features, including concerts and further ticket information.

There are some health protocols that have been put into place. Visitors will not be required to wear masks in the outdoor areas of Jim Miller Park, but since it is a Cobb County facility, masks will be required while indoors.

That’s because of a Cobb County Government order mandating indoor mask use at county facilities.

There will be hand-sanitizing stations located throughout the fairgrounds and social-distancing will be implemented where necessary.

From Oct. 1-3 those signing up for an onsite vaccination appointment will gain free admission and unlimited rides. The Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be available at the Jim Miller Park Events Center.

Advance sign-up is required; for English, go to cobbvax.coreresponse.org and for Spanish, go to cobbvaxesp.coreresponse.org.

All those who receive the vaccine at the fair will be entered into a drawing for a $500 Visa gift card courtesy of Superior Plumbing.

The fair website can be found here; Jim Miller Park (2245 Callaway Road, SW, Marietta).

Georgia Symphony Orchestra begins new season Sept. 25

Submitted information:Maria Valdes, Georgia Symphony Orchestra

Georgia Symphony Music Director and Conductor Timothy Verville leads the orchestra as it opens its 71st concert season on Sept. 25, 2021, with Mahler, smahler, a reduced orchestration of Gustav Mahler’s Fourth Symphony.

Acclaimed soprano and Marietta native Maria Valdes will be the featured soloist at the performance, which will be held at the Marietta Performing Arts Center.

This special chamber version of the Fourth Symphony was arranged by Yoon Jae Lee, founder and artistic director of Ensemble 212, located in New York City, and curator of the Mahler Chamber Project.

“Mahler’s Fourth Symphony often is referred to as the most ‘chamber-like,’ due to the exquisite intricacies and interplay between instrumental sections,” said Verville. “The GSO’s chamber version of this work contains all the sublime melodies and progressive harmonies that have led to Mahler’s popularity as a composer.”

Mahler, smahler is the first of three performances in the GSO’s Classics Series. The GSO’s 2021-2022 season performance schedule also includes its Holiday Pops, Sensory Friendly, GSO Chorus and GSO Jazz! concerts.

To ensure the health, safety and comfort of its patrons, musicians and staff, the GSO is offering socially distanced matinee and evening shows of this performance at reduced seating capacity. The GSO also will require all patrons to be fully vaccinated, show proof upon entry and be masked for the duration of the concert. Season subscriptions and individual tickets can be purchased online at georgiasymphony.org/events.

The Avenue East Cobb begins fall ‘Comedy Live’ series

The Avenue East Cobb summer events

The Avenue East Cobb announced in July it was partnering with a new management company, North American Properties, which developed Avalon in Alpharetta and whose overhaul projects include Colony Square and Atlantic Station in Atlanta.

Among the priorities for revamping the East Cobb center—along with a bevy of new “chef-driven restaurants”—was to substantially add to live events.

Starting Monday, a free “Comedy Live” series will begin between Kale Me Crazy & Banana Republic, weather permitting (the forecast is gorgeous, sunny and in the 80s).

It’s part of a First Monday schedule (this month, the second Monday due to Labor Day) that continues on Oct. 4 and Nov. 1.

The show is from 7-8 p.m and is recommended for ages 13 and older. You can bring your own tailgate chairs or other seating.

The entertainers are from the Punchline Comedy Club, and this event, like many others at The Avenue, is aimed at getting customers to shop and grab a bite from local restaurants before the show.

More about events at The Avenue East Cobb can be found here.

2021 Atlanta Jewish Film Festival includes in-theater screenings

2021 Atlanta Jewish Film Festival

Submitted information:

The Atlanta Jewish Film Festival (AJFF) is excited to announce its return to the movie theater for the first time in 18 months with AJFF North, a mini-festival on Aug. 28-29, 2021, that will combine in-theater and virtual screenings. Made possible by the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta through its “Making Jewish Places” initiative, AJFF North brings the best in Jewish cinema directly to residents of Alpharetta, East Cobb, Johns Creek, Roswell and surrounding North Metro communities, though is open to all audiences.

Moviegoers can enjoy a diverse mix of dramas, documentary, family-friendly fare, a Hollywood classic comedy, and even short films in a series of screenings at the Aurora Cineplex in Roswell (5100 Commerce Pkwy, Roswell, GA 30076), as well as via streaming in the AJFF Virtual Cinema. Tickets are available for purchase on Aug. 4 and are $16/person for in-person screenings and $16/household for films presented in the Virtual Cinema.

In-person screenings at the Aurora Cineplex represent the festival’s first return to movie theaters since February 2020 and provides an opportunity for audiences to rediscover the joy of seeing films back on the big screen, as AJFF plans for a larger theatrical experience at next year’s 22nd edition of the annual festival in February 2022.

“We’re thrilled to be the official venue for AJFF North,” says Barbara Scoggins, operations manager of the Aurora Cineplex. “As the world starts going back to the movies, community events like this one provide us an opportunity to serve film lovers in the North Atlanta metro area and beyond.”

