Georgia Symphony Orchestra to return for 2021-22 season

Georgia Symphony Orchestra
Music Director and Conductor Timothy Verville leads the Georgia Symphony Orchestra’s return to live performances.

Submitted information and photo:

The Georgia Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to announce its 71st concert season with a return to the stage beginning late September 2021.

The GSO’s Classics series, led by Music Director and Conductor Timothy Verville, features three artistically captivating and musically challenging classical performances at either the Marietta Performing Arts Center or the Bailey Center for the Performing Arts at Kennesaw State University. In an effort to continue its focus on diversity and inclusivity in classical music, the series features the works of two American women composers and two women soloists.

On Sept. 25, 2021, the orchestra will kick off the season with Mahler, smahler, a reduced orchestration of Gustav Mahler’s Fourth Symphony. This work often is referred to as Mahler’s most “chamber-like,” due to the intricacies and interplay between instrumental sections. Soprano and Marietta native Maria Valdes, who has received acclaim on the stage from San Francisco to Chicago and New York, is the featured soloist.

The GSO’s performance of Beethoven at the Beach, scheduled for Feb 26, 2022, features Amy Beach’s Symphony No. 2, the first symphony written and published by an American woman composer, and Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major. The award-winning violinist, Minami Yoshida, joins the GSO for her American debut. Yoshida was a major prize winner at the Montreal and Sibelius competitions and has performed with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and others.

The Classics series concludes on May 21, 2022, with a concert entitled The Firebird and Music of Remembrance. The performance includes American composer Jennifer Higdon’s Blue Cathedral, one of her most performed works, and Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite (1919), which is a collection of music from the ballet of the same name. This concert also will feature the GSO’s phenomenal 90-voice GSO Chorus.

In addition to the Classics series, the GSO’s season also includes its Holiday Pops, Sensory Friendly and GSO Jazz! concerts.

Two shows of the GSO’s beloved Holiday Pops concert will be held at the Marietta Performing Arts Center on Dec. 4, 2021. In addition to a traditional sing-along and great holiday favorites, the concert also will feature the winner of its Virtual to Center Stage competition, opera vocalist Lainie Ewers.  And a special guest each year is a man in a distinctive red suit— a favorite for all ages whom you are sure to recognize.

GSO Jazz!, led by Music Director Sam Skelton, once again welcomes fans of this uniquely American music genre to the historic Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre on Feb. 12 and April 2, 2022, to enjoy jazz small ensemble and classic Big Band repertoire.

And once again, the GSO will hold its annual Sensory Friendly performance on March 12, 2022, at the Marietta Performing Arts Center. Funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and designed specifically for individuals with sensory sensitivities and their families, the concert features a range of enjoyable musical selections. Audience members are free to be themselves; change seats, move about the auditorium, sing, vocalize, even yell out “BRAVO!” after their newly discovered classical favorites.

To ensure the health and safety of its patrons, musicians and staff, the GSO will follow all recommended CDC COVID-19 protocols at its partner venues.

GSO season subscription renewals will begin on July 21, 2021, followed by general admission season subscriptions Aug. 1 and individual concert ticket sales on Aug. 16.

For more information on season subscription packages or individual concert tickets, visit georgiasymphony.org/all-events.

East Cobb author’s latest detective mystery novel publishes

Submitted information:Lance Lo Russo

“Hijacking Justice,” the latest in Lance J. LoRusso’s Blue Mystery series featuring Detective Johnny Till is being released on Friday, June 3, 2021, to subscribers of the Lance LoRusso Books Newsletter. Each week, a new chapter of this police thriller will be released. With a plot similar to today’s headlines, LoRusso draws upon his extensive experience representing over 100 law enforcement officers involved in shootings, in this serial novel portraying a fictionalized world where the fair treatment of our front-line heroes is often sacrificed to feed power hungry politicians and a criminal machine. In this eight-episode story, Detective Johnny Till finds himself thrown in jail and charged with triple murder after being ambushed while visiting Ingram County on the Georgia Coast to help put away a serial rapist. Fans and readers of police mysteries can go to lancelorussobooks.com to sign up for the LoRusso Books Newsletter and read the thrilling chapters of Hijacking Justice as they are released weekly. Regardless of when a person signs up, they will get all the chapters in the order in which they were released. Hijacking Justice is a great easy read for the summer. Readers can also make a donation to the Cobb County Public Safety Foundation that directly benefits and supports our first responders on the frontlines.

