PHOTOS: Art in the Dark installation show at The Art Place

Art in the Dark

Thanks to Caitlin King, art center coordinator at The Art Place, for the photos from last Friday’s “Art in the Dark” installation show.

She said more than 200 people turned out, taking in various light exhibits, including sculpture, pottery and glowing art, and improv radio show in the dark.

On Thursday, The Art Place will hold an opening reception for its new gallery show, featuring Photographer Appreciation Month and the Cobb Photographic Society and that runs through Oct. 31.

Also on Thursday at The Art Place (3330 Sandy Plains Road) is the opening of CenterStage North‘s production of “Point of Order.” It’s a comedy by playwright Ed Simpson about how a small Pennsylvania town in decline tries to turn around its fortunes by honoring a famous, long-gone citizen with a statue and gala event that reveals the vanities and egos of the locals instead.

Mountain View Arts Alliance to hold Pete Borden memorial event in October

In October the Mountain View Arts Alliance will be honoring the memory of Pete Borden, a longtime East Cobb resident who was actively involved in community theater.Pete Borden, Mountain View Arts Alliance

The memorial event will take place Oct. 10 from 7-9 p.m. at The Art Place (3330 Sandy Plains Road), and will include the unveiling of a memorial stone hand crafted by local artist Julie Mazzoni.

Borden died in March at the age of 81 from lung cancer.

Born in Texas and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Borden was a brick mason by profession and active in Cobb theater organizations, including The Art Place, as a playwright, director and actor. He also was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Ann in East Cobb.

Borden also wrote a regular column for many years in The Marietta Daily Journal and advocated for local arts and theater organizations in that space.

Shortly after his death, the MDJ reprinted one of Borden’s columns from 2012, as he recalled an early 1990s flap on the Cobb Board of Commissioners over arts funding and an anti-gay resolution that cost Cobb County its official 1996 Olympics participation.

In a message on its Facebook page about the memorial event, the MVAA said:

If you would like to perform a scene or song or skit or even a roast tributing Pete, please advise and we will put together a program.

East Cobb Weekend Events: Sewell Mill Library Mini Con, ‘The Tempest,’ Bradley’s Car Show, Marietta Campmeeting closes and more

The Sewell Mill Library Mini Con that’s set for Saturday is one of the new facility’s most ambitious events yet.

Sewell Mill Library Mini Con

It’s from 1-6, and like the world-famous Comic-Con International taking place this weekend in San Diego, is a celebration of comics arts and related popular culture.

There will be a Cosplay contest, panels and workshops on the digital arts, local artists and vendors (including the Giga-Bites Café of East Cobb) and food purchases from Good Food Marietta across the street and more.

The activities also include a Dungeons & Dragons Adventure League all day, tabletop games, 3D printing demos and Captain Underpants games.

The full schedule can be found here with links to much of what’s going on.

James Mitchell of the Sewell Mill Library explained the evolution of Mini Con to East Cobb News:

“Mini Con started as an idea from the Sewell Mill Library & Cultural Center staff to bring together local community partners including local artist, writers, gamers, podcasters, cosplayers, businesses, and filmmakers into one local event.

“We have tried to create an event that has something for everyone: food, live music, workshops, a costume contest, face painting, board gaming, D&D, and much more. We have been very fortunate to have found so many volunteers in the community to help with the project.

“It is really that community that makes this and other events possible. We are all geeks at heart here at Sewell Mill and look forward to sharing that experience with the public.”

All events are free and open to all ages. The Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center is located at 2051 Lower Roswell Road.

On Friday and Saturday, the work of the Bard comes to Sandy Plains Road, but it will be something of a bittersweet event. William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” is being presented at The Art Place (3330 Sandy Plains Road).

The shows, which start at 7:30 each night, will be the last for the Different Drum Theatrics group. The student-focused outfit is “closing up shop with heavy hearts” due to a lack of participants.

Bradley's Car Show
Classic cars will be on display Sunday at Bradley’s Bar & Grill.

Ticket prices are $12 at the door and $13 if you’re using a credit card.

From 3-7 Sunday, Bradley’s Bar & Grill (4961 Lower Roswell Road, French Quarter Shopping Center) is holding its 2nd annual Car Show. This year, the beneficiary is the Orphan Annie Animal Rescue organization. There will be food, live music, classic cars and games and prizes.

The 181st Marietta Campmeeting is winding down this weekend, with 11 a.m. services Friday-Sunday and 7:30 p.m. services on Friday and Saturday. The Marietta Campground is located at 2300 Roswell Road, and overflow parking is available across the street at East Cobb United Methodist Church. The services are free to all.

East Cobb parks and recreational facilities on list of possible closures due to budget deficit

A draft plan that would cut roughly 15 percent of the Cobb Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department budget lists several East Cobb parks and recreational facilities for possible permanent closure. They include the Fullers Park and Recreation Center, the Mountain View Aquatic Center and The Art Place.