As AJFF continues to prioritize the safety of audiences and staff, organizers will follow COVID protocols in accordance with CDC and local guidelines, as well as theater partners. This will include measures to encourage all audiences to wear masks inside the theater venue, as well as social distancing during entry and exit from the theater.

“After nearly two years of planning with our partners at Jewish Federation and community volunteers, AJFF North is a milestone initiative that both welcomes audiences back to theaters while also serving fans in North Metro neighborhoods,” says AJFF Executive Director Kenny Blank. “AJFF has always taken care to listen to the needs of the community, and this mini-festival further provides an opportunity to understand how the moviegoing experience will evolve as we plan for next year’s annual festival and beyond.”

Georgia Symphony Orchestra to return for 2021-22 season

Georgia Symphony Orchestra
Music Director and Conductor Timothy Verville leads the Georgia Symphony Orchestra’s return to live performances.

Submitted information and photo:

The Georgia Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to announce its 71st concert season with a return to the stage beginning late September 2021.

The GSO’s Classics series, led by Music Director and Conductor Timothy Verville, features three artistically captivating and musically challenging classical performances at either the Marietta Performing Arts Center or the Bailey Center for the Performing Arts at Kennesaw State University. In an effort to continue its focus on diversity and inclusivity in classical music, the series features the works of two American women composers and two women soloists.

On Sept. 25, 2021, the orchestra will kick off the season with Mahler, smahler, a reduced orchestration of Gustav Mahler’s Fourth Symphony. This work often is referred to as Mahler’s most “chamber-like,” due to the intricacies and interplay between instrumental sections. Soprano and Marietta native Maria Valdes, who has received acclaim on the stage from San Francisco to Chicago and New York, is the featured soloist.

The GSO’s performance of Beethoven at the Beach, scheduled for Feb 26, 2022, features Amy Beach’s Symphony No. 2, the first symphony written and published by an American woman composer, and Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major. The award-winning violinist, Minami Yoshida, joins the GSO for her American debut. Yoshida was a major prize winner at the Montreal and Sibelius competitions and has performed with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and others.

The Classics series concludes on May 21, 2022, with a concert entitled The Firebird and Music of Remembrance. The performance includes American composer Jennifer Higdon’s Blue Cathedral, one of her most performed works, and Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite (1919), which is a collection of music from the ballet of the same name. This concert also will feature the GSO’s phenomenal 90-voice GSO Chorus.

In addition to the Classics series, the GSO’s season also includes its Holiday Pops, Sensory Friendly and GSO Jazz! concerts.

Two shows of the GSO’s beloved Holiday Pops concert will be held at the Marietta Performing Arts Center on Dec. 4, 2021. In addition to a traditional sing-along and great holiday favorites, the concert also will feature the winner of its Virtual to Center Stage competition, opera vocalist Lainie Ewers.  And a special guest each year is a man in a distinctive red suit— a favorite for all ages whom you are sure to recognize.

GSO Jazz!, led by Music Director Sam Skelton, once again welcomes fans of this uniquely American music genre to the historic Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre on Feb. 12 and April 2, 2022, to enjoy jazz small ensemble and classic Big Band repertoire.

And once again, the GSO will hold its annual Sensory Friendly performance on March 12, 2022, at the Marietta Performing Arts Center. Funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and designed specifically for individuals with sensory sensitivities and their families, the concert features a range of enjoyable musical selections. Audience members are free to be themselves; change seats, move about the auditorium, sing, vocalize, even yell out “BRAVO!” after their newly discovered classical favorites.

To ensure the health and safety of its patrons, musicians and staff, the GSO will follow all recommended CDC COVID-19 protocols at its partner venues.

GSO season subscription renewals will begin on July 21, 2021, followed by general admission season subscriptions Aug. 1 and individual concert ticket sales on Aug. 16.

For more information on season subscription packages or individual concert tickets, visit georgiasymphony.org/all-events.

East Cobb author’s latest detective mystery novel publishes

Submitted information:Lance Lo Russo

“Hijacking Justice,” the latest in Lance J. LoRusso’s Blue Mystery series featuring Detective Johnny Till is being released on Friday, June 3, 2021, to subscribers of the Lance LoRusso Books Newsletter. Each week, a new chapter of this police thriller will be released. With a plot similar to today’s headlines, LoRusso draws upon his extensive experience representing over 100 law enforcement officers involved in shootings, in this serial novel portraying a fictionalized world where the fair treatment of our front-line heroes is often sacrificed to feed power hungry politicians and a criminal machine. In this eight-episode story, Detective Johnny Till finds himself thrown in jail and charged with triple murder after being ambushed while visiting Ingram County on the Georgia Coast to help put away a serial rapist. Fans and readers of police mysteries can go to lancelorussobooks.com to sign up for the LoRusso Books Newsletter and read the thrilling chapters of Hijacking Justice as they are released weekly. Regardless of when a person signs up, they will get all the chapters in the order in which they were released. Hijacking Justice is a great easy read for the summer. Readers can also make a donation to the Cobb County Public Safety Foundation that directly benefits and supports our first responders on the frontlines.