“I am very excited and proud to release Hijacking Justice and continue the story of Johnny Till” said author Lance J. LoRusso. “For fans of Hunting of Men, they will love the continuing saga of Johnny and for new readers it will be a captivating read and introduction to the world of the Blue Mystery series. But more importantly, it shows what our brave men and women in blue confront in today’s polarized world.”

In Hunting of Men the first book featuring Johnny Till, LoRusso draws upon his diverse law enforcement background that saw him work the street, serve as a trainer, hostage negotiator, and an investigator.  The book launches the career of central character, Johnny Till who will be the key character in all the Blue Mystery books. The book’s title, Hunting of Men, is drawn from Ernest Hemingway’s quote, “There is no hunting like the hunting of man, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never care for anything else thereafter.” The mystery in Hunting of Men focuses upon a cold case murder.

Johnny Till is a force to be reckoned with as a new homicide detective for the Lawler County Police Department. As tradition demands, on his first day on the job, Till pulls a cold case file to investigate. The file in question is one that has haunted the department and community for years: the cold-blooded murder of Officer Michael Dunlap, gunned down in the black of night some twenty years earlier.

Now, in order to solve the murder and heal the victims left behind, Till must reopen old wounds and retrace the final days of Dunlap’s life. The journey will lead him down a rabbit hole to a darker, more sinister conspiracy, one that threatens to steal the lives of children around the world. In order to close this cold case, Till must not only come into his new role as a homicide detective, but face his own fears to truly become a hunter of men.

LoRusso is a lawyer and former police officer who serves as the general counsel to the Georgia Fraternal Order of Police and Cobb County’s Lodge 13 of FOP. He also the founder of the Cobb Public Safety Foundation, which advocates on behalf of the county’s law enforcement and first responder personnel and their families.

CenterStage North live performances to return in Feb. 2022

CenterStage North, the community theatre that stages live performances at The Art Place-Mountain View, announced Wednesday it will not be holding its 2021 season due to ongoing local restrictions related to COVID-19.CenterStage North return Feb. 2022

In a social media posting, the theatre’s board said that “latter-year scheduling conflicts will make a return for CenterStage North impossible in 2021. This is sad news for all of us. We miss you, our loyal patrons; we miss the stage; we miss the camaraderie; and we miss our art.”

The message indicated that “we have a season fully selected and ready to begin in February 2022. We’ve got an exciting season lined up that kicks off with a comedy-drama, followed by a Southern comedy in May, a head-spinning (and door-slamming!) farce in August, an audience-interactive musical in October (we would give you a Clue, but ….), and finally a heartwarming holiday show will close out our season in December 2022.”

CenterStage North performances haven’t taken place since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020.

The board’s message also said that anyone who’s purchased tickets or a subscription for performances in 2020 and 2021 will have their payments applied to the 2022 season. Those seeking refunds should e-mail boxoffice@centerstagenorth.net.

Atlanta Jewish Film Festival to take place in hybrid format for 2021

Submitted information:Atlanta Jewish Film Festival

The Atlanta Jewish Film Festival is thrilled to announce its return in 2021, a hybrid experience spanning 12 days, February 17-28.

In response to the ongoing pandemic, we’ve reimagined the annual festival to combine at-home virtual screenings with select drive-in movies, expanded conversations with filmmakers and special guests, as well as other unique components.

Our 21st edition will look and feel very different, prioritizing the safety, comfort and convenience of you, our loyal audience, above all else. What won’t change: world-class film, stimulating conversation and a celebration of diversity.

The 2021 AJFF film lineup will include over 30 narrative and documentary features plus short film offerings, representing the same breadth of genres and subjects that has become a hallmark of Atlanta’s largest film festival. Powered by CineSend, our Virtual Cinema will allow audiences to access the very best in international cinema from a smart TV, home theater, computer, tablet or other mobile device.