Cobb PARKS director Jimmy Gisi has included those facilities, as well as the Mountain View Community Center, on a list of parks, recreational and community centers and other facilities under its purview as options for budget cuts that come to $3.3 million.

UPDATE: Cobb chairman proposes revised budget, keeping parks and libraries open

Cobb County government is facing a fiscal year 2019 budget deficit of at least $30 million, and commissioners will hold a retreat next week before budget town hall meetings take place around the county through early July.

Cobb Commission Chairman Mike Boyce has proposed a 1.1-mill increase in the general fund property tax millage rate to cover the $30 million gap.

Earlier this year Cobb Library director Helen Poyer recommended cuts of nearly $3 million, or around 25 percent of that department’s budget to be reduced, including the closure of East Cobb Library.

Many of the East Cobb items on the parks and recreation list have undergone extensive renovations and maintenance in recent years with money from SPLOST and not property tax revenues.

There are facilities in each of the four Cobb Board of Commissioners districts that are on the draft list. By far, the deepest cuts would come in District 3 in Northeast Cobb, represented by JoAnn Birrell.

A total of $1.1 million in cost-savings has been identified there: The Art Place, Mountain View Aquatic Center and Mountain View Community Center.
Mountain View Aquatic Center

The aquatic center budget is more than $600,000 a year, the most expensive of the items on the draft list. It’s heavily used by high school and club youth swimming teams, as well the general public. The facility was renovated with $1.4 million in 2011 SPLOST funding.

The Art Place, which offers art classes, has art gallery events and sales and an outdoor amphitheater. It’s also the home for numerous community concerts and theater presentations, including those of the Mountain View Arts Alliance and CenterStage North, has a budget of more than $500,000 a year.

Both the aquatic center and The Art Place are part of a consortium of county government services on Sandy Plains Road that includes the East Cobb Senior Center and the Mountain View Regional Library.

The Mountain View Community Center, with a budget of around $6,000 a year, also is in that complex, located next to the former Mountain View Elementary School. The county spent nearly $160,000 last year to make renovations on the small building, which was closed for several months.

The Fullers Park and Recreational Center on Robinson Road cost a combined $315,000 a year to operate, and serve as the home for the East Side Baseball Association and other youth and recreational entities. In recent years the rec center was renovated with nearly $1.2 million in SPLOST funds.

The Atlanta Braves also paid for the renovation of a baseball field at Fullers Park in 2015 as part of its “Chipper Jones Field” community outreach program.

Those are the only two facilities in Commisioner Bob Ott’s District 2 that are on the draft list.

Also included in the draft plan for possible elimination is Keep Cobb Beautiful, with an annual budget of more than $200,000, and which has a strong advocate in Birrell.

The list of the possible parks closures comes as new East Cobb parks projects are underway, or will be soon.

Construction on Mabry Park (formerly in District 3, now in District 2) began earlier this year, at a cost of nearly $3 million in SPLOST funding. Commissioners recently spent $1.7 million to purchase 18 acres on Ebenezer Road for a park in District 3.

That amount is included in the current fiscal year 2018 budget commissioners voted to fully fund the 2008 Cobb Parks Bond referendum.Fullers Rec Center

Those are passive parks, with minimal cost and staffing compared to what’s been included on the draft plan. Other possible closures include the Lost Mountain Park and Tennis Center and the Ward Recreational Center in West Cobb, and the South Cobb Aquatic Center and South Cobb Recreation Center.

Mabry Park’s annual operating budget is expected to be $104,000, paid via property tax revenues. Funding details for the development of the Ebenezer Road park have not been determined. The county is holding a public preview for that park on June 23.

The county is also spending $284,000 in property tax revenues in both the library and parks budgets for the current fiscal year to operate the Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center, which opened in December 2017. It replaced the East Marietta Library and cost $10 million in SPLOST funding to construct.

The Art Place issues call for auditions for ‘Murder at Cafe Noir’

The Art Place, Murder at Cafe Noir

If you’re feeling the itch to reprise some of the best lines, scenes and style of Humphrey Bogart films, The Art Place is seeking a few good local actors for its forthcoming presentation of the play “Murder at Cafe Noir,” inspired by the David Landau book.

The auditions are this coming Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at The Art Place (3330 Sandy Plains Road), with callbacks on Wednesday.

Landau’s work is a comic tribute to Bogart’s 1940s detectives roles. After the owner of the Cafe Noir is murdered, a private investigator is called in, and you probably have a good idea about the rest of the story.

There’s more on The Art Place Facebook page about the characters, but there’s a good variety of roles to audition for, including the protagonist PI Rick Archer.

They include Madam Tourreau, the cafe manager, a black market dealer-turned-bouncer, a fortune teller, a gun runner and a disgraced lawyer.

If you’re chosen for the callbacks, they’ll also be at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, with the cast read-through on Feb. 11 and rehearsals starting Feb. 14.

Performances are March 23-24.

For more information, please email: meryl.manfre@cobbcounty.org.