“I am very excited and proud to release Hijacking Justice and continue the story of Johnny Till” said author Lance J. LoRusso. “For fans of Hunting of Men, they will love the continuing saga of Johnny and for new readers it will be a captivating read and introduction to the world of the Blue Mystery series. But more importantly, it shows what our brave men and women in blue confront in today’s polarized world.”

In Hunting of Men the first book featuring Johnny Till, LoRusso draws upon his diverse law enforcement background that saw him work the street, serve as a trainer, hostage negotiator, and an investigator.  The book launches the career of central character, Johnny Till who will be the key character in all the Blue Mystery books. The book’s title, Hunting of Men, is drawn from Ernest Hemingway’s quote, “There is no hunting like the hunting of man, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never care for anything else thereafter.” The mystery in Hunting of Men focuses upon a cold case murder.

Johnny Till is a force to be reckoned with as a new homicide detective for the Lawler County Police Department. As tradition demands, on his first day on the job, Till pulls a cold case file to investigate. The file in question is one that has haunted the department and community for years: the cold-blooded murder of Officer Michael Dunlap, gunned down in the black of night some twenty years earlier.

Now, in order to solve the murder and heal the victims left behind, Till must reopen old wounds and retrace the final days of Dunlap’s life. The journey will lead him down a rabbit hole to a darker, more sinister conspiracy, one that threatens to steal the lives of children around the world. In order to close this cold case, Till must not only come into his new role as a homicide detective, but face his own fears to truly become a hunter of men.

LoRusso is a lawyer and former police officer who serves as the general counsel to the Georgia Fraternal Order of Police and Cobb County’s Lodge 13 of FOP. He also the founder of the Cobb Public Safety Foundation, which advocates on behalf of the county’s law enforcement and first responder personnel and their families.

CenterStage North live performances to return in Feb. 2022

CenterStage North, the community theatre that stages live performances at The Art Place-Mountain View, announced Wednesday it will not be holding its 2021 season due to ongoing local restrictions related to COVID-19.CenterStage North return Feb. 2022

In a social media posting, the theatre’s board said that “latter-year scheduling conflicts will make a return for CenterStage North impossible in 2021. This is sad news for all of us. We miss you, our loyal patrons; we miss the stage; we miss the camaraderie; and we miss our art.”

The message indicated that “we have a season fully selected and ready to begin in February 2022. We’ve got an exciting season lined up that kicks off with a comedy-drama, followed by a Southern comedy in May, a head-spinning (and door-slamming!) farce in August, an audience-interactive musical in October (we would give you a Clue, but ….), and finally a heartwarming holiday show will close out our season in December 2022.”

CenterStage North performances haven’t taken place since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020.

The board’s message also said that anyone who’s purchased tickets or a subscription for performances in 2020 and 2021 will have their payments applied to the 2022 season. Those seeking refunds should e-mail boxoffice@centerstagenorth.net.

Atlanta Jewish Film Festival to take place in hybrid format for 2021

Submitted information:Atlanta Jewish Film Festival

The Atlanta Jewish Film Festival is thrilled to announce its return in 2021, a hybrid experience spanning 12 days, February 17-28.

In response to the ongoing pandemic, we’ve reimagined the annual festival to combine at-home virtual screenings with select drive-in movies, expanded conversations with filmmakers and special guests, as well as other unique components.

Our 21st edition will look and feel very different, prioritizing the safety, comfort and convenience of you, our loyal audience, above all else. What won’t change: world-class film, stimulating conversation and a celebration of diversity.

The 2021 AJFF film lineup will include over 30 narrative and documentary features plus short film offerings, representing the same breadth of genres and subjects that has become a hallmark of Atlanta’s largest film festival. Powered by CineSend, our Virtual Cinema will allow audiences to access the very best in international cinema from a smart TV, home theater, computer, tablet or other mobile device.

In addition, thanks to an exclusive partnership with Mercedes-Benz Stadium, AJFF will also offer a limited number of drive-in screenings in the 11-acre The Home Depot Backyard greenspace, a spectacular backdrop for a physically distanced but shared moviegoing experience.

Always core to the festival’s mission of fostering dialogue, AJFF will continue its commitment to community conversation with enhanced guest programming, including speaker introductions and extensive Q&A panels that further explore the themes and topics presented on screen.

As stated by Executive Director Kenny Blank, “Cinematic stories feed the soul at a time when we need the help of film artists to make sense of our world, to be inspired, and to reignite our shared sense of humanity. Our festival staff and volunteers have gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure the core tenets of the festival – community, representation, storytelling and experience – are preserved in our 2021 hybrid edition. It’s gratifying to see that, despite the pandemic, the pipeline of new films on Jewish themes is as strong as ever. We look forward to being ‘together through film’ in February, our motto for these COVID times.”

Additional details on films, virtual screenings, programming, and drive-in dates to come soon.