In addition, thanks to an exclusive partnership with Mercedes-Benz Stadium, AJFF will also offer a limited number of drive-in screenings in the 11-acre The Home Depot Backyard greenspace, a spectacular backdrop for a physically distanced but shared moviegoing experience.

Always core to the festival’s mission of fostering dialogue, AJFF will continue its commitment to community conversation with enhanced guest programming, including speaker introductions and extensive Q&A panels that further explore the themes and topics presented on screen.

As stated by Executive Director Kenny Blank, “Cinematic stories feed the soul at a time when we need the help of film artists to make sense of our world, to be inspired, and to reignite our shared sense of humanity. Our festival staff and volunteers have gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure the core tenets of the festival – community, representation, storytelling and experience – are preserved in our 2021 hybrid edition. It’s gratifying to see that, despite the pandemic, the pipeline of new films on Jewish themes is as strong as ever. We look forward to being ‘together through film’ in February, our motto for these COVID times.”

Additional details on films, virtual screenings, programming, and drive-in dates to come soon.

Lassiter student chosen for AP College Board digital art exhibit

Abigail Cutler, Lassiter student AP digital art exhibit

Reader Lisa Cutler passed along a really cool honor for her daughter Abigail, a senior at Lassiter High School.

She’s been selected as one of 51 students worldwide for the AP College Board Art digital art exhibit.

Lisa says 63,000 students submitted their work for the contest, and Abigail’s work is the only one from a student in Georgia.

Her exhibit is called “Do you see right through me?” and the subject explores anxieties and inner securities when not taking proper medication.

She used acrylic paint, magazine paper, digital images, and a permanent marker. Says Abigail’s Lassiter art teacher, Suzette Spinelli:

“Abigail is a student that can mentally visualize something from real life into a profound work of art. Her experience is not the final art but a trigger for a new idea. This helps her create art that becomes higher-level, incorporating critical thinking skills that she thrives upon.”

The Art Place-Mountain View presents ‘Bard in the Yard’

The Bard in the Yard The Art Place

Live performances at The Art Place-Mountain View have been halted since the COVID-19 closings in March, but this weekend there will be an outdoor production of a Shakespeare classic, with a modern twist for the times.

A retelling of “The Comedy of Errors” presented by the Mountain View Arts Alliance—the non-profit that helps sustains The Art Place—as “Bard in the Yard.”

Here’s the contemporary backdrop for the story:

The Syracuse Flu Pandemic has spread throughout the Mediterranean and all citizens are wearing face covering and distancing in 1920s Ephesus.

The Black and White movie scene is laced with laughter and fun in this family friendly production of The Comedy of Errors.

Two sets of twins, two Antipholuses and two Dromios are both wandering the city unknown to the other! The confusion is delightful!

OH—and there are PIES !

The productions are Friday-Saturday from 7:30-9:30 p.m. and Sunday 3-5. The cost is $10 for a group. Essentially, it’s a “pod” of up to four people who will be seated in a socially distanced manner on the lawn.

All staff and actors will be wearing masks, and guests will be required to wear them as well, except when seated at their pod.

There won’t be an intermission and concessions won’t be sold, but you can bring your own food and drink (alcohol prohibited).

More information and ticket ordering can be found here. The Art Place is at 3330 Sandy Plains Road.

In May, CenterStage North Theatre, which has staged live performances at The Art Place for years, cancelled its entire 2020 season, and said it would transfer any purchased tickets to the 2021 season:

“These are challenging and difficult times for many reasons, but we have confidence in the power of art and the resilience of the human spirit. We will keep a light on for our beloved theater and its celebration of our shared experiences. We eagerly await the moment when we can all be together again.”

Picture Show at Merchant’s Exchange to reopen on Aug. 21

The Picture Show at Merchant’s Exchange (4400 Roswell Road), which had a grand-reopening in March, a week before the COVID-19 crisis began, announced this week that it’s going to start screening movies once again on Aug. 21.Picture Show Merchant's Exchange

Those films and a schedule are forthcoming, but the decision to reopen is part of a phased approach by the cinema’s owner, Picture Show Entertainment, which operates 12 theaters across the country.

Its theaters in Grand Junction, Colo., reopened in June, and the East Cobb location is one of six following suit next Friday.

Capacity will be limited to at most 50 percent. Moviegoers will be required to wear masks in general areas but can take them off when seated for their films.

Cash won’t be accepted at the theater, there will be limited restroom capacity and patrons will be asked not to congregate in the lobby.

More reopening guidelines and information can be found here.

The Picture Show at Merchant’s Exchange had undergone a major $1 million renovation and reopened its doors a week before being forced to close due to COVID-19.

In recent weeks, GTC Merchants Walk Cinema (1301 Johnson Ferry Road) has screened films for private parties of up to 20 people making reservations in what it calls By Appointment Only. Many of those sessions, which are shown on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only, are sold out well in advance.

The Movie Tavern (4651 Woodstock Road) reopened in mid-June, screening a variety of classic movies. Earlier this month management announced that “although classic films are enjoyable on the big screen, nothing compares to seeing a new movie at the theatre opening weekend. So, we’ve decided to put a pause on past movies and await the return of the blockbuster in a few weeks and have an even bigger reopening.”

August classes at The Art Place moved to Sewell Mill Library

The Art Place-Mountain View is getting a new roof, so classes during the month of August have been moved to the Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center (2051 Lower Roswell Road). The Art Place August classes

Some of those classes start Monday, and here’s a full list of offerings for The Art Place and Sewell Mill, for kids as well as grown-ups, with information and registration links.

A new course is Handbuilding at Home, for youths and adults (see flyer at right; there’s a “supersize” course that costs $81), and it takes place between Aug. 10-24.

And here’s your COVID safety message to observe, and the limitations on classes that will be very different from usual as a result:

This summer our in-person classes will be operating with a 5-student maximum, all classes will enforce social distancing, and it is recommended students wear masks in the classroom.

Cobb PARKS has also instituted a screening process to enter the building. When you arrive for class your temperature will be checked, and you will be given a wristband. Parents will not be able to wait in lobby for students to finish classes – as lobbies are closed to the public.

We also have several virtual options for students this session. Please note that all classes are taught by PARKS employees, and each center will have more limited offerings than a typical semester. We hope you use this opportunity to explore classes and workshops in different art centers across the county. If you are interested in a class that is not listed, please email your ideas to info@artplacemarietta.org.

East Cobb author’s book included in ‘Authors Adopt Heroes’ program

Submitted information:Lance Lo Russo

Author Lance J. LoRusso announces that Hunting of Men, the first book in his Blue Mystery book series featuring detective Johnny Till has been included in the Authors Adopt Heroes program established by author Penny Reid. In this program authors of various genres are connected with medical professionals who are interested in the genre the author writes in and the author sends the medical professionals copies of their book. LoRusso was selected as an author for the mystery genre and donated copies of Hunting of Men to medical professionals who expressed interest in mystery books. The program was designed to honor the medical professionals in the frontline battling the coronavirus.

“The men and women who are treating coronavirus are true heroes and heroines putting their lives in the line daily,” said Lance J. LoRusso. “I salute them. I hope that Hunting of Men brings some enjoyment and escape from what they are dealing with when they receive the copies, I contributed.

“I am honored to have been included in Authors Adopt Heroes Program,” continued LoRusso. “I believe it is an excellent way for authors to support the heroes and heroines in this pandemic war.”Hunting of Men cover

In Hunting of Men, LoRusso draws upon his diverse law enforcement background that saw him work the street, serve as a trainer, hostage negotiator, and an investigator.

Parallax, written to provide engaging as well as accurate entertainment, is a series of fictional stories based on the harsh realities faced by law enforcement officers in the performance of their duties and stories recounted to LoRusso by officers over the years.  Peacemaking was LoRusso’s first entry into the world of fiction, follows the journey of a police officer, Scotty Painter, in the aftermath of a shooting.

LoRusso is a former police officer who is principal of the LoRusso Law Firm on Powers Ferry Road. He is the legal counsel for the Georgia Fraternal Order of Police and attorney for the Cobb County FOP Lodge 13 as well as a lawyer for law enforcement officers.

He is the founder of the Cobb County Public Safety Foundation, which advocates for better pay and support for county public safety personnel.

More on his books can be found here.
